My very first amigurumi was a red heart kit last year. I did the blue bird. I also found the hook to be unusable, so used my own hook. The yarn split awfully and i struggled a lot!! I thought it was me since I struggled with holding the yarn, keeping tension, etc. Since I was new to crochet in general, I went really slowly, so as to avoid the yarn splitting being an obstacle (again, i thought it was me). I really learned how to crochet when I bought some Woobles kits. The yarn is for beginners in those kits which helped me tremendously. Unfortunately, I bought 3 more of these red heart kits, because they are only $10 and I thought they are cute and the instructions and design were worth it. I have yet to try those kits, so wish me luck!!
You could use the patterns with your own yarn and use the stuffing and stitch markers? Sometimes I take scrap yarn and cut it up a little bit and mix it in with stuffing or use it to embroider faces/other details. Just some ideas!
I've been acquiring crochet kits to have things to do (I've never crochet before but want to get into it) but haven't tried any of them yet...unfortunate to see the yarn in this is bad since I got the cat one. Glad I saw all this tho, I might just bite the bullet and get some nicer yarn to replace the yarns in my other cheap kits (if the $10 walmart kit has difficult yarn lord only knows how the dollar tree yarn is. 😂)
I see both sides, with amigurumi its implied a dec is a sc stitch but red heart likely keeps their terms the same for all of their patterns to not cause confusion so specifying the type of decrease is helpful
Thanks for your honest review. I bought one of these kits a month or so ago, having never crocheted before, and quickly realised this was not for beginners. So I watched tutorials on the basics, and luckily found a tutorial for two of the four animals in the pack, which I was able to follow and create a lil tiger, which does look quite cute. I persevered and made the next animal by following another tutorial, and then managed the last two with the instructions only. However, the yarn is just awful…totally agree with you…it splits constantly, especially when working small limbs where you have to push the hook into a tight stitch at an awkward angle, and I had to redo so many stitches. The smaller pieces of yarn for eyes, muzzle etc nearly ran out too. I bought my kit at a discount store in the UK, and as it contained four animals (lion, tiger, giraffe and elephant) for £9.99 I thought it worked out at pretty good value, especially as I now have the know-how from being thrown in at the deep end with this kit, plus I kept the instructions, so can make these again using better quality yarn (Scheepjes Catona maybe) So this is definitely not recommended for beginners, and unless you buy this at a discounted price, I really don’t think it is worth buying🐯
Oof! Bless you for not giving up! I definitely would have. Despite the splitting yarn, I do think he turned out kind of cute, but Tiny the T-Rex (Rachel’s version) looked so so much better! 💕
Lol (Rachel’s version) got me giggling. I really wanted to give up. Pretty proud of myself for pushing through. I had high hopes but they were shattered 😓
Just bought the kit for the frog. The hook is fine, the yarn splits annoyingly but I fully read the instructions ahead of time and while I dislike the explanation for the magic ring and ‘don’t join’ the instructions worked great. Very cute and I may do another frog with better yarn.
Your T-Rex is WAYYYYY cuter!!! Thank you for the honest review. And I wouldn't be able to use that hook either because I use more of the hook than just the end.
This sucks to say but I feel like yarn splitting is almost a trademark Red Heart thing, all the yarn I use from them always ends up scruffy and splitting, especially if I have to restart projects!
I feel like you should have continued to used the hook that came with the kit! That way we can see exactly how the kit it within its self!! But love the video and your hair is extremely beautiful!!! ❤
Hi Rachel 👋 I am normally a garment/blanket crochet girlie, but you inspired me to try amigurumi again. I bought a the nightmare before Christmas kit to make Jack & Sally from the movie. I'm excited to get into it 😊
@Tfwcrochet The yarn in the kit splits very easily, so I'm using dk cotton from k+c (Joann fabrics). I had bought it to do other characters in the kit & a clover hook b/c I need ergonomic hooks. I'm going to try & use some of the other yarn from the kit, which looks to be spun tighter.
I’ve been slowly learning to crochet with Red Heart since I saw them in the store. My first two were dead ends for now (the frog and the llama) but I’m finally getting the hang of it with the kitten kit!
I did this as my first ever amigurumi. It obviously didn't turn great but this video made me feel so much better! 😂 I didn't read the instructions, I also did the sc-dc as single crochet and decrease 😅 I kind of want to remake it again with other yarn. Let's see what happens.
I have wanted tontry one of these kits but all of your issues was what was keeping me from buying them and I was just going off of visuals. So nope will not waste my money. I also think the Dec was strange. But I teach knitting and crochet to students and we use lots of videos from different t resources in class and I often run into patterns that I personally think need to be rewritten. Marlybird for instance has a great Sparkles the Unicorn pattern. But my students would never understand it if I wasn't making it with them. Go read it. It is a free pattern and worth making. Teaches some great techniques. I teach kids ages 6 to 18 so they are just learning.

Stumbled across your video with this crochet kit partially started in my yarn projects bag. Glad I did! I also have another kit from the same series on deck. I may be changing up the yarn and treating the kits like relatively expensive patterns if the yarn is too splitty 😅
Love your video Coming from thd UK I hate Red heart is it usually poor quality I'm lucky we have so much choice here Loved your take on it the pattern thanks for sharing xx❤
I've been crocheting for quite a while, and I've had trouble with Yarnspirations patterns. I had to write it out on notebook paper to make sense of it.
Sooo last year my mom bought me my first crochet kit from amazon (forgot the price) and it wasn't the best. The yarn split a lot, and the hook didn't work for any other yarn but the one they gave me, and I really didn't understand the tutorial. I had to get my mom to do the tutorial by herself, and teach me. (Maybe it's just me) I bought a new yarn and some hooks yesterday and I'm doing much better with that!
I bought this same kit a few weeks ago and have the same wonky hook and the same frustration with the splitting yarn. I think I have made it to round six and then packaged it back up.
I bought one of these on a whim when I saw them at Walmart so I'd have something to do while I waited for the bus after work, and it was awful. I hate the yarn with the burning passion of a thousand suns because I'm a fast crocheter and it slowed me down. I love the pattern though and think it's cute, so maybe I'll try and make it with my own yarn and see if it's less frustrating.
I decided to try a circulo kit after your vampire video and the one I got is a doozy. The kit is a sleeping puppy so the yarn is a chenille and the yarn is terrible. The yarn sheds and if your stitches are too tight especially for the magic ring and tug too much all the fuzz comes off. I just hope I have enough yarn to finish it.
I bought this kit in the cat pattern. I am a beginner and this was my first and last attempt at amigurumi. I cried and beat myself up for not being able to complete it. I’ve sworn off amigurumi forever and moved on to garments.
Noooooo don’t give up!! I’ve been crocheting for almost 15 years and this was one of the worst amigurumi experiences I’ve ever had. There are lots of good free patterns out there and WAAAY better yarn
I’m not sure if anyone has mentioned this but there are 2 different styles of hooks. Inline and tapered. The inline is much better for yarn that tends to split because the yarn doesn’t slip off so easily. I can’t for the life of me use a tapered hook for yarn like cotton or anything with a loose weave. But the inline style hook is a dream!
@@jessicadavis2169 I’m the opposite. I can’t use an inline hook for amigurumi at all. I like it for looser stitches but it’s tapered all the way for me for Ami
I haven't tried a kit yet. I've only made amagrumi from patterns. Maybe I'll try Michael's. (I'm not paying $30-$50 for a Woobles kit!). I'm new to your channel and enjoyed your video today. I'll be seeing you more. 😎💜
You have such better hand dexterity than me and I couldn’t even try to make that with the straggly yarn. 😂 at least I know these kits are a huge pass for me. And yay for the treat yo self!
It was NOT easy. That’s why I just let it split at a certain point. Not worth the hand pain. And thank you. My daughter immediately stole it as I knew she would 😅
The first one though cute in its own way does not give a 'hug me, take me home vibe' might make a cute infant decor but the purple one defiantly has more cuteness attraction.
I teach Teen/Tween fiber art and was looking at these the other day for end of year trivia ( as a way to revisit what we have learned already) i decided against them because its a really thin yarn and hook that my new crafters just are not ready for. I was wondering if that was the right choice but seeing your review has cemented that I was right not to get these as prizes
tbh i think using a cotton yarn for a beginner kit is a good way to get people discouraged from trying crocheting. i've been crocheting for 20 years and i JUST used cotton for the first time and it took me a lil bit of getting used to bc it doesn't have any give like acrylic yarns do so u have to be careful not to do stitches too tight or ur not gonna be about to easily get the hook in and out of stitches on later rows, it doesn't like to stay twisted as well as acrylic does so i had to be careful not to split the yarn and it also seems too thin of weight for someone to try for the first time. that's one thing i do thing is good about woobles kits is that they're using a large tshirt material yarn so beginners can actually see their stitches better, i think opting for a thinner yarn is a bad idea and gonna make it frustrating for anyone who picks this up thinking it's a beginner kit.
i bought the dino as my first ever amigurumi and had to completely scrap it bc it was so hard for me 😂 the yarn split SO BAD!!! i should’ve known that it would be too much for me, back to wearables and blankets for me 😂
My very first crochet was the cat from this brand. The yarn was horrible, and I ran out of it. I did a kit after with the t-shirt yarn, and it was much better.
I noticed that you were scooping the yarn below the hook and pulling the yarn which creates a tighter stitch for amigurumi. Most people yarn over. It makes a huge difference.
I have always done the yarn under method. It is what works for me. I simply can not crochet any other way lol. But that means that hooks like this don't really work for me. I also feel like it uses less yarn and I feel for people who yarn over because they would for sure run out in these kits.
I got the frog one awhile back and havent touched it cause I saw the yarn and was afraid of splitting or being bad to work with, so I basically just paid for the pattern since I havent used the kit yet.
Omg it’s crazy that I saw this vid bc like last week my friend bought this kit and tried it out and since she was a beginner, she said that it was a little too hard and asked me if I could take it home and crochet it. I obviously said yes because obviously lol but as soon as I got home, I realize that the hook small was really too small like I could barely crochet with the yarn it was so small so I just use one of mine and I found that yarn split like really really really bad that there would be like little string hanging out everywhere. I end up not even finishing the whole head and I ended up getting some of my own yarn and crocheted her a dinosaur myself loll!
My frirend bouggt me the teddy bear. I had no problem with the yar on that one. She also bought me 2 more that we4e on clearance for $5 and i hate the 6arn. I cant do do stitches without the yarn splitting. She got the cat and bunny. And all 3 hooks that igot withthe kits are the same shape as the one you got.
I've been curious about those kits. I'm far from a beginner, but I always wonder how bad/good they are. I've mostly not bothered because the yarn looks super splitty even through the bag, and also I have access to way more interesting patterns than most of these kits. Kits always feel strange to me, in terms of difficulty. If you aren't a beginner, you probably already have all the materials you need for a project like this and know where to find good patterns. Though I know there are people who just like working from kits I guess. Admittedly from what you said about the pattern, I think an adventurous beginner could probably manage, except for how terrible the yarn is
I have found that new crochetiers seem to think that “small items”, as in some kits, are for beginners. I agree the package needs to say what level experience is needed. In my experience, most “kits” are not good.
I thought about getting one of these kits, one that 'looked cute'. Well, something told me to skip it, that I could get better/cuter patterns online. After seeing your review, I"m very glad I did not buy the kit.
I wonder if this is a problem with recycled cotton yarn - I bought some recycled cotton yarn for a bolero and it split like nobody's business. I was using a 4 or 4.5 hook, so it's not a small size thing. It was really disappointing, because it was so soft and such a pretty colour and natural fibre and presumably good for the environment, but an absolute nightmare to work with.
I found a crochet kit for a tiny owl at the dollar store for 1$!! Directions were an absolute joke.. It gave you a definition for working in the round and working in rows, but you did not need both. The only directions on how to make the owl were first row 10, Second row 12, Third row 14.. Up to 18.. And then 18 for however, many rows… Then it said to make the wings and the feet, which should be working in the round, row 1..2.. I know how to crochet so I can make it from the picture. But Those were the absolute worst directions I’ve ever seen in my life.
Red Heart has always been awful. First bought it in 1976. My hands itch just thinking about it. I have tried to give them the benefit of the doubt from time to time, and just touching a skein is enough for me to nope nope back to the quality aisle.
Not even 5 min in and what’s included is above and beyond what Yarnspirations included in their advent calendar (which is garbage) 😡 As for the rain, it’s the amigurumi gods crying
Avid long time chrocheter here: every kit I've tried, no matter the brand, has crappy warn and an even crappier hook. WHY do they do that? It's very frustrating.. The ONLY kit I can recall that had workable yarn was the pickachu kit.
I bought this kit for myself and I bought the other dinosaur. The yarn and hook sucked so bad I had to use a different yarn and hook. It add me thing I couldn’t do amigurumi. Luckily I didn’t give up
Thoughts on the kit I tried. The hook was unusable because the cover was supposed to go up to the jog and they did it too short. Pattern was designed by a non American and designed using the yarn under technique so I ran out of yarn using the regular technique. Red heart should have realized and tested before releasing the kit. I feel it was a money grab and not a real kit for crocheters.
I love amigurumi bcs it's usually small so short project that usually needs a few hours to complete. Easier to sell too if you want to turn it into into a small business.
i hope you sent feedback to Red Heart regarding your experience, good and not so good. will certainly skip this kit. thanks for sharing your experience.
100% agree this seems like a real miss on the kit. Poor materials in a kit thats whole point is being a one stop material shop is insane and unacceptable to me especially coming from red heart. You could easily buy these materials in excess quantity for under $10 and maybe even be able to get a better quality hook as well.
WHAT IS THAT LAP CUSHION THING CALLED AND WHERE DO I GET ONE‽‽ omg that'd be SO helpful for my joints and whatnot Yes, they wrote the decrease wrong/weird I also am a very tight crocheter I find it interesting you had enough of the purple since you did extra stitches and added an extra round, but barely had enough of the pink That hook is weird -- how are you supposed to be able to tell which portion of it gives you the right gauge? That could contribute to people running out of yarn too early Oh and the price -- just bc other kits charge astronomically more doesn't mean the price for this one was good, considering there was issues with most of the materials in it (especially that crazy awful yarn) Just a weird kit all around. Guess they care more about money than the actual product/customer's satisfaction
I am learning how to crochet just to make this stupid kit for my amazing girlfriend because its cute and i know that she'll love it she loves dinosaurs but I've never crocheted before and i feel like this kit is gonna make me have a stroke 😭😂
The pattern good it just how they write it and the yarn if you use your own yarn it might work out my mom bought 2 of these kits for me idk why tho and i try one and quit trying that kit bc i was like a month into crochet and did not wont to get mad so I stop but now i can use very fluffy yarn and the pluishes aare cute

Writing decreases like that is very weird, if they wanted to specify that it was singlecrochets i woul have expected them to put sctog

I started out crocheting with red heart yarn and my crochet friends have good luck with it but I do not 😭 it splits like crazy
Dang it! I bought the llama one and was looking forward to making it. 😢
awh it's still worth a try! Maybe just be prepared to try with your own yarn
My hook in my kit was the same 😖 last time I buy one of these.
The hook looks like it has an angle in it instead of being smooth.
Was this hook built by Minecraft?
Hahahha my kids got a kick out of this comment
My very first crochet was the cat from this brand. The yarn was horrible, and I ran out of it. I did a kit after with the t-shirt yarn, and it was much better.
Oh no. I can’t imagine this being your first foray into crocheting. Glad you stuck with it!
I appreciate your honesty. I used to do a lot of Amigurumi not much in a while. I love your crochet pillow. Where can I find one?
It is called a boppy pillow! Original intent for breast feeding
I was going to get some of these as gifts, but I will just make my own version
Making your own version of a kit sounds fun!
I got the frog one awhile back and havent touched it cause I saw the yarn and was afraid of splitting or being bad to work with, so I basically just paid for the pattern since I havent used the kit yet.
The frog one looks pretty cute! That’s the other one I considered picking up.
I’ve been crocheting for 2 years and this was the hardest thing I ever had to overcome during crocheting 😭
Tiny looks like the YEET dinosaur meme lmaoo
My frirend bouggt me the teddy bear. I had no problem with the yar on that one. She also bought me 2 more that we4e on clearance for $5 and i hate the 6arn. I cant do do stitches without the yarn splitting. She got the cat and bunny. And all 3 hooks that igot withthe kits are the same shape as the one you got.
Your dinosaur is way cuter!!!
Thank you! I do kind of love her
I had to ask my mother what decreases written like that meant. It is very confusing, especially when you're sort of new to the hobby.
I have the patterns but I'm using my own yarn, hook, needle, and stitch makers.
In my experience, most “kits” are not good.
hi ! what type of hooks so you use and where do you get them?
Hi! I mostly use Clover hooks which you can get on Amazon or at most craft stores or on the Clover website.
lol the face when talking about the election. FELT.
Uuuuuuuggggghhhh filming Rachel didn’t know yet 😓
I think he’s cute ❤
Ah, so as a crochet novice, it's not entirely me being useless that's making this kit so hard!
Not at all! I’ve been at it for 15 years and this was so hard 🥲
As soon as you showed us the yarn, i went "oh boy...." I would hate using that. I may have missed it but how was the needle in the kit?
I didn’t mention it much but it was pretty fine. Nothing special but way better than the one in the Michaels kit I tried.
Looks good
I got a Red Heart kit that I had so much trouble with i never finished it.
It’s rough! I really wanted this to be good because it is affordable and accessible but noooo
The only directions on how to make the owl were
first row 10, Second row 12, Third row 14..
I have tried to give them the benefit of the doubt from time to time, and just touching a skein is enough for me to nope nope back to the quality aisle.
what songs did you use throughout your video?? i thought that the first in the intro was very pretty and would love to know!! ❤
Thank you! I just use CapCut to edit all my video and I use all their free music. Picking out music is one of my favorite parts.😊
I really like making amigurumi with cotton yarn but that looked like the worst!
Terrrrible. I like some cotton more than others but this was the worst I’ve ever tried.
Not even 5 min in and what’s included is above and beyond what Yarnspirations included in their advent calendar (which is garbage) 😡 As for the rain, it’s the amigurumi gods crying
Oh really? I haven’t heard of that. I’ve been looking for a yarn advent calendar but I can’t find one.
If you're looking for an advent calendar, Woodles also has one
@daliam8715she doesn’t like t shirt yarn and that’s all they have
Avid long time chrocheter here: every kit I've tried, no matter the brand, has crappy warn and an even crappier hook.
Luckily I didn’t give up
I got chirp the bird for 5 dollars. I am struggling lol. Im a beginner, so i had to find other videos to teach me the terminology.
Oh no!
I hate to say it but it does feel like a money grab to me too. I don’t know how the lady in the video used the hook so easily.
Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. ;)
Alternative title for this video lol
I’m not understanding the appeal of the amigarumi. Three months from now, my cats will have batted the toys underneath the couch.
I love amigurumi bcs it's usually small so short project that usually needs a few hours to complete. Easier to sell too if you want to turn it into into a small business.
You are correct, t Rex did not have spikes.
i hope you sent feedback to Red Heart regarding your experience, good and not so good. will certainly skip this kit. thanks for sharing your experience.
Too bad the experience with the T-Rex didn't turn out the way you wanted, but I just LOVED the little ladybug kitty!
Right? So cute and my daughter stole it immediately.
100% agree this seems like a real miss on the kit. Poor materials in a kit thats whole point is being a one stop material shop is insane and unacceptable to me especially coming from red heart. You could easily buy these materials in excess quantity for under $10 and maybe even be able to get a better quality hook as well.
I was hoping for so much more. I have a soft spot in my heart for red heart but they let me down.
WHAT IS THAT LAP CUSHION THING CALLED AND WHERE DO I GET ONE‽‽ omg that'd be SO helpful for my joints and whatnot
Yes, they wrote the decrease wrong/weird
I also am a very tight crocheter
I find it interesting you had enough of the purple since you did extra stitches and added an extra round, but barely had enough of the pink
That hook is weird -- how are you supposed to be able to tell which portion of it gives you the right gauge? That could contribute to people running out of yarn too early
Oh and the price -- just bc other kits charge astronomically more doesn't mean the price for this one was good, considering there was issues with most of the materials in it (especially that crazy awful yarn)
Just a weird kit all around. Guess they care more about money than the actual product/customer's satisfaction
It’s called a Boppy pillow. It is life changing!
He looks cute on screen.
crochet hooks are soooo particular. Hooks that I love others have hated and vice-versa. So don't hold that against yourself.
I am learning how to crochet just to make this stupid kit for my amazing girlfriend because its cute and i know that she'll love it she loves dinosaurs but I've never crocheted before and i feel like this kit is gonna make me have a stroke 😭😂
Oh my goodness you’re braver than me. I can’t imagine this being your first go at crochet.
I have bought a few of these for a friend. The pattern is wonderful but the hook and yarn are questionable.
For my first amigurumi kit I had to use my yarn because the yarn that they gave me was so bad.
I'm a beginner and I bought cotton yarn from Walmart to practice, and it's the worse type of yarn I've used so far
I’m just starting amigurumi and had to pass on that kit. Way too much price wise and I have p.l.e.n.t.y of yarn and free videos.😁❤
Yeah I just keep trying these kits so people don’t have to lol. But in general I feel like there are so many great free resources out there!
It's cute
I’m glad someone thinks so 🤭
I also think writing a decrease like that is kinda weird
