LUMIX G9II in Spain | Photo Travel Vlog
I got back from Spain last week, and I took quite a few photos while there with the G9ii
A bit different to my usual video style, but don't worry - I'm not becoming a travel vlogger anytime soon
Pieces at the start and end are filmed with my G9ii and 14mm lens
Vlog content was filmed with my phone

I love the micro four thirds system (and my G9ii) but a big draw of the system for me is the smaller bodies! Lumix G9ii Bird Photography / 3 Photos and a Downpour

I set off with the goal of capturing some birds (on camera of course). A sudden downpour cut my birding trip short, but instead of packing it in, I decided to head home and share my thoughts on the setup I used - the Lumix G9ii with the 100-400mm lens. Hello Eli. I recently got into the M43 world (from Pentax) and I really enjoy what it offers. Currently I own a set of budget lenses to use with my (also budget) E-M10 Mk. II: Lumix 12-32 pancake, Lumix 12-60 kit, Olympus 40-150 plastic fantastic. I've been looking into getting a prime for streets. I'd like to know how you think about the Lumix 25 1.7 vs the 20 1.7? Thanks!

As one of the old "guys" (LOL) who has been taking photos since 1978 and who is interested in the MFT format, I must say that the biggest draw back that I see in the quality of MFT (and incidentally in the APSC and full frame formats also) is the bit depth. There is a "gritty-ness" (sorry for the neologism) or choppy look to the colors in the MFT images. Color variations do not seem to transition smoothly in the 12 bit rendering. This is very easy to see if we make an extreme comparison between a 12 bit MFT image and Fuji’s “medium” format which is 16 bit. I’m guessing that the smoothness in the medium format images is not because of the pixel size but rather the bit depth. After all, the pixel size in the Fuji GFX 100S-II 101Mp is 3.78 micron versus 3.34 micron in the (Olympus) OM System OM-1-II. The “smoothness” in the color transitions of the 16 bit images are very noticeable. Thanks for your video!

I used to be one of those who believe that FF is the holy grail of photography, nowadays even micro 4/3 seems huge because of lenses and a premium compact is all i really need most of the time. People praise the FF for its shallow depth of field above everything only because they can't be bothered to learn composition and blurring most of the background away is the easiest way to go. I was one of those people too but since ive learned to stop down and think more about what i include and exclude from my frame, my need for FF decreased dramatically. I would use my phone for 99% of my photography if the ergonomics was any better.

Truth about GX80 for video in 2024: 4K bitrate is good but AFC is unusable 1080p AFC is acceptable but bitrate is too low 12-35mm f2.8 has the best AFC 20mm f1.8 AF is surprisingly much worse

  • @sdrtcacgnrjrc

Full frame _is_ "better" in lots of ways. Fwiw I suspect the difference between m43 and APSC is not that big in terms of noise / dynamic range (open to correction there). I use m43 myself cause i can carry two smaller m43 cameras - one with a 20mm prime, the other with a 35-100mm lens - together they fit in a tiny camera bag (cm: 18x12x8 / 7"x 5"x 3"). Now i wonder how heavy and big the FF equivalent would be ...

I got the R5 and the G9II .. and the R5 has much better auto focus for moving subjects, its as small as the G9II. So if i just want a 50mm with low depth of field its the better choice. But for longer lenses i like MFT, and for video the G9II looks better to me, and better IBIS that once again comes in handy with video. So it depends on what i am shooting that day.

I have a G85 from new, with two kit lens, and now after so many years, wanted to upgrade. Looked at what the price of the G9 II is going for, not an option. So, thinking like you did without seeing your vid, went on eBay a few weeks back, and started looking around. Seen a few without a lens, and I know you get better value if you can find a camera and lens combo. Sure enough, seen an auction for a G9 with the Panny Leica 25mm and ended getting that package for 615 U$, which is a heck of a lot cheaper, than what I could find in Canada. Even though I ended up adding duty and tax, been wanting that Leica 25mm prime for a while. All in all, think I purchased it just fine, as both camera and lens are in excellent mint condition, a 32g card, box, charger with both cords, and an extra battery in that. I agree on that nonsense about megapixels, as what this camera has is fine for 95% of what I will do. And, not sweat on the remaining 5%. I will always be a micro 4/3 dude, with all the dedicated gear, including TTL flashes. Especially as the lenses are priced right, and many decent choices with both Panny and Olly, and even Sigma Art lenses. Too many get caught up with the latest and greatest tech, heck that will never change, as tech always changes. But, and yet, this a big but, just go out and shoot, with what you have, and make it work, since, it probably will. Challenge yourself, and learn your equipment ( I know I have to learn this used new tech I have), have fun doing so, and don’t sweat the small stuff. In ending, I might look for a used Olly Pen, for street photography, set it and just shoot, since I have enough micro 4/3 lenses, and now a great 25mm prime.

Thanks for doing this video. I have been looking at the GX9 and because it’s so expensive the GX85, I had also seen the GX7 for sale for a good price. But now after your video, I think I might be good with the GX8. I didn’t even know there was one. I do at some point want to upgrade to a G9MII or an OM-1MII but I don’t think I am ready to spend $2000. So perhaps this will tide me over! Just FYI I have the OMD-EM5 and got the Olympus 45mm because of your video and I love it, thank you!

The fungus lens probably would have smoked the bodycap lens tbh. I don't mind cleaning up lenses but you'd be surprised at how much fungus a lens can have and still take good photos in many situations. Thanks for the video, I enjoyed your exploration! Edit: Oh, I see you said the same thing later, I misheard the first time. Well in that case, totally agreed :)

There is a firmware update available for this lens on the Panasonic website which updates it to provide Dual IS on Panasonic bodies with image stabilisation. It works a treat on my GH5 Mk 2.

For those who don’t appreciate what is “good enough”, MFT is not for them. They should go for a system of biggest sensor they can afford. Just one reminder, monitor is not the right medium to appreciate a photo, particularly zooming in. Look at a real print from a MFT image side by side a FF or MF before having your conclusion.

I was going to wait until Black Friday, but then thought that with this deal, I could enjoy it during the summer when the weather is good and not wait until a dark gloomy Belgian winter. I enjoyed the video, it was well done. I suspect that the 24 by 36mm, 35mm full frame became the norm because most people had been shooting 35mm film. And I have never been a big megapixel fiend since three of my biggest prints, 24 by 36 inches were from 5.1 MP JPEGs.

I have been using a G9 for three and a half years and a GM1 for ten. As I get a lot more use out of the GM1, I would love a new smaller form M43 camera from Lumix with phase detect autofocus and a flippy screen if possible. I am not so bothered about it having an EVF or a pop-up flash. In fact, I forgot the GM1 had one until a few weeks ago when I accidently activated it 🤪. I can shoot at ISO 6400 and the noise reduction software {DxO Photolab} does an amazing job of cleaning up the images.

Not all MFT lenses are stabilized. In fact most Olympus ones are not (only the big tele zooms are). Panasonic puts OIS in all lenses, even small kit-lenses, because most of their entry level cameras don't have IBIS. Olympus instead puts IBIS in most cameras (in fact no camera released after 2011 came without IBIS) so most of their less expensive lenses don't have OIS. In theory IBIS-only should give a little bit better results than OIS-only, but how much that translates in practice is debatable. And with higher-end cameras and lenses it wouldn't matter either way as both Olympus and Panasonic would have dual stabilization.

There are really only 1 (and a half) downsides of m43; lack of bokeh on zoom lenses, the most you can get is f/1.7 from the Panny 10-25mm and 25-50mm, in FF terms that f/3.4 however f/2.8 zooms are plentiful on full frames. M43 really needs a zoom lens somewhere in between f/2 and f/2.8 with a focal range of 12-75mm. This isn't really up for debate either, most photographers will either want/need background separation at some point; assuming that they'll be content with shooting at f/2.8 on M43 and get f/5.6 ff equivalent bokeh.
