Crocheting End Of School Year Gifts For My Kids’ Teachers | Crochet With Me
when i was looking into potential beginner sites for selling my merch i had considered etsy until i saw the fees and practices. Needless to say im sticking to kofi.
You need to watch Ash Bentley youtube.com/@ashbentley?si=Qal1UeKDvbHcbsf4 she does different crafts and is hilarious. Going to order some Keche yarn now. Thanks for the review ❤
A problem ive had as an etsy seller is making it a drop shipper platform changes peoples expectations. I made embroidered patches, my own designs on an old home machine. They weren't slways flawless. Sometimes a loose thread would be missed, or shipping would take longer because i couldn't get into the city to go to a post office. I couldn't handle the complaints from people asking why an item hadn't been shipped out by the next day, because it hadn't been physically made yet. I made things to order snd people were just assuming i was some chinese factory shop.
It's only been in the last year that I started exploring different types hooks by buying 1 size from different brands. What I have found is that for amigurumi my go to is the Tulip Rose (tried the Red didn't like it as much) and for kits from Mary Maxim or Herrschnerrs just use Clover otherwise for some reason you'll run out of yarn. And I definitely agree, do not use in-line hooks for amigurumi.
I'm a buyer. I wish, like social platforms, there was a way to block a user (seller) so that when I search for an item that seller does not show up ever again. I come across so many chinese made garbage sellers & would love to just block them from my search feeds
As a buyer, I would absolutely shop Etsy more if it weren't for these issues. I finally am in a stable place in life and want to support more artists, but it's so time consuming to sort through all the drop shippers on Etsy and I don't usually have the energy for it.
Working on a Dino lovie for my nephew for Christmas! Almost finished with all the giftthfor the littles. Lol
Foam roller?? I will go see what they are!
Me and my sister in law were looking to make a shop together but I guess not. Do you know any other websites in similarity to Etsy we could try? We mostly want to sell aquatic plants, aquarium shrimp, bleach art shirts, handmade toys etc.
As a buyer I absolutely hate Etsy now. I used to get recommended the most random and ridiculous art (that's how I wanted it) and now it's like: Tumbler, tumbler, simple gold necklace, simple gold necklace, AI, simple gold necklace. THE SIMPLE GOLD NECKLACE MARKET IS FULL. IT'S PACKED. IT'S DONE. WE HAVE ENOUGH SIMPLE GOLD NECKLACES. I want my weird freaky sexy Mothman art prints back! Where are they??
1) AI is here to stay. Stop complaining about it like a really old person talking about 'the good old days'. 2) AI isn't the problem, how it's USED is the problem. If you've ever used a computer program to design or edit artwork, then you've used AI. All those features in Photoshop, Canva, etc.? Those are technically AI, even though no one calls it that. 3) Etsy is a publicly traded company, they exist to make money for their stockholders. It's against their TOS to sell mass produced items - with a few minor exceptions. If you see something on their that's obviously from Temu, AliExpress, etc. and YOU don't report them to Etsy, you're part of the problem. 4) If you want Etsy the way it used to be, start your own company. No? Why not? You don't have the money? It's too difficult? You could do it if you really wanted to, you just don't, so stop complaining.
I’m not reading all that but congrats or I’m sorry that happened or whatever.
I do events and whenever I sell any crochet patterns I put their name on the final items
A textbook example of enshittification as Cory Doctorow called it.
:) Etsy is a bunch woksters, they can not improve
if you never leave the platform and let etsy do what they want, no change will occur, no matter how hard you complain about it
Independent EGL fashion is hit pretty hard. You'll spend 300 euros on a piece and there's a good chance it's still awful quality dropshipping
IMHO, Etsy put the nail in their coffin when they banned adult products. It might not die today, or next week, or even next year, but completely driving off a large portion of the people that helped make your platform never ends well for anyone, regardless of your thoughts on the products themselves.
I loved Etsy in the beginning, a place for hand-made and vintage things. I had a shop from the beginning and sold reasonably well from it. I never liked the difficulty of getting support if needed. I hated the influx of stuff that was neither vintage nor hand-made, nor even related to either. When they required the use of their payment system, when sellers had to start waiting for their money, I did not accept the new TOS and I closed my shop. I still look there to buy once in a while but not like I used to, and never as the first place to go.
I think that unfortunately corporate greed will always take over… they need to return to their roots
I was about to open my own etsy shop when a lot of these problems started going down... so i've just... never "opened" my shop. did all the forms and set up and... got scared. i'm just selling my stickers/notebooks/bags and sheet music in person only, at a market stall... it's. .. not the best , but at least i don't deal with etsy, i figure (due to health i'm not allowed to "stress" myself so... i figured the additional stress small artists are going through on etsy wouldn't be okay ..) which is a shame.. i'm a little nobody so i don't have much of a market, or audience. and everytime i think maybe i'll be brave and try etsy--something else happens that makes me cringe away...
Have any of y'all heard of Tedooo? Made any sales? Where are we jumping ship to? I know Tedooo is only handmade, and it has a social media function to it, so it's very community driven. It's quite new, and I don't know anyone personally who uses it or has heard of it, outside of some inspiration posts. (Great work is posted on there for sure, especially in fiber arts-crochet included, of course). If etsy wants to become the next amazon/temu with an artistic twist, I say we just leave the platform and sell some where else. Sucks to start anew, but better than staying in toxic waters, ya know? I don't want to help Etsy make money if they don't care about the actual artists behind their platforms. );
Customer here: I think Etsy will decline like Amazon. Only cheap fake stuff. Does anyone remember Amazon as an online book store?! As a customer you need to keep really close attention what you are buying from who. I highly recommend using filters (like country) then buying. I want(ed) to buy an acorn wooden talisman. Turns out it’s from Asia. Source unknown. This is so sad. I like Etsy’s old concept, I like to support small businesses. A lot of them trying to build there own websites nowadays.
I have had my Etsy store since 2015 for illustrations and never got a sale. During 2017 I made my own anime makeup brand and made it on square space as this was my dream more than a hobbit! I got sales but not enough. I know have put my makeup on Etsy and it’s going well but not as amazing as I thought it would be. I also saw that my competitors are a lot of AliExpress makeup brand which is super sad as I make my own glosses, work with actual illustrators and design my own packaging! Last time I saw a makeup pallete with AI illustrations! It’s terrible!!! There is this fairy tale inspired makeup brand and you can see she used AI in her illustrations and when caught she blamed her illustrator from scamming her for one product but noooo it’s all the packaging( also she uses her old accounts to comment and bring traction) just scammers everywhere!
i hate the advertisments saying “made by people” SO MUCH because theres so much ai slop they don’t care about on etsy
I have sold through etsy off an on, and have pretty much given up on it at this point. I can't compete in woodworking against dropshipped garbage with ai images. I make good stuff, I think, but just to break even I have to charge more than the schlock so why would anyone buy from me?
Etsy cares about stuff being sold on their platform. It doesn't care who sells, it doesn't care who buys, so long as the traffic is happening. So yeah. All the small sellers of genuine handmade goods? Etsy as a company doesn't give a shit about your complaints and won't change a thing, because in its eyes you're are not the big traffic driver. It used you to grow but there came a point where you couldn't provide any more growth. Every single platform on the Internet has had it's rise, hayday and downfall - or will in time, unless it creates an ecosystem like amazon. Etsy has reached peak in about 22-23 and is tipping over the point. In terms of usability, it's gone over some time ago. It might keep on trucking as a fancy ali express, but it won't ever be the platform for small creators it used to be, ever again. It used you to grow and build a userbase and now it's cashing in.
I still buy on Etsy since I shop very specifically but I still hate seeing the custom and personalized items either be AI or drop shipped. Also they have a problem of people making fake posts reselling Nintendo switches. For a while it felt like a scammier resell version of EBay. Also when I got scammed, the only way fast way to contact Etsy support was via email. Also they couldn't help me and told me to contact the bank and PayPal. PayPal deemed me to be in the wrong and I lost $250
oh my god im so glad i saw this video bc i needed to see if a seller i really like had come back from hiatus xP
i bought the dino as my first ever amigurumi and had to completely scrap it bc it was so hard for me 😂 the yarn split SO BAD!!! i should’ve known that it would be too much for me, back to wearables and blankets for me 😂
Thank you.
As you're talking about hand pain, here I am massaging my own hands, as I'm currently making a belt for my wife. The belt has two strands, one of which is a 2mm macrame cord, and being a belt, I am cinching down on my stitches and making them very tight so the resulting belt is dense and a bit stiff. 2mm cord, stranded with a #4 medium yarn for colorsplash, with a 6mm hook, done tight, makes my left hand fingers want to revolt. Also, my daughter is named Fiona after Princess Fiona from Shrek, so can confirm... it is a compliment! :)
I’m working on a cardigan while watching. I so understand how you feel about the sensory issues with hooks. I have some with seams and I can crochet with them for about five minutes before I have to switch. I’ve never been a pattern tester but wouldn’t mind trying. If you need a tester, I’m willing!
Great points. Honesty I am always looking for differnent options off ETSY becasue it's so difficult to tell whether something actually is from a small buisness.
Sadly,I am one of those people who stopped shopping on Etsy because wading through everything to find actually handmade stuff has become such a frustrating experience.
I left selling on etsy and went over to Go Imagine
Man, I miss old Etsy - really insightful to see how things work on a seller’s end. The increased fees are such a slap in the face, especially towards smaller business! Not to mention the accounts being removed - that’s happened to so many people I’ve known for no reason. I feel like Etsy used to feel more like a *real* community. They fully deserve all the losses they incur for abandoning their sellers (ARTISTS). As a buyer I do still use Etsy, but now I only ever buy from people with *other* social media accounts (instagram, RUclips, twitter, ravelry, etc.) that prove they’re a real person and do indeed make their own art.
As a buyer, i don't go to Etsy anymore. I dont want to buy from a drop-shipper or reseller, and i don't want to have to vet every shop i look at.
I haven't made a single sale since March on Etsy, I have no idea what to do :(
Did you know that illegal substances of the psychedelic nature are sold on Etsy? I've bought them!
A knock-on side effect of all this, specifically of the crapification of Etsy's offerings i.e. seemingly 95% mass-produced garbage : it's also training BUYERS to treat the site like Shein or Amazon. They click "buy now" without viewing all the images, without reading the full description, without a second thought ... and then "I NEED TO RETURN THESE, they don't match my dining room AT ALL" (on a listing that says "custom made to order, no returns" and also very clearly says in multiple places "custom colors available, I can match literally anything, you can send me a photo or a freaking fabric swatch or paint chip in the actual mail"). So now you're out the sale profit, AND the many many hours it took, AND the raw materials, AND you have an order of four or six or eight custom-made (in my case bamboo placemats and wood chargers) that you likely won't be able to sell to someone else. After steadily declining orders despite stellar reviews and three *absurd* returns in one month, I quit. The BF still has some of his record clocks up there (at least the ones that Etsy hasn't rolled over on a meritless "intellectual property infringement" complaint and removed), but I took down all of my listings -- about 150 items -- and bailed. I don't miss it.
Deleted Etsy after I reported a CLEARLY AI "custom portrait" artist charging $10 per drawing (lmao) that didn't disclose that their art was made with AI. And Etsy replied that it was actually fine to do that, because "AI prompt generators are still participating in the creation of the work"
I used to buy and sell on etsy regularly. I gave up. Several times i saw other sellers blatantly selling poor quality prints of my one off watercolours and after i complained about it, not only were those items not removed i had Several of my paintings removed because they complained about me back! (Their logic was because they were selling 500 units and i had one i must have coppied theirs despite mine being an original painting and theirs being a print with my signature sloppily edited out 😡) closed my shop after that. For buying i have a 5 page rule. I look for what i want but if i can't find it amongst the ai and dropshipped bs from even a single proper seller within 5 pages I either make it myself or buy it elsewhere. Its become a trash lottery like buying stuff from Instagram. They don't protect genuine sellers or buyers.
Enshittification, Cory Doctorow, google it, etc
This is a random complaint, but Etsy is especially annoying me as a seller this year because even though they have upped the emails inviting you to online workshops, guides etc "supporting sellers more" …and yet every time I try and click on one, really trying to take their platform seriously after 4 years of using it and constantly getting disheartened at all the the drop shippers, AI tat, suspected illicit listings etc….the links don't even work! I keep getting caught out and wasting my time trying to actually utilise the sited it seems like it's just a way to try and draw you in to upgrade your account to Etsy Plus. I'm kind of over it with how much we pay for what is the "handmade" equivalent of Ebay.
YES OMG as a buyer I have to do SO much fucking sleuthing and I have still gotten burned. If I see that a seller has their own website I will buy from there instead, but it's definitely not a perfect system (you touched on this slightly, I believe.) For patterns specifically, I mostly browse/buy them on Ravelry (but I definitely don't mind being redirected to Etsy and viewing the pattern writer's Etsy store.) I'm pretty good at judging AI knit/crochet from the real stuff, but I still have never gone to Etsy for patterns first lol. (AI is also popping up on Rav..... somehow. So it's not perfect, either.) A specific gripe of mine is related to the dropshipping/stolen photo disease that is running rampant there... sooo many duplicate photos. I hate it! I hate it so much! The same with one photo and then a long video showcasing the item or a similar thing like it or whatever. I hate random video SO MUCH. I understand that Etsy must be pushing it on sellers because it's always inserted as the second "photo", it starts autoplaying when you mouse over any item, but I actively avoid watching them and it SUCKS when there are no other photos.
A baby yota for my family
Please make a video on the yarn I need to know that yarn drives me nuts
I have a recent favorites video coming out tomorrow where I talk about a couple I like but I might do a dedicated video to chenille yarns that I like.
@Tfwcrochet I would love that thank you!!!
I worked on a leaf for sleeping bag caterpillar by crochet.by.chelsea. My pet peeve is the yellow sweet snuggles lite. Hate it! It takes so much energy…it’s like using wet yarn.
Specifically the yellow color?
I realize that the issue of reselling is a real problem and needs to be taken seriously, but it's actually crazy to be like "I didn't know what I was buying" when it takes a few seconds max to screenshot the item and run it through a quick google lens search. It's so easy to tell when you run an item through google lens and immediatly a hundred shein/temu/ebay/amazon links with the exact same pictures or exact same product pop up. Most of the time it's so obvious to me just from the way the product looks and is advertised alone, I don't even NEED to image search it
I personally think that small independent artists should be allowed to sell things like enamel pins or acrylic charms made through third- party manufacturers so long as they're made using THEIR OWN ARTWORK AND DESIGNS.
