Facts!

Never work for free, your time is precious. Price yourself low if you want to, $15 an hour or something, but don't work for free. Doing this screams desperation to the client, which is often a big turn off. You're worth more than free.

Hi @rww4624 I personally host my website on Square space...my bookkeeping and accounting business name is Fortified Accounting. However, when I started, I had a one page website I used as a sort of bill board to send folks to for the main general information. I get all of my domains from Go Daddy. Hi @kimmiel6825 I can totally understand the uncertainty that comes with not finding a paying client right away. I will encourage you to find 2-3 different ways you work to generate leads and make it your priority to build that muscle memory and feel confident while gaining the skill of direct outreach until you get that first client. Everything feels harder at first, but it gets easier the more you do it. If you choose a method to find clients and you don't like it, try another way until you find the one you can grow and master.

Hi @calicowest, congratulations on your First Client, that's amazing!. I will paste the 'draft' wording in a follow up comment below. - You are the 'consultant/contractor' you set the payment terms [you can make it so that it is pay the invoice upon receipt: due immediately with a few days of grace period] - Traditionally, we send a monthly invoice for services rendered the previous month because we are not on payroll getting paid every two weeks or on the 15th and the last day of the month. Also, most clients don't like to cut two checks for paying a bill/invoice for a contractor. Does this mean you'll be sending them two invoices? - The only time I've built it into our contract to invoice a client twice a month and get paid twice a month is when we knew the invoice would be so high that it would help the client to get an invoice for $5,000 twice a month and have the opportunity to pay each at seperate times which helped with his cashflow. question for you: - how much will you be invoicing them hat you need to have them pay twice a month? - is this to help you with your cashflow or your client? You can set the expectation in your scope of service/agreement so they know they will get two invoices per month, and what your payment terms are (how soon to get paid). There may be pushback because you as the bookkeeper will also be helping the client to pay bills (your bills have now gone from one a moth to two a month).

@calicowest here is a sample draft of wording to communicate billing: if sent via email Subject: Improved Invoicing for Your Convenience Dear [Client's Name], I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to discuss our billing process that could make managing your finances even easier. We invoice bi-monthly with invoices sent on the 15th and the last day of each month. Here's why it's beneficial: - Easier Budgeting: Smaller, more frequent invoices make it simpler to budget and track expenses. - Improved Cashflow: You'll have a clearer view of expenses, helping with cash flow management. - Convenience: Invoices will still be "due upon receipt," giving you flexibility in payment. This change will enhance transparency and help you stay in control of your finances. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out. @@TheBookkeepingShop Thank you. It new to me that bookkeeping is now outsourced, I left accounting back in 1997, and I have been doing other financial services business. I embarked on a long time friend sho is a contractors and he needed help with preparing for taxes. I jumped in and was able to help him with any prior years of accounting transactions.

I think I want to specialize in contractors and help with bookkeeping for those with inventory counts.

I will reply to your questions shortly, when I’m back in my office in a few days. It’s a great question and I think others would have the same question so I may actually do a video on it.

I live in California as well. Great questions about charging. In the video I mention an Intake Questionnaire which is typically something you would send your prospect in order to determine how big of a project it is. How many months, how many bank accounts, etc. and then you as the professional, need to assess how much time you may need in order to complete the project in a specific amount of time. You can then take that time, add some buffer for unexpected things that come up (because they always come up) and multiply those hours by a rate that would make you a profit and be worth your while to then give a fixed rate for the project. You can also add a clause that scopes out the project and stipulates if the volume or project is larger than originally scoped out, you may need to discuss and adjust or charge an additional rate. Hi James, the example I give is in the video. Creating an offer where you are solving a problem that a small business owner has especially in the fourth quarter of the year when they have all of a sudden realized they are way behind in keeping up with their books is a type of irresistible offer. You as a Bookkeeper, a Creating and Offer that is specific to the small business owner to solve the problem in a timely manner.

You can name to sell for a couple of different things whether it’s A) Year-End Bookkeeping B) Fourth-quarter catch up Bookkeeping C) Year End Catch Up your bookkeeping D) The All caught up bookkeeping offer

@nzabeen, where are you located? You may want to try to work for a remote bookkeeping firm that allows you to work from anywhere while getting experience...look for bigger firms that would have a training and allow new bookkeepers to join their team. It may require you to reach out to them and inquire about a position if you still want to work for a firm where you can get experience from for a while to gain experience.

@@TheBookkeepingShop I get inspiration from you. I live in Hamilton city, Ontario province,Canada. This area is dead for accounting I believe. That's why I am facing same consequence again n again. Would you be able to tell me a few accounting firms that provide training and big enough to accomodate large number of employees? also remote working facility? To gain more experience or skill, I am enrolled in a bookkeeping certification course now 8 months long. So at least I have the skill. In Past, I had an accounting diploma that only covered generalised accounting knowledge but no hands on accounting skill and software skills, no skill for filing taxes and othet items.

@@TheBookkeepingShop most of thoese bookkeeping jobs that I had bad experience was from either one person owner or family owned small bookkeeping businesses. Not big accounting firms. I barely know any of those firms.

Hi @nzabeen, finding clients is a challenge many new bookkeepers or bookkeeping business owners face. I do believe that your first bookkeeping client is usually in your network (contacts). Have you put a communication together to let people in your circle know of what you're doing, what you offer, the type of client you're looking for? Start with focusing on getting warm leads (your network) and work on communicating with them to focus on getting one client in the next 30 days. Have you grabbed my resource (free) 'Nurture Your Network'? it gives you a guideline and email scripts you can customize to reach out.

@@TheBookkeepingShop i will do that. Thanks a lot! The reason I decided to become self employee is the dirty politics of accounting employers now a days. Iam in Canada, Ontario province, Hamilton city. They hire me, watch me a few days and realise I am new, still not super fast or need guidance/training and thenthey fire me. It has happened 4 times with me so far. These employers do not want to teach the on spot job training now a days because after I learn theskill, definitely I might walk away an. become self employed and be a competetor for them right? It has also happenes with some new bookkeepers in our community that I knowso far. And I am also stubborn. i want to be succesful here in this field. and i took vow i will become self employed, become a competitor for these nasty business people. more new self employed bookkeepers should emerge to solve this ugly situation. to be more knowledgeable, right now i m back to college to do an 8 month bookkeeping certification to learn the quickbooks in detail. in past, i only had an accounting dioloma, that didn't cover the hands on experience in bookkeeping. soecialy the different types of filings.

I understand the hesitation is because you feel you're not ready. I'll encourage you to focus on getting one client, that first client is going to be the one with that you can practice your overall method of communication, delivery of service, actually performing the task of bookkeeping, and even the act of onboarding. What do you feel is the biggest area of worry for you?

@@TheBookkeepingShop I'm really afraid of taking on the client and then not knowing what to do after that. Then I'd be in a position where they were trusting me with something as huge as their business and finances and I wouldn't know what to do after taking them on and I would let them down, make them mad maybe and maybe they would post lots of bad things about my company name and I'd ruin my opportunity to have this business that means so much to me. I really, really care about people and LOVE to find ways to help them. I don't want to let anyone down or make a mistake.
