Agate or Quartz? What Do You Think? | Dremel Rock Polishing
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Месяц назад
Polishing a beautiful piece of quartz? or maybe agate? A friend asked us to polish this. Initially we thought it might be an agate due to its patterns and translucency, but after asking some local rockhounds online, we believe it's quartz. Tell us what you think in the comments! Shaping and Polishing a Rock With a Dremel Tool!
I bought those same sanding discs and they are not working for me
What's going wrong?
I really appreciate that you explain the composition of the rocks you work with.
Thank you! I'm learning as I go and sharing what I learn.
Probably a dumb question, but why do y'all dremel instead of rumble? Nothing wrong with that. I'd like to get into the hobby and would likely dremel a few spots before tumbling. But as it is, I shape my rocks by hand with with sandpaper! 😂
That's actually a good question! One we don't get asked often. There's a few reasons: Dremel polishing is fun! The instant gratification of watching the dust wash away revealing the beauty underneath never gets boring. Dremel polishing is faster. As you know, tumbling takes weeks. Dremel polishing only takes hours. It is also more precise than tumbling. With tumbling, you forfeit control. There are a lot of chips and breaks that could be avoided with the constant oversight that Dremel polishing allows. I have also considered using the Dremel to do some pre-tumble shaping. Some rocks that otherwise would be considered not worthy could get their chance if you smooth those sharp edges and fractures before starting tumbling. Shaping by hand with sandpaper is dedication 😂 I respect that
@@thebroadhouse Thanks for replying! That makes sense! I like both the idea of tumbling AND dremeling. I would love to make small rock sculptures, figurines, or shapes. And sandpapering is actually quite soothing. I smoothed and shaped my aquarium rocks and sanded off rough spots. A dremel would be perfect to make hidey holes for my shrimp. Thank you for the inspiration! 💜

How do you know when to move from one grit to the next?
I know when to change grits based on look and feel. Observe and feel the rock before, during, and after each grit. You'll start to notice subtle differences. I also know when to switch based on the amount of material that's being removed. If the disc ceases to create dust, it's probably time to move on. Keep in mind that the lower grits may still create some dust even when it's time to move on because they're rough enough to continue removing material.
Thank you for the video, its just what i needed to make my mind up and know what to acquire for my Dremel. Im in the process of turning an extra tile saw i have into a flat lap. Using the sanding and polishing technique of this video and my flat lap...... limitless Ohhhh, and high neighbors Im jUst a little south of ya in cowlitz county
Thank you! That sounds awesome! Please tag us if you make a video of that, I'd love to see what you end up with. Hey neighbor 😁
bu video yu arıyordum ilaç gibi oldu bana teşekkürler
that makes me happy. thank you! ☺️
This was a perfect video for me, thank you.
thank you 🙂
Do you keep rock wet when using the sanding discs ?( paper)
Yes! There's a bucket of water offscreen, and I keep the rock as wet as I can.
What's that machine you use to polish it
a Dremel. here's a video that shows how to polish and has links for the tools in the description- ruclips.net/video/sqqop2EaPco/видео.htmlsi=qojTSUPfUiY_jPnv
That turned out great!! ROCK ON!! 😁👍🏻🪨⛏️
thank you! 😁
How do you know when to change your pad up? Whwn if you scratch it?
I change to the next grit based on look, feel, and the amount of material the pad is removing. Once it's not removing material, it's time to move to the next grit. It won't get scratched by moving up in grit, but if a scratch occurs during polishing, I'd drop down to a lower grit to work it out, then continue working up to the highest grit.
How do you know when to switch?
I know when to switch based on look and feel.
How do you make that drip system please
here's the video where I show how it's set up- ruclips.net/user/shortskzxS1YrVYhw?si=d931PFgXzzTm3O__ I used aquarium tubing as the line and I bought some self watering plant spikes with adjustable valves. I attached the plant spike to a hanging 2 liter bottle, put in a valve, pushed the tubing onto the valve, ran the tubing where I needed it to drip, and add the 2nd valve at the other end of the tubing. You need a hole on the bottom (will be the top when it's hanging) of the 2 liter so air can vent and let the water flow and the valve that is attached to the plant spike should be open. Allow the tubing to fill with water, and then you're ready to set the drip at the speed you need. I know this isn't very sophisticated, I'm sure in the future I'll have a better idea than a plant spike, lol.. but for now, this is what I've been using, and it's been fantastic. Let me know if I can explain anything better or if you still have questions.
Get an angle grinder and some diamond polishing pads. This will take 2 hours at most.
Absolutely. A sander or polisher is better for rock polishing than an angle grinder. Grinders usually have high rpms. Polishers are lower.
Awesome. I added them to my cart. Do you have an instructional video?
Cool! Yes I do! 😁 ruclips.net/video/sqqop2EaPco/видео.htmlsi=ARKU14CXLh2YNKSG

How much this kit costs ?
And of which brand is this kit ?
The Dremel is $50, the sanding disc kit is about $20, and the diamond bits are $15. The links for them are in the description of this video ☺️
The Dremel is Dremel brand, sanding discs are Poliwell, and the diamond bits are NACX
What is the process for keeping the rock wet while working on it? Do you dip it and then work it for a while until it looks like it needs another dip in the water? In some of your video it looks (at times) that rock dust is coming off the stone. Very nice calcite stone btw!!
Thank you 💜 I built a water drip system! But before I had it, yes, I was dipping into a bucket of water frequently. Rock dust has always been something we've worked to mitigate exposure to. Using fans with filters and respirators. It's not an issue anymore with the water drip, though 😁 here's the link if you want to see what I came up with- ruclips.net/user/shortskzxS1YrVYhw?si=iT6yKhOIw7ZmZrR5

Thanks for sharing your process! We're finding beautiful rocks in the Sonoran desert while out on off-roading adventures, and would love to polish some of them.
That's awesome! I'm going to subscribe to your channel! I'm excited to see some adventures and rocks 😁
@@thebroadhouse Thanks! I wish I could upload pictures to the reply of a couple cool finds. We have a lot of interesting quarts in NW Peoria, AZ. As we travel around AZ, Utah and Colorado with our SXS we're starting to look for more rocks along the trail in the back-country. I just bought our first rock tumbler for the small finds. But, I'm excited to use your tips for polishing the larger stones that we find.
@KnightsAdventures How fun!! Living the dream 😎 Can't wait to see more from you guys
it looks very cool ❤😎👍
What a great video! Thank you I have been wanting to find a video that explains from beginning to end!
Thank you so much! 😁
What kind of polish do u use?
None yet. I do have some cerium oxide I've been experimenting with.
Where dod you found these lovely stones?
I got these from roughstone.rocks 😁
What speed do you run the Dremel?
Always low
Oh my. If you want to sell it I'll buy it... I'm in love with that stone!!
Send us a message on Facebook, Instagram, or TikTok, and we can talk about it ☺️
That looks like a dry grind. I thought when grinding they suppose to be wet?
Yes, wet is way better! I just didn't have a water drip system when I polished this piece.
Great video! I've been toying with the idea of polishing some of my raw rocks for some time and thanks to you I will be taking the plunge. Does the mineral oil need reapplication at some point down the line or does it act like a permanent top coat for your stone? Many thanks!
Thank you! That's awesome!! If the rocks get left alone, in a closed container, they don't seem to need reapplication. At least not yet. (My oldest polished rock is maybe 3 years old) If they're on display, collecting dust and getting touched, they will likely need another application at some point. The mineral oil cleans and shines, but it's not a permanent coat. Do you plan on making any content surrounding your polishing? I'd love to check it out if you are 😁
Do you use your phone or a GoPro to film. And what video editing software do you like. I just stated polishing like this and with a tumbler. Btw very beautiful job on these stones.
I use a Samsung Galaxy S22 to film and CapCut to edit. The pro version of CapCut is considerably expensive, so we just use the free version. It has everything you need for basic edits. I've recently started recording the voice overs on Audacity and using their noise reduction feature to clean it up. That's working really well for me. Thank you so much! Are you going to be posting videos on this channel? I'll subscribe so I can see your pretty rocks 😄
@@thebroadhouse yes. I posted one video of me polishing my first rock yesterday and posted some shorts too about finding them too. Also. I love the video with your drip system. I was just thinking about constructing one.
@Mcburney421 Im excited to see more from you! The drip system is so awesome. The diamond bits are lasting longer and there's less dust accumulating in the small cracks/dips, etc. I'm very happy with it 😁
How long can last each bit grinding stones approximately? (in both cases for hard and soft stones)
I use at least one grinding drum per rock, hard or soft. Since I've started using a water drip, I'm noticing they last longer. I might be able to start, complete one, and start another with the same drum when using a water drip.
@@thebroadhouse good to know! Have you consider to end up with some kind of diamond paste like the one used for refining the knife edge?
@albertograssi6048 Yes, I am now at a point on my polishing journey, where I'm ready to start introducing polishing compounds. I got some cerium oxide to start. 😁
What is this new tool your using
Warrior brand 10 Amp, 7 in. Variable-Speed Rotary Polisher/Sander from Harbor Freight. (polishing pads from Amazon)
Such a simplestome and yet werry beautiful with the banding in it
💜💜
Love multicolored fluorite! So beautiful!!
so beautiful and one of my favorites to polish 😊
I love how the andesite has such straight edges against the quarts
Me too! Mindat.org says, "An explosive hydrothermal event resulted in the brecciation of the deposit."
Seriously!!! I even toss the pads and adapter in my DeWalt bag, a few rocks the ole brushless a few batters and I'm off for the boat ride to work 🤣 paid lapidary 4 hrs a week 🤭
That's awesome! Way to maximize your time 😎
@@thebroadhouse definitely not a bad way to go 😅🤷 there are even days we just drag harrows and I get the whole high tide to screw with polishing 😎👌
@steampower9990 Does the rocking of the boat make it difficult? I bet you're used to it now, though 😂
That is awesome I'm going to give it a go on some turquoise stones I picked up. Thanks 😊.
Good luck and have fun 😁💜
It’s shiny but still has a lot of matte finish to it. Needs some car polishing compound on it
I do still have this one! I could try some cerium oxide
Still looks a bit dull. Can you try to use some polish on it? Or maybe spray it with some clear spray to give it that gloss we all love
Yea this is the most time I've ever spent on a rock and still couldn't get that shine. I would love to try some other things but it was a gift and I don't have it anymore. I wonder how much better the end result would've been if I had the water the whole time.
You are showing the rock wet. Need to show it dry and see how good the polish is then
I didn't polish this rock. Just showing off the polisher.
Shut the front door! Fluorite??? LOVE!!!
One of my favorites to polish! So soft and easy then it starts to shine beautifully ☺️
How long did it take may i ask
Between 2-3 hours
Pretty darned not too bad!
thank you 😁
Is that a piece of Summerville, Georgia agate.?
No this is banded calcite
Great Work .........Thank you
thank you very much!
Just found my new addiction, thank you very much!
😁
You don't use any water or lubrication?
we use water! there's a bucket offscreen
What type of gloves are those?
nitrile gloves
You ever leave some with its ruff look on a side to see the diferance ? what was an is
So thought she was goibg to toss it back in the yard
Yes sometimes! Our next video will have 4 rocks that all have polished and unpolished sides 😁 In the meantime we have these- ruclips.net/video/QDGAfx7z_Xc/видео.html ruclips.net/video/ypQuAmAEfr0/видео.html
