He was completely and masterfully Compo. Could see no other actor in his role. Seemed to be written for him. A joy to watch. Didn’t know he was into music. Talented guy.
Bill Owen is my favourite character in this series. But the series would be nothing without the infamous trio. I was so sorry when Bill died. He added a special flavour to the trio. Naughty, rambunctious and commonly lovable. R.I.P. Bill and Peter
The "exit" of Compo was probably the best story arc for a character passing that I have ever seen. The whole series was quite charming, tho I seem to be one of the very few Americans who will admit to even watching it. It made me think of my father's generation and I could almost imagine them as the gentlemen on various larks.
Not only was the Compo passing Trilogy wonderfully written, moving and still humorous, Roy Clarke had to write it quickly, and rewrite the subsequent episodes in the series as well.
Nice video Compo was so funny he loved Nora but wasn’t keen on her wrinkled stockings lol 😂 and he loved winding up Foggy it’s your round Foggy you sure 😂 🍺
Always enjoy your takes on LOTSW . As someone who constantly moved areas after leaving home, its such an idyllic but strange dream to spend ones whole life in one area and know your school friends until death.
I always wondered what "Compo" was short for! And Tom's 'associate' Mrs. Avery was a wonderful character, sort of a younger version of the stern, lumpy-women such as Nora and Ivy.
When Compo died Truly said that they were the only family he's got to we'll have to bury him. There was no word of his nieces and nephews. I suppose he had completely lost touch with him over the years.
Hi Donal, yes - if you watch the Trivia video for series 21 to 25, I mention this. At least ten relatives that we already knew of should still be alive. Theoretically, Clegg could have gone to Gordon's mother's house, as they met up there for Gordon's wedding. But we hadn't seen any of them since series 3, and some viewers definitely would not have seen (or remembered) those episodes! Of course, no one expected Compo's son to turn up!
very well illustrated every thing to a tee Compo never had any money even to buy a round of teas at ivy's cafe even though you see the eipisiodes time after time a reare bundle of laughts
@@shug831 As quite a bit of that episode was filmed at the Star, I'm guessing as they were staying in a Huddersfield hotel it made sense to use a pub in Huddersfield! But in "Summerwineland" everywhere is local!

Hi Sandra. Bill Owen was certainly central to the show, the eccentricities of the character made Compo many people's favourite. It's understandable that people felt that his death should have been the end of the series, but that would have meant the BBC abandoning the remaining scripts of the series, and about £1 million already spent on the unfinished 'Last Post and Pigeon' and series 21. Not forgetting that dozens of people would have been instantly out of work - many tv crew are self employed, so when there's no work, they're not paid. Bill Owen died on 12 July 1999 (Kathy Staff's birthday), 'Last Post...' was first broadcast on 2 Jan 2000. Series 21 aired from 2 April 2000. Parts of 'Last Post...' were rewritten and the ending was adapted as a tribute to Bill. People who wanted the show to end there could have stopped watching - there were still people that loved the show without Bill, so it went on for another ten years for them.
Am I imagining things or did they go to France in two separate episodes? Or was one episode a flashback? My favourite scene in France was when we see a Frenchman who dresses just like Compo 😂
@@Sawrattan Hi, the Trio visited France in the series 20 episode "Last Post and Pigeon" - where they saw the French "Compo". In the series 29 episode "It's Never Ten Years" Clegg and Truly reminisce about Compo, the show includes clips of several episodes, including "Last Post and Pigeon".
@upstagedbyadog ah that makes sense now thanks. Just thinking of that French compo scene and our Compo's reaction makes me laugh. I appreciate your replies and I'm aware I post many comments here so please don't feel compelled to reply to all of them fast!
I did look at the origin; in the UK most of the Simmonites were in Yorkshire. The name was also popular in USA, but the first in the UK was a 'Simeon of Warwick' in about 1280 - which would fit with it originally being a 'Simonet'!

I was not only so sorry, but cried like a baby. Even now, years later, I still cry when I watch the Trilogy.
Filming the "See Ya Compo" scene, and outside the funeral home, was difficult.

Another great video, one of my favourite series, miss it lot. Bill owen made many films
Bill made a lot of films, but it took a little tv series to make him a household name!
Compo.Clegg&Foggie were the best characters together on this show.
What a great series, thank you for all this information

Thanks Nathan. I have not moved often, but it's always a pain, and you always loose touch with people.
Well constructed as always
Thanks Alex!
What a lovely watch! Nothing like another upload from Upstaged by a Dog to warm this LOTSW addict’s heart…
Hi Leigh Compo reminded me off Onslow from keeping up appearances both scruffy and both liked beer to clever Roy Clarke
Both were work-shy, but at least Onslow and Daisy stayed together, and there are no mystery children!
Great video keep them coming thank you
Loving it👍👍👍👍thank you for this, loved summer wine, 🍻🍻🍻cheers from new🥝🥝🥝zealand 🍺🍺🍺
Glad I got to meet him in 1992
I always wondered what "Compo" was short for! And Tom's 'associate' Mrs. Avery was a wonderful character, sort of a younger version of the stern, lumpy-women such as Nora and Ivy.
I was sorry to see Mrs. Avery go.
Tom wasn't!!
It was a great nod to Compo that his son seemed to go for the same type of burly woman in Mrs Avery.
Bill was in the wartime movie about the RAF, "Way to the Stars" - famous for the poem "Johnny in the Air."
He was listed as Bill Rowbotham.
Hi Jake, the film was re-titled "Johnny in the Clouds", despite still using the "stars" motif in the credits. He changed his name a few years later.
Compo and Cleggy will always be together ❤️

I always thought Compi was so called because he smelled!
You could be forgiven for thinking that, after seeing his home!
I believe Bill also played the father in "Georgie Girl".
Yes, he was "Ted" in the 1966 film "Georgy Girl". Bill also played several different characters called "George" in various sitcoms!
I liked Paul luty as Malcom and Eric he was funny 👍

I'll think you'll find the unidentified man in going to Gordon's wedding is the person out of Emmerdale the actor Eric Pollard
Did you mean Julie's unidentified boyfriend? Eric Pollard is a character in Emmerdale, played by Chris Chittell.
