Gemima London
Добавлен 20 апр 2015
Hi, after working as a designer for over 3 decades I am now enjoying creating my own bespoke wardrobe. This is alongside running my small online business. I share my making projects and visits to places that interest and inspire me.
About me:
I was born and brought up in South Wales, UK. I trained as a Fashion designer with a degree in Fashion Design and during my career in the fashion industry I designed for many international stores and brands. In the early 2010's I "retired" from the Fashion Industry and founded "Gemima London" - a small business that focuses around Liberty Print haberdashery and accessories (you can visit my online stores with the links below). Today we not only sell online but sell a range of other Liberty Print products into independent retailers and have sold to Liberty and have a range in the "William Morris Gallery", London.
I live in leafy East London with my Husband, Son and Bella (our cat).

Oh if only! I don't know how anyone could decide what to buy.
You have just shown me my next holiday I have always wanted to go to Greece.
Absolutely gorgeous scenery and beautiful makes, thank u for taking me back to Greece!
Lovely vlog, your holiday makes are beautiful. Brought back happy memories of a couple of our sailing holidays, stopping at some of your moorings ❤❤
Beautiful scenes, makes, and model :) Especially love the floral vogue!
Really enjoyed that video on a cold, rainy July day in the northeast of England 😂, lovely makes , inspiring .
A lovely video - great sewing makes too!
Gorgeous. Was jealous until you hit the weather! 😊
Long time since I went through Liberty, nice to re visit.
Lovely makes and pattern choices. I will probably come back to reference it later.
Fabulous! Thank you so much!❤
A Wisconsin USA gal coming to the Birmingham international quilt show in August, loved your virtual visit and looking forward to my visit and viewing Liberty fabrics in person.
Thank you! enjoy your real life visit to Liberty and the Quilt Show!
From Ang I used to be able to get some fans lawn from Chorley market.had a lovely summer suit made. Still miss that suit. Aprox35 yes ago!!!!!!!
Chorley market, not what it used to be thanks to the council, bury market is the best worth a visit
I just found you channel and I love it. I will be traveling to London (from NYC) the last week in August. Are there any sewing related events, meetups, etc. during that time? Any suggestions on must see places a sewist must see while traveling to London? Thanks!!
Hi, I have a couple of videos of my Fabric hauls which are in London - Walthamstow and Central London. If you are visiting Liberty you may also like to visit Joel and Son as well as Berwick Street (where there are a couple of fabric shops), Goldhawk Road in West London is full of fabric shops (I also have a video on this), there is a fantastic haberdashery shop in Poland Street called MacCullloch and Wallis too, I hope you enjoy your trip! Happy holidays, to you. Enjoy.
Thank you !
Love Liberty’s tana lawn cotton, such a pleasure to work with. Thank you for taking us to Liberty 😊
Thank you!
This felt like being on holiday ❤ thank you
Thanks Yvonne!
Beautiful "Pattern Candy", thank you for bringing us along to Liberty!
thanks Brona!
Thanks for the tour, Liberty is my favourite place to visit whenever I'm in London. Tana Lawn is so lovely to sew with and is worth every penny. I repurposed an old make recently and made a new top since the fabric doesn't fade wear or wrinkle. It also washes like a dream in the machine and dries beautifully on the line. I save all my scraps to make bias binding for my tops/tees. The Grainline Willow or Scout is perfect for Tana Lawn as is Helen's Closet Ashton with sleeves. I am building up my skills to shirts with buttons and my world will explode if I succeed. Have a wonderful vacation and looking forward to trip video.
Thank you Sandra, good luck with the shirts x
Beautiful collection. Hope you have a great holiday. 😊
Thanks Debbie!
Such an informative and interesting vlog again, Rachel, thanks so much! ❤ What’s not to love at Liberty’s… I loved your chosen fabric, also the actual collection on the whole looks stunning. Have a lovely holiday, look forward to your next vlog! ☀️☀️☀️
Thanks Anna! yes it's a lovely collection x
I love your Liberty vlogs. The fabrics are like paintings with more details revealing themselves the longer they’re studied. Your commentary is interesting as well. Wishing you a wonderful holiday 🌴
Thank you Brenda, yes they are very painterly!
It felt like I was walking with you through the Library store. Than you for taking me there ❤
Thank you Tatyana, I am glad you enjoyed it!
I was too young to remember Biba but remember the Bus Stop shop we had in Edinburgh. The style was similar to Biba.
I loved Bus Stop in London, very similar to Biba
It will be hard to choose with all those great suggestions, what a clever way to invite inspiration. Looking forward to seeing all your makes, enjoy your holiday.
Loved the clothes from Biba. I was in my early teens in those days. Couldn’t afford to buy any but with my mums help could make my own clothes. Magic time to grow up.
Some great suggestions there - the Zadie is my all time favourite pattern, I think I have 8 now and they work for so many occasions!
Thanks Sarah, I will definitely be making the Zadie, it looks so versatile!
Love your choices, looking forward to the reveals :)
Thank you!
Binge watching your vlogs just superb !😊
Hi Mary, thank you so much 😊
I'm really enjoying these videos and looking forward to seeing your makes from the fabrics. Learning new things and getting inspired to go through my own stash and start sewing again. Have a great holiday!
thanks Ronda!
Great pairings 😊
Thanks Debbie! 😊
Very pleased you took on board a lot of my suggestions - looking forward to see these lovely fabrics made up Ruth xx
Hi Ruth, thanks for the ideas!
So many great suggestions. I can hardly wait to see what you’ve made. I love seeing me-mades on holiday…beautiful makes with gorgeous scenery.
Thanks Brenda, I'm trying to get some pieces finished in time to take!
Recently discovered your channel, love your videos. Looking forward to seeing more. Thanks
Thanks Claire!
Hi, my suggestion would be the Ludo Capelet by Maven Patterns for the upholstery type fabric? I've also made the Nova by papercut in a similar weight fabric. Looking forward to seeing your ideas! I'm off to walthamstow market myself today, so hope I'm as lucky as you!
Hi Rachael, thanks I love the Ludo Capelet, hope you enjoyed your visit to Walthamstow, I was there yesterday too, I found a lovely stripe viscose.
Would like to see the green jungle in a sleeveless palazzo jumpsuit :)
When I saw the "Indigo, gold and ivory", I thought of a straight, long skirt. Would the brown swirl and purple fabric be suitable for a coat, like the Burda pattern you showed? As a teenager (decades ago) I used to make shirts from Habitat curtain fabrics. The downside was the fading when I washed them, curtain fabrics weren't meant for regular washing. Thank you for showing some of your stash, it's always fun to see what other people have. Have fun, Diane
Thanks Diane, I remember making alot of clothes from curtain fabrics when I was younger too!
Love the great vintage Burda
Thanks Deborah!
For the wax prints, I made a Style Arc Hope dress in a wax print and I love it. A maxi length shift would be great too. Really anything without a lot of seam lines to keep the print intact. For the stripe fabrics, Paper Theory Olya shirt.
Hi Nancy, thanks for those ideas, I love the Hope dress!
Fun video! Here’s what popped up in my thoughts - 1) indigo jacquard - due to the weight of the fabric, a simple cropped jacket that would let the design shine & a bag/purse with the leftovers; 2) orange beaded satin - a kimono wrap would look stunning over a black outfit; 3) green ochre wax print - a simple summer shift dress & a waist coat with the leftovers; 4) charcoal spot jersey - would be fabulous in a DVF wrap dress. I love the wax print bag you made - wonderful fabric choices!
Thanks Kate, great ideas!
I think the beaded fabric would make a stunning long wrap skirt. The large prints, maybe long coats, dusters style coats, long straight shift dresses. That first 50's style fabric would make amazing palazzo pants.
Hi Jennett, thank you, I think a duster coat in one of the large scale prints would be great!
I'm also wondering what to do with the large prints I am so attracted to. Recently I sewed up the new Cora top by Tessuti. It has a centre seam on the front and was problematic with the large print I chose. I decided to go for it and finished the centre seam with a ribbon sewn down from top to bottom. Turned out great! No real suggestions for your fabric as I'm a pretty new sewer but I'm wondering if you could use some of the larger motifs for appliqué??? Perhaps on a jacket or overshirt?? I like the idea of that striped fabric for pants with the plain orange for a top. Now what to do with all these large prints I have....
Hi Sandra, the Cora top is a great shape, love the idea of using the large motifs as applique!
I think that circles heavy fabric would work really well as a cocoon-style jacket like the Nova or that Maison Fauve open jacket. The wax prints would make a lovely 50s-style dress, with a fitted bodice and a flared skirt.
Thanks Eileen, definitley think that Maison Fauve jacket would look great in the circles!
Love your fabric where did you get you indigo fabric and the £2 per meter? I have made a vogue wide leg jumpsuit and skort, jacket with bag with my wax fabrics.
Hi Denise, the indigo fabric is from Walthamstow Market and the £2/m fabrics are too, it's an amazing source for fabrics, I have a video all about it!
Thank you. Walthamstow is one of my favourite places. Also, dream fabrics online and Facebook. Have a blessed day.
Those fabrics are gorgeous. The beaded fabric I would make a top. It wont be comfortable to sit on beads.
Hi Tracy, yes! good point I hadn't thought of that! I think it's destined to become a simple cami.
Jungle print green - palazzo pants Beaded satin print - wrap shawl Orange viscose crepe - a fitted jacket over the poly crepe stripe in a fuller bias cut skirt Irregular polka dot cream voile - blouse with a tie bow at the neckline Black and cream stripe and the zebra stripe - possibly use both fabrics in one outfit - top in zebra and bottom in stripe or block print shell combining the two??
Thank you so much! those are great ideas, I will be making a follow up video!
Would love to see the beaded fabric in a kimono jacket
I agree. Something really simple like the SOI Sylvia Robe would let that beautiful fabric do all the talking.
Hi Carmen, yes I agree but I don't think I have enough!
Sorry - more suggestions! Zebra print definitely a jersey maxi - what about new look k6650? The snake print an oversized shirt or a duster jacket - looking forward to seeing what you actually make!
Hi Ruth, thank you so much for all your suggestions, I love the idea of the zebra print as a maxi!
Orange plain viscose - zadie jumpsuit, beaded fabric- scarf or shawl, you would want to minimise washing, indigo/gold/ivory fabric - peppermint magazine robe pattern, green leafy print - a trousers and top coord set, african wax - shift dress or quilted collarless jacket
I am really glad you enjoyed the Burda Magazines.I was thinking about your fabrics and the sort of things you like.Sistermag patterns may be a good source of inspiration .I have made the very full blouse with the yoke,no.64 4 and it came out really well. They have a very modern but paired down sort of vibe and I don't think I have seen any patterns like them.
Hi Sally, thank you so much for sending them, I have just taken a quick look at Sistermag patterns and they are fab! I haven't seen them before, they are really contemporary but very wearable! x
Nice to have a snapshot of what’s in fashion
