No way you called Emma hermione 😭
She will always and forever be Hermione to us :|
As a lighting artist I find myself solving technical problems 99% of the time instead of being creative. Though I feel like my studios workflow is out of whack.
BTW, one of my favorite jokes from lighting was when our DMX instructor told us about a DoP she'd worked with who asked her to "make it more ethereal" during production. We made fun of that for the rest of the course. :)
I just finished a six-month course on VFX compositing in August, and found that I enjoyed compositing quite a bit more than I expected to. Now I'm trying to get my foot in the door... into an industry that is still in turmoil from the fallout from the strikes and AI and everything else that's been hamming the film industry lately. Hoping to use my photography, cinematography, and Houdini/Solaris experience to help with that first foot in the door part of things.
As a compositor, I'm very upset you uploaded this video only in RGB, what do you want me to do with this !?
Extract an alpha with a key or roto what you need obviously!!
@@crafthive are you crazy ?! It would take me literally MINUTES!

i love the vid bruh 👍🏿👌🏿
Lighting is always overlooked
Being an aspiring VFX artist with a lot of experience in real-world lighting from indie cinematography and photography, this is a career that interests me. Especially since I also have some formal training as a composition and a lot of experience programming, because I was working as a software engineer while doing cinematography on the side since indie work doesn't pay the bills :) How critical is any particular renderer to know? I'm mostly rendering with Karma these days because it's fast, beautiful, and included with the Houdini Indie license, but in school we had four days in Nuke for compositing and one day in Maya with Arnold for lighting. We also got an introduction to Katana in the lighting portion, but I generally use Solaris, partly due to Karma being a lot faster than Arnold and not available in Katana :) Thanks for this explainer!
The skills learned are fairly transferable from renderer to renderer but it does help. Solaris is fairly in demand these days so that's good, but Karma isn't often used as a renderer in production, so it's helpful to know at least one of the others like Arnold or Renderman
@@crafthive In that case, I'm glad that I took the time to learn Solaris! I suppose I'll have to install some educational licenses for familiarization purposes then, at least until my budget allows for some license purchases.
This feels useful for a lot of different creative needs, I am working on a comic book and all of this is relevant. Great video! 👍
so creative
What an incredible breakdown, you have an extremely powerful set of skills! Great work.
What was that space creature movie in the beginning of this video? Or was it a game cinematic?

do you have a link or a vid on how to do polycuts?
I don't really, but basically all you have to do it select the object and type `polyCut` in the `MEL` field at the bottom of your screen. Then in the attribute editor select the `polyCut1` tab and play with the `Cut Plane Center`. You can select `Delete Faces` to delete the other half where it's cut.
Bro ur thumbnail 😅 i worked on that shot ❤
I think that it would've been okay if they diverged a bit from the cartoon design but the thing which threw me off were 1) The structure of the dress- it was waaay too modern with those geometric straight silhouettes of the layers and sleeves 2) The fabric- the fabric was too flowy and the color was too yellow rather than gold and due to this it was looking cheap 3) the shape- The dress was not big and poofy enough 4) the makeup and hair- the hair and makeup were too simple,it was like the everyday belle just let her hair open and wore a prom dress
This video is about capitalism and government corruption.
No
people don't remember bad practical effects and don't notice good cgi.
This is so insightful, thanks for the in depth analysis of the problems in the industry.
Great!
Very interesting! Just a question, why didn't you do the clothes in Houdini ?
Thanks! I simulated the clothes in Houdini, but I wouldn't want to model anything in Houdini really.. it's great at procedural modeling, but not so good at traditional box modeling, which is what you would want to do for clothes. And Marvelous Designer is the best tool to model most clothes.
this was so much fun to watch!! you are a true CG Generalist
Hello, Thanks for the video. Alright if I ask you something? I been using all the other programs and got interested in Houdini especially with the dynamics that always got praised over the years in background. I keep hearing people going on about how different and difficult modelling and animation is in it and was wondering why ?
It's built for proceduralism. So when it comes to modeling, it excels at procedural modeling, but lacks some of the tools needed to box model the same way you would in Maya or Blender. It definitely feels more natural to box model in Maya or Blender than Houdini. Animation tools were always just lagging behind in houdini as they haven't really pushed Rigging and Animation tools until recently. But that seems to be changing. Rigging has gotten much better since they introduced KineFX and their latest release has some nice animation tools. So we'll see what comes out of that over the next few years.
"We never thought about what was wrong with a shot. We just thought about how to make it better" is a great line to encourage creativity!
Hello, does anyone here have a job as a VFX artist or game developer? Did you guys finish college with a fine art degree, multimedia art degree, or program that is connected to your job field? (VFX artist/game developer) I'm in college now, but I chose the entrepreneurship course because this is what is available at the university. My questions are: Does the company in that field really rely on what degree you have? Can I become a VFX artist or game developer even though I have different finished programs? ( Entrepreneurship)
I do have a degree, and I do work in the industry, but you can absolutely work in the industry without any degree. All that matters is your portfolio. Although that may not be true for video game developers on the programming side of things.
It's not worth it. The film industry has nothing but contempt for vfx
Hey, what softwares do you use to edit your videos
Hey, I generally edit in Premiere..for now
@@crafthive nice, videos are very well made!
VFX isn't going away and it's worth it if you're actually really good at it. The actual problem is that if you're new you need work really hard to meet the right people. I get all my work from people who have already worked with me and I was able to leave a good impression with them. I don't interview with strangers. I don't deal with recruiters on LinkedIn. You have to get to this position of credibility to survive. It's hard, but if you have the appropriate skills you can do it. You need to guard your reputation as if it's the most important thing in the universe. One huge tip I can give newcomers is that productions have a lot of moving parts, and just because you hear about one or actually get an offer to work on one, doesn't mean you won't be waiting up to 6 months for it to actually start. It always takes forever for a new production to start. So your options are limited to waiting for something to start or dealing with the chaos of getting up to speed on a production that has already begun. The latter is typically horrible for a few weeks. Especially if you know a better way for doing certain things and have to dismantle a production pipeline to get it right. Don't shy away from doing that though. That is what builds the reputation that is required to do well.
How did you create the volumetrics in Houdini Solaris?
Hey! I was using Arnold here, so I created a cube in SOPs that covered up my entire scene, generated a VDB out of it. Wrote out the VDB, then loaded it into solaris with a volume node. From there I used spot lights with gobo filters of animated caustic lights to create the animate underwater caustic god rays. If you're using Karma, there's a 'Karma Fog Box' node that should get you most of the way there. Hope that helps!
I agree on pretty much everything expect the AI point. I think the pace at which LLM's and other AI tools improvement is insane, and the new AI cluster training for most of them is getting exponentially larger. 10 years ago, AI wasn't really even a real thing, and now each year it 3X's in improvement. People being worried about job security and being replaced is a real issue, as you should tackle the problem head on, not after its happened.
That’s so amazing and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your progress!
I left this shitty industry 5 years ago. I'm glad I did. Very happy now!!!!
