Wheels in the Sky

Добавлен 22 июл 2016
Hi, I’m Chris Wheeler ( Wheels ). Former military and retired airline guy. In search of the perfect retirement. Flying with friends, we’re reliving our past in F1 Rockets, Harmon Rockets and Rv’s. Flying formation, low levels and just having fun exploring the scenic countryside of Utah and Idaho. With so many amazing backcountry airstrips in Utah and Idaho, I recently picked up a 185. So excited, looking forward to the best summer ever! I’ll see you soon, airplane camping in the backcountry! Oops, and now I’ve got a Husky to!!! I’ll be swapping between the 185 and the Husky all summer comparing the two. I hope you’ll come along!

definitely, former F-16 pilots, flying that low to the terrain takes practice. I can't believe the RV4 airframe and how 100 percent sound everything appears during these flight maneuvers. Stunning really. Did Vans ever replace the RV4 kit with an upgraded model or does each and every model have its unique characteristics?
@dabneyoffermein595. Hi, glad you enjoyed the video. Vans still offers the RV4 kit for sale on their website. Of course they also offer several other kits. Since the kits are put together by the owners, each one is going to be somewhat unique. Burnie’s has a 180 hp engine, so it has great performance. We flew a six ship formation yesterday, Burnie was in his RV14, although he likes that plane, he made several comments about how much he likes the way his RV4 handles, especially in formation.
@@WheelsInTheSky Great info, THANKS
Beautiful !!!
@gary3283. Hi Gary, nothing like a flight thru the desert! Flying in Southern Utah is why I picked up a high wing, so I could land at some of those cool airstrips.
Just found this...........wow. Nicely done. The mighty Skywagon is the right plane for that adventure.
@billybud9557. Thanks. Glad you found it. Yeah, the 185 is pretty versatile. I picked up a Husky since that video. But there’s some things only the 185 can do.
@@WheelsInTheSky The 200 hp Aviat should be great Super Cub substitute. Never flew a Husky, but want to.
Nice job guys! Added to my short list of next buy airplanes!
@hpievyak. Thanks . Glad to hear you’ve got an airplane list !! I’ve got one to.
I love the avionics and the safety measures if the pilot has a medical event. Of course, the plane's overall design is sleek and futuristic.
@justa.american8303. Yeah, pretty cool. Porto has a 916 at Oshkosh right now.
Great video! I met Alberto Porto at Bowman Field in Louisville, Kentucky today. He was on his way to Oshkosh, a very brilliant and humble man.
@flyguyblue1. That’s great! Yeah, he’s a good fellow. I just got the engine reinstalled in my Rocket yesterday. Planning on heading to OSH Tuesday. Thanks for checking in.
@@WheelsInTheSky wow, that's great! I hope to attend some day.
+Well done Gentlemen. Thanks for the ride and Tour, Beauty Country!
@smithbarney8164. Thanks you. That was a fun day. Looking forward to the rest of the summer- just got my Rocket flying again after being down for engine repair.
What is the arrival airport plse? (for my FSX?)
Pb8837. We landed at KBTF. Then drove over to U42 where Bob keeps his plane.
What is the price on something like this???
@@FineEpicArt777 For the 915SV, based on avionics, $325-$360K
@@WheelsInTheSky Thank you
so true
off roading at its best
@erichetherington9899. Yeah, the best way.
y :)
cowboy up so cool ty :)
@erichetherington8999. It’s an awesome place. Just got back the other day. Spent 4 days at Johnson Creek. High winds the first two days, then nice weather. Hiked Thomas Creek. And Lower Loon. I’ll see if I’ve got enough video to post something.
nice ty :)
@johnwilfley2723. identitygraphx.com/
Can't wait to see the new 916 Equipped Risen at Oshkosh.
@garretwill5839. Yeah, me to. Alberto has already brought it over to the states. Non-stop flight. It’s sitting in a hanger at Appleton, waiting for Oshkosh. I’m hoping after Oshkosh, he’ll bring it out here for a video. I’m putting the engine back in my Rocket right now. Hope to be ready to fly to Oshkosh. See you there.
@@WheelsInTheSky I see you talking about potentially fitting bigger tires on these for rougher takeoffs/landings. Did Bob ever get back to you? What size of tire can you get on them?
@garrettwilt5839 Hi Will, I just talked to Bob. He says he’s got the smaller tires and the new Risen’s have, or can be fitted with bigger tires for grass strips. He was driving and said he’ll text me shortly with the size of those bigger tires. I’ll make a note to check back with you.
@@garrettwilt5839 Bob just texted me yesterday- 13 X 5 X 6 is the biggest tire
Going to fly this one in MSFS. Thanks.
@kevinaltizer. Hope you have fun. I’m heading back up on the 26th.
Thank you Wheels. Your videos are a gem. The scenery, airplanes and the perfect calm narrative takes us along a meditative journey. You nailed the composition. Please keep them coming. ❤
@vincentbrok1. Thanks Vince. I’ll get to work on another video. Going up to Idaho shortly. Hope to take lots of video.
Thanks for the video lovely country you're flying over. Thanks also for not including music on takeoff as I love to hear the sound of the aeroplane. All the best from down under Australia 😁🙃
@PS-Strays_M8. You’re very welcome. Thanks for the kind words. Engine noise is music to my ears also.
Love the plane, Bob, would you share where you got your graphics and what they are
@johnwilfley2723 Sure, I hope to see Bob tomorrow. If not for sure on Tuesday, when I’ll be doing some videoing of his plane. I’ll get back to you. This is Chris- I did the video of Bob’s plane.
Thanks Chris, most appreciated ! Blue Skys
@johnwilfley2723. I think Bob forgot. I’ll text him again
@Johnwilfley2723. identitygraphx.com/
Sure do love that plane Bob, would you be so kind as to share what graphic material you used on your plane where that would be available?
Johnwilfley2723. Hi John. I think I’ll see Bob tomorrow and I’ll ask him. I’ll let you know.
I miss flying SOOOO much. But when you lose you're medical due to cardio problems there's no going back.
@bobjoatmon1993. Yeah, sorry to hear that. I switched to Basic Med 2 years ago. As soon as I retired from the airlines, my AME started getting finicky. Like, I didn’t really need a medical anymore, since I wasn’t flying for a living. I know my day will come soon enough, so for now I get as much enjoyment as I can.
@@WheelsInTheSky unfortunately, aFib treated with a Cardioversion (they shock your heart stopped then shock it back beating) is a disqualifing condition for Basic Med, I reported it and had the FAA pull my license. Still, I have my A&P so I still get some amount of aviation fix, it's not cold turkey.
He sounds like Bob Ross but with an airplane😂😂. Cool shot!!
@infidel14825. Lol. I keep hearing that. So I looked up Bob Ross- Now I want to try painting. Just sitting here planning another trip up to Johnson Creek.
Really like describing runway approaches. Would love fly Idaho.
@ryaninman6307 Glad you liked it. It’s an amazing place. I’m going to be heading back up there soon. Probably going to make a video going into Lower Loon.
Thanks a lot
@JavaT6437. You bet! Hope it gave you some ideas.
WHAT A BLAST !!!
@user-ny2bxez1c. Hi, glad you enjoyed it. That was one of my first videos. Me and Joe had just gotten our planes and we’re having so much fun, I thought I’d try making a video. Joe sold his 3 and then recently bought it back. There’s also another 3 coming to our airport soon. I’m excited to do a dedicated video on just the RV3. With my new camera setup, I think I can get some great video of the two flying formation. Thanks for checking in.
As always high Q, Wheels in the Sky. ✌️
@mpschaefer1. Hey MP. Thanks. I think I get my engine back next week. Can’t wait to get back in the Rocket!!
Beautiful sights... greetings from Poland 🇵🇱
@janwojnowski3748. Thank you. Good to hear from our friends in Poland! I’ll be heading back up to Idaho soon. I’ve been studying the map at Lower Loon airstrip. There’s some nice hikes and a hot spring there. Same kind of approach- over the river through a canyon to a 1200’ strip.
I love your content, I grew up in that area. It's cool to see it from a different perspective.
@dundas9222. Amazing. I take it you’re not in the area anymore? Sure is beautiful country. I always enjoy flying around here.
Looks like a fun group. Are you all running 540's?
@dundas9222. Hi. Yes, all have 540’s. Make a big difference when you have a group to fly with. My Rocket is down right now with the engine out, but hopefully will be back in the air in June.
Lost creek reservoir? Is the private land Deseret land and livestock's?
@dundas9222. I think it’s mostly private land. Just cows, grazing, and some oil wells out in the desert.
I've been a kayaker and don't mind airplanes but hate motor boats.
@michaelsamson. Hey thanks for checking in. That’s good to hear.
Nice video. Beautiful canyon and scenery in Muddy Canyon in Utah in the San Rafael Swell. Neat with the wing camera mount where you can rotate camera. Great photography and editing. Thanks for sharing.
cq7415. Hi CQ. Thanks. It’s amazing that the desert can be so beautiful! I’ve been camping there at Hidden Splendor for the last 3 years. Never gets old.
Great design, a 22:1 glide ratio WOW
@CharlesJoostNewbery. Yes, amazing. They’ve got a hanger here in Utah now, where they assemble the Risen .
Great video. Thanks for sharing.
@cq7415. Thank you, and you’re welcome. Can’t wait to go back up to Idaho, probably next month.
I'm really curious on how you're getting all these camera shots from right outside your airplane?
@heinzpilot. Hi, it wasn’t long ago I was asking the same question. Here’s a video of how I do it: How to Mount Cameras on Airplanes #GoPro #Insta360 ruclips.net/video/AKKkPPcr9T4/видео.html
Beautiful. This is what the Dark Aero could have been if they got an experienced designer to the the layout design and lofting of their craft, which is unfortunately to say, not very good on the eyes; not to knock those boys’ efforts. But that’s the reality of it.
@frikkied2638. I haven’t followed the Dark Aero very closely. Hopefully I’ll find one to check out!!
@@WheelsInTheSky you should check thrift efforts out, just search for their RUclips channel. 3 young brothers working very hard to make their vision of a high performance all carbon kit plane a reality; it’s just unfortunate that, in my opinion, the concept just doesn’t look good.
Headset on 180*. You can swap the mic side to side
@alexgriffith7680. Hey Alex, good eye. Yeah, I tried it backwards a few times. Seemed that the top of the headset sat further back on my head and didn’t touch the canopy. I don’t have much clearance. But now I think my seatpack chute has collapsed enough I can wear it right.
@WheelsInTheSky love the videos, trying to figure out where to mount my new 360 cam. Keep up the good work
@alexgriffith7680. That’s great you got a 360 camera. I just got a new one also. Haven’t tried it yet. My Rocket has the engine out right now. As soon as it stops raining I’ll put it on my other plane and test it out. I’m hoping that new 8k makes a big difference.
👍
@Lorenzo.Fedeli40. Hey thanks for checking in. That was a fun ride that day. The Rocket is down for mx, had to pull engine. Can’t wait to get it back in the air.
I’d love to see the tail mount up close. After geeking on many of your newly discovered formation vids, I like the tail mount the best and want to put that on my RV6. I just ordered the 360°x4
@stoldrag85. Sure, send me an email. (Chwheeler1@gmail.com). My Rocket is down with the engine out. It’s in my hanger up at Morgan. I’ll be up there in a few days and I’ll get you some pics and measurements. My new 360 X4 is arriving today. I have high expectations with the 8k!!
Dang, I see the tail camera has a great view of the tail chase and rejoins. The selfie stick also has great perspective with the acro. I should have done this years ago. I hope I can keep up with editing. Thanks for the inspiration.
@stoldrag85. Yeah those 360 cameras are great for capturing video. You’ll quickly get use to editing.
I am about to mount a 360° x4 and due to my searching YT for mounting options I came across your F1 mounting, which led to this Hidden Splendor gem. I’ve been into there and came thru the canyon too and it is even more spectacular than your video captured, which is saying a lot. I didn’t get video when I went there and sure will in the future. I ordered a mic pole and some other gadgets that will arrive this week. I’ll put that on my CCub before heading to AK next week. Had I found your vids sooner I could have tried your DIY. Pretty clean setup you did. I’ll do something similar for my RV6 wing mount. I wonder though, how are you able to get the great engine/prop sound without much wind distortion? It’s music all by itself!
@stoldrag85. My X2’s weren’t too bad about picking up wind noise, but my X3’s pick it up much more, even when set to wind reduction. I finally just put little pieces of painters tape over the mics. With the tail mount in the prop wash, there’s more wind noise than the wing mount. With my Rocket down for mx, I’ve been using my 185 more. I removed the cargo door and have been using my Canon R6 on a gimbal to get video while my buddy flies. It’s been so much fun, I think I’ll post a video in the next few weeks. PS., my X4 is coming tomorrow, I thought today was Monday??
Great footage. Wonderful country
@Britishandproud123. Thanks. The weather is starting to warm up and I can’t wait to go back. Got a few new airstrips picked out to camp at and hike to hot springs!!
Risen or Pipistrel Sinux Flex.
@apuuvah. Between the two planes, I would go with the Risen since I’m not very interested in gliders. But, there is quite a difference in price. Of course, I personally went with a Rocket, and it was a used one. There’s a lot of choices and getting to be more every day. Have fun deciding.
Any bears?
@DanFrederikson. Hey Dan. Fortunately haven’t seen any bears. But we’re ready just in case!
Just caught your video now have watched a ton of them like them very much. Glad to see you seem to be ok after the big. Went thru it after 32 YRS and it was tough but my faith helped. Keep them coming GOD BLESS YOU AND YOURS
@JM-iy6wm. Hi JM. Glad to meet you. I remember my dad telling me that life wasn’t going to be fair. I know a lot of guys aren’t able to enjoy their retirement. So I count my blessings every day!!
GOALS!
@bricenotcorc632. Yes. Anything that flies is a worthy goal. It will happen!
Slow, Fast, Roomy, Small WOW, it has it all for two people.
@moonmullins8227. Yes. Pretty cool plane. I got some new camera equipment and took the cargo door of my 185. So I’ll be doing some more video from out the cargo door soon.
I live in Idaho and use to fly the back country and learned the back country and landed at all of thies strips . It was wonderful am 81 old now only had a few close calls stay safe
@jerryogstad688. That’s good to hear. You know how amazing that country is. I can’t wait to go back this summer. Thanks for checking in.
You did not spend a fortune on fuel, but you already spent it on buying the plane, cost is a key area where this plane did not come close to addressing. I am sure at least several more manufacturers would be able to design an equivalent or better product if the financial restraints were off .
@tonylam9548. Hey Tony, I agree. I was just having fun flying my Rocket next to Bob’s plane and thought a video would be of interest to some people. I think I’ll do some videos of my other friends planes.
