TV comedy and drama has always fascinated me, so join me as I delve in to the history of the shows and the people who have been responsible for some of the most ionic, and even rarely seen shows and series.
I studied drama and provided technical services to schools, drama societies and theatres in a semi-professional capacity, while working fulltime in IT.

The story of “Last of the Summer Wine” | Summer Wine Decanted
Merry xmas 24, as ive been watching all my xmas summer wine, only watch at xmas, so beautiful...like cleggy said we have our own world...😊
Thank you. Merry Christmas! Perfect for Christmas viewing.
Bloody brilliant.
Hi Sol! Thanks! 🎄
One of my favourite Brit sitcoms! Love the beautiful countryside scenes in this show, the music and of course, the excellent actors: Each one of the trio, not to mention Nora, Ivy and Sid, among many others. Slow paced and even relaxing to watch, and many today will say it's outdated, but this show is a priceless classic.
Hi Sandra! Many people would benefit from a slower pace! If only people realised how most of the stories are just as funny regardless of how old they are, its timeless not outdated.🙂
@@upstagedbyadog Absolutely!
I remember listening to Alan J.W. Bell in the 30 Years of Last of the Summer Wine documentary in 2003 explain how some shots of Bill Owen as Compo in series 21 that were completed in the spring of 1999 had been electronically inserted into some of the episodes. It is hard to tell which shots were electronically inserted in series 21. Bell also explained that he was forced to take liberties with the script by putting in body doubles.
Hi Matthew, Bill was digitally added to some scenes in 'First Post and Pigeon' as well as using a double, but I think the series 21 episodes used his 'double' - in the distance or when he's not facing the camera. It's a credit to Alan and the crew that they managed to salvage the episodes, and manage to give Bill, and Compo, a fitting finale.
@@upstagedbyadog Last Post and Pigeon the millennium special was called. The double was used where he smuggles Billy Hardcastle's pigeon Gladys into the hotel.
@@upstagedbyadog Compo’s double was seen in some shots especially in interior scenes that were done in the studio such as Ivy’s Café (lipstick and other problems) and Norman Clegg’s House (Under the Rug). A soundalike was also heard in Under the Rug saying “it’s me Thursday.” I think the soundalike was Enn Reitel.
When I originally watched Happy Camping and the Rights of Man ( Except for Howard) In series 31, I remember saying at the time, “I thought Peter and Frank were supposed to be seen indoors due to the high cost of insuring someone over the age of 80.” The green screen technology does look very convincing in this picture at 10:06 and not at all artificial.
If you're not looking for it, I think most people wouldn't notice! What helps "sell" the greenscreen is the genuine location wide shot with the doubles in the distance, so you're not expecting any trickery! There was quite a bit of greenscreen in some of the later series to "enhance" action and special effects.
@@upstagedbyadog Yes, such as when the trio are in Wesley's Land Rover or Thora Hird’s Edie is seen driving her car facing the front.
@MatthewHadley-f9z Some of the driving shots are real, either with cameras mounted on the Land Rover or with Edie's car on a process trailer, but that takes more time and effort (and money!) than putting a greenscreen behind a vehicle!
Excellent video 😊👍
Thanks! 🍻
Thanks for sharing, excellent video 😊👍
Thank you Allan! ⛄🎄
Hi Leigh I noticed nice jazz plays when Marina appears same Jazz plays a few times when Marina appears nice that
Many characters have leitmotifs, but I had not noticed one for Marina, I'll pay more attention next time I watch!
Hi Leigh the episode is Deviations with Davenport as Marina gets off the spinning chair nice jazz plays
The last scene in the Last Post and Pigeon episode where Compo plays the Last Post on his bugle I have genuinely cried at whenever I watch it. I remember receiving an email from Tony Philpott, who used to be Summer Wine’s music recordist. He told me that when the music was recorded for the last scene, Ronnie Hazlehurst and his session players were all tears.
I think that scene, and the "See Ya Compo" hill get most people. We did the shots by the hill and outside the undertakers in second take, I wouldn't have kept it together for a third.
Loving the Trivia in this video, Leigh. It was Production Buyer Colin Harris who stood in for Brian Wilde as Foggy Dewhurst for the character’s final appearance in “There Goes the Groom.”. Colin does receive an on-screen credit as Foggy at the end, which is something of a rarity.
Thanks Matthew. I thought I'd mentioned that, but that detail might have vanished in a re-write or edit! Quite often the other stand-ins / doubles do get a credit, but only for being a supporting character like 'shop keeper'!
I remember in the series 15 episode “The Black Widow,” after Mrs. Jack Attercliffe wrongly chooses Foggy instead of Smiler to dance in the dance hall for the over-60's, you can see it is not Brian Wilde but a double taking his place.
Well spotted, in the wide shot for a couple of seconds it's clearly not Brian, a terrible wig - or just messy hair! The only reason I can think is that the Brian had left before they realised they needed the wide shot!
@@upstagedbyadog Definitely a terrible wig that Brian’s double wears because the colour of the wig doesn't match his own hair colour-a bit of a let-down.
Hi I watched oh Howard we should get one of those and Barry picked up Clegg Compo Truelove all get in Barry car but as the car turns right there is no Compo or Truelove in the back I noticed
Well spotted, definitely as Barry pulls out in to the road outside Edie's you can see straight through both back windows and there's no one there!
Hey Leigh i liked Eli even though he got small parts but was very funny when he oh it’s you is it 🤣 it’s like he does know them but bad eyes lol 🤣oh it’s you is it 🤣
Eli was supposed to be long-sighted, in one episode he was cycling along way in the distance and called out, but when he got close by he couldn't see who was who!
Really enjoying your informative videos. Thank you for taking the time. ❤
Thank you, "Bass"! Lots more videos planned...
Hey Leigh when watched beware of the dog at the end of the episode it looked very overcast
Yes, they were probably just about to get rain!
Hey Leigh I watched Edie and the automobile today absolute classic funny episode and the look on Wesley face in the Cafe after Edie drive test lol 😆
Sid is my favourite character
He deserves a prize for living with Ivy!
Always enjoy your takes on LOTSW . As someone who constantly moved areas after leaving home, its such an idyllic but strange dream to spend ones whole life in one area and know your school friends until death.
Thanks Nathan. I have not moved often, but it's always a pain, and you always loose touch with people.
In which episode did The Butcher's Arms make it's final appearance in the series?
The last exterior scene was S28 ep9 "Howard Remembers Where He Left His Bicycle Pump". The last interior was probably S30 ep 8 "In Which Romance Springs A Leak", although it could have been S31 ep5 "Look Whose Wheel's Come Off" which resembles the Butchers Arms, but couldn't verify it, just from what is on screen.
@@upstagedbyadog I've checked the episode from Series 31, and on one of the shots, it reads The Royal Oak on one of the chalk-board signs in the background. It's very likey to be The Royal Oak in Upperthong that appears in this episode.
@@imafilmbuff You're likely correct. The pub interiors did not always match the exteriors. The Royal Oak exterior was used a few times in early episodes, but the interior was never seen. The Butchers Arms looks very different viewed from certain parts of the pub, being split in two, as it was originally two buildings, and did substitute for the interior of other pubs a few times.
Hey Leigh yesterday I watched the art of the shorts story and I agree it was odd seeing Glenda stand at Wesley car and was with Barry to
It's likely she thought she was out of shot and no one realised that she was standing there!
Always full of great information its a shame that most of the characters have passed away
Thanks! We can still watch them on tv and DVDs, there's always something to enjoy!
To think he was a painter and decorator considering the mess he made of nora battys kitchen ceiling in one of the episodes .great video thankyou
Well spotted! Mind you - I bet his other customers didn't live near someone with their own Air Raid siren!
Thanks for your hard work and coverage of this wonderful series
Thanks! You're welcome
Another great video, one of my favourite series, miss it lot. Bill owen made many films
Bill made a lot of films, but it took a little tv series to make him a household name!

I never met any of them, but spending so much time in Holmfirth I feel I know them, and miss them!
Interesting Very Interesting
Thanks, Leon!
A wonderful parade of characters and favourite actors. Thank you.
You're welcome, Bazza!
Where is the Pennine Inn, the only one I've found is based Kirkby Stephen.
Hi filmbuff! It's practically the only pub we didn't mange to locate, despite trawling lots of pub-related web sites and forums of closed pubs!
And further to my comment, I always thought Wally was a good character to. But I did think the 'Christmas in Summer' Episode a bit bizzare
"A Merry Heatwave" did mean they could do a "Christmas" episode, that was obviously filmed in the summer!!
I really enjoyed the '2 part' Scarborough episodes
I'm a Millennial who impatiently scrolls through everything on RUclips, but your Summer Wine videos always make stop and sit and listen. Very calming pace, and love all the Summer Wine trivia.
Thanks! you should see all the chaos trying to make the videos!! (You can if you watch the "Bloopers" video!)
Hey Leigh when watched come in sunray major it was a mix weather that day September 1990 saw rain drops on. Clegg coat
Parts of the Sunray Major episode seems to have been filmed at quite different times - as they use two different Land Rovers for Wesley, presumably the original one was unavailable for the second shooting date.
The ladies' coffee hour was one of the best additions to the show, especially after Compo's death it gave solid continuity to the end. I loved Edie always rolling her eyes at Glenda's naivety even though it was probably Edie who'd wrapped her in cotton wool in the first place.
It gave the ladies opportunity to catch up on gossip - particularly useful for them to keep tabs on what the men were doing!
In Under The Rug Compo is in pub scenes were they filmed on location?
That is the White Horse location interior with its new wallpaper. Behind the bar you can see through the open door you can see lots of clutter in the next room. In a studio that would often be closed or even a door fixed in place. You also get a good view of the ceiling. Some studio sets do have a ceiling or partial ceiling, but they are usually avoided as they cause problems with lighting. Bill Owen was not in any studio scenes in series 21, the locations are always filmed first, so unavoidable changes on location can be reflected in the studio shots - e.g.: if it's raining on location, characters can enter the studio sets with wet raincoats on!
He would have French ancestry with the name Simmonite, in France Simonet
I did look at the origin; in the UK most of the Simmonites were in Yorkshire. The name was also popular in USA, but the first in the UK was a 'Simeon of Warwick' in about 1280 - which would fit with it originally being a 'Simonet'!
Brilliant series. Lots of information. A pleasure to yo watch
Thank you Roger, glad you enjoyed it!
@@upstagedbyadog yes been watching it today. Think I've just got pub one to watch. Thank you for taking the time to make the videos
Bill was in the wartime movie about the RAF, "Way to the Stars" - famous for the poem "Johnny in the Air." He was listed as Bill Rowbotham.
Hi Jake, the film was re-titled "Johnny in the Clouds", despite still using the "stars" motif in the credits. He changed his name a few years later.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos, so well made.👌👌👌
Thank You, 70s Boy!
Thank you for sharing this with us i hope they show the last of the summer wine from the beginning again
Hi Gwen. In the UK you can see "Summer Wine" on 'Gold' every weekday, and often on @Drama" too...

I had a 13/60 saloon when I lived in Huddersfield 1979 to 1981. Wish I had plastic valances!

Hi Leigh Compo reminded me off Onslow from keeping up appearances both scruffy and both liked beer to clever Roy Clarke
Both were work-shy, but at least Onslow and Daisy stayed together, and there are no mystery children!
Hello my name is Paul Butler I don't know the way to get in contact today I left some feedback to the BBC iPlayer and itvx asking if they could put every episode of first of the Summer Wine and Last of the Summer Wine on their services I do think it's a good idea for the younger generation you have a much date yet to get into Last of the Summer Wine and first of the Summer Wine I have watched some episodes on UK Gold but what I don't like is the adverts it makes me have to get the DVD out and watch it straight through again because I have a premium ascription on ITV X which cut out the advert and doesn't in charge more enjoyments or shows so that's why I decided to send ITV X and BBC iPlayer a request to put these shows on their services I hope you like what I've done I just thought you might like to know and on your channel you may be able to float the idea out for people to get behind and then these companies may put them on then why everybody to watch again because lots of someone is query funny my favorite is Clegg, Combo, Noah Batty & ivy I would just like people who haven't seen yet got the DVDs or ever seen it before get the chance to watch it because I know the younger generation would enjoy this funny BBC show it was just a great show to watch and a lot of fun for all the family so I hope the BBC iPlayer and ITV X put it on their services thank you very much for reading my message I just wanted to let you know what I have done enjoy and keep the show alive with younger viewers and people who just would like to watch it again thanks thanks for your channel to it's been wonderful watching your channel on RUclips I really enjoyed them thanks and hope you make more
