  • Polishing a beautiful piece of quartz? or maybe agate? A friend asked us to polish this. Initially we thought it might be an agate due to its patterns and translucency, but after asking some local rockhounds online, we believe it's quartz. Tell us what you think in the comments!

Thanks for being on online. Just stumbled onto your videos and since I have much of the Drexel equipment for other purposes I can quickly put everything together to try this myself. I immediately subscribed and looked forward to many more postings😊

here's the video where I show how it's set up-
      ruclips.net/user/shortskzxS1YrVYhw?si=d931PFgXzzTm3O__
I used aquarium tubing as the line and I bought some self watering plant spikes with adjustable valves. I attached the plant spike to a hanging 2 liter bottle, put in a valve, pushed the tubing onto the valve, ran the tubing where I needed it to drip, and add the 2nd valve at the other end of the tubing.
You need a hole on the bottom (will be the top when it's hanging) of the 2 liter so air can vent and let the water flow and the valve that is attached to the plant spike should be open. Allow the tubing to fill with water, and then you're ready to set the drip at the speed you need.
I know this isn't very sophisticated, I'm sure in the future I'll have a better idea than a plant spike, lol.. but for now, this is what I've been using, and it's been fantastic. Let me know if I can explain anything better or if you still have questions.

How do you know when to move from one grit to the next?

I know when to change grits based on look and feel. Observe and feel the rock before, during, and after each grit. You'll start to notice subtle differences. I also know when to switch based on the amount of material that's being removed. If the disc ceases to create dust, it's probably time to move on. Keep in mind that the lower grits may still create some dust even when it's time to move on because they're rough enough to continue removing material.
