Nice video Leigh I liked Mrs Avery shame she left due to fall out with director i often watch Mrs Avery episodes i like her rivalry with Nora with there house work.
I know a lot of people did not like Mrs Avery. I think she would have made a good replacement for Nora, which Stella did in series 30 and 31. Stella's appearance was more organic, she was Nora's sister, but it would have been nice to have her in reserve to be able come back.
Thank you for this video - I've been watching and rewatching Summer Wine all my life and somehow never thought to watch a RUclips video about it. Really great effort into making this video with trivia.
1:11 I loved the whole subplot of Ros/Roz and the history of her estrangement from her sister Edie. I’m glad they didn’t just throw her into the series with no explanation of where she was for all those years. 10:56 Probably one of the most poignant episodes written after Bill’s death. For once, Norman was the center of attention. 13:22 one of the funniest subplots of the later years - Glenda and Marina advise each other how to dress. Maybe Edie’s shielding Glenda from “sordid” things like Howard-and-Marina resulted in her not treating Marina with disdain, like the other ladies did.
Of course Dora Bryan was no stranger to the morally ambiguous role, and her gleeful giggle remembering past dalliances had not changed since her early days in films! There needed to be a reason for us not knowing about Roz and this was an inventive and original device. I'm pleased Clegg got a couple of episodes mostly about him, considering that Peter Sallis would soon be taking a bit of a back seat in the show. Certainly Glenda was somewhat shielded from the subjects the older ladies considered inappropriate … and Marina does wear nice shoes!
I don't know if it was intentional but Ros/Roz to Edie reminds me of Rose to Hyacinth Bucket, the embarrassingly flirty sister. I loved how Edie always tried to keep Ros quiet in front of Glenda, reminds me of how my own parents used to hush my uncles/aunts when they gossiped in front of me.
The last scene in the Last Post and Pigeon episode where Compo plays the Last Post on his bugle I have genuinely cried at whenever I watch it. I remember receiving an email from Tony Philpott, who used to be Summer Wine’s music recordist. He told me that when the music was recorded for the last scene, Ronnie Hazlehurst and his session players were all tears.
I think that scene, and the "See Ya Compo" hill get most people. We did the shots by the hill and outside the undertakers in second take, I wouldn't have kept it together for a third.
Hey Leigh I watched when Edie and Roz was chatting that was sweet them two Edie says it’s furniture day Roz furniture day what’s that when it’s at home 🤣 Edie is the day I do the furniture 🤣
What is odd is, although Roz had many men-friends, she was brought up with the same values as Edie, and does look after her own home. Even when I was young (1960s) Monday was still washday!
Simply excellence Leigh 👏👏👏👏👏, will watch thy last post again this stormy evening, always makes one cry, cheers from new🥝🥝🥝zealand Leigh, and cheers all fellow winos 🍻🍻🍺🍺🍺🍺
I saw Wharmby street in an episode and thought it was a pretend street name as a tribute, surprised there for a moment to see it as a 'real' street name. The Goodbye Compo tribute was really moving when it was originally on, there must be many more tributes that I've missed. Really enjoying this, keep the coming, and enjoy a coffee.
great upload leigh my favorite seasons in the show were series 22-29(exc the episodes with audrey-i hate this episode as this one time character is center of attention) and boothroyd(another character i hated) it would have been interesting in the later seasons of the show what wesley's role would have been if gordon hadn't passed away but i think he would have had either more storylines with barry/glenda-after thora hird death or wesley would have joined the trio(when clegg role started to decrease)
Hi Tenielle, pleased you're enjoying the videos. I'm sure many people had little time for any number of the one-off characters, who were usually brought in as "disruptors" to "make" a story happen. I think it's just like everyone one has a least favourite chocolate in the Milk Tray selection! If Gordon Wharmby had still been in the show we would never have had Entwistle in series 24, who - really - was only there to provide transport. That would have been a shame, although I think Burt Kwouk was under used. It would certainly have meant that Barry and Glenda might have more to do, and you never know, they might have had time to give Wesley a grandchild!
Thora Hird is a bit underappreciated in this show , I think her character is one of the best.. always reminds me of my mum & nan with the fake posh voice 😂
I've been rewatching her earliest episodes and it's so funny seeing the origins of Hyacinth Bucket in her, like her constant accent changes, the way she tells her husband what to wear, and spoiling Seymour/Sheridan. I think they toned down that side of Edie later on, presumably to not confuse the two characters.
I remember listening to Alan J.W. Bell in the 30 Years of Last of the Summer Wine documentary in 2003 explain how some shots of Bill Owen as Compo in series 21 that were completed in the spring of 1999 had been electronically inserted into some of the episodes. It is hard to tell which shots were electronically inserted in series 21. Bell also explained that he was forced to take liberties with the script by putting in body doubles.
Hi Matthew, Bill was digitally added to some scenes in 'First Post and Pigeon' as well as using a double, but I think the series 21 episodes used his 'double' - in the distance or when he's not facing the camera. It's a credit to Alan and the crew that they managed to salvage the episodes, and manage to give Bill, and Compo, a fitting finale.
@@upstagedbyadog Last Post and Pigeon the millennium special was called. The double was used where he smuggles Billy Hardcastle's pigeon Gladys into the hotel.
@@upstagedbyadog Compo’s double was seen in some shots especially in interior scenes that were done in the studio such as Ivy’s Café (lipstick and other problems) and Norman Clegg’s House (Under the Rug). A soundalike was also heard in Under the Rug saying “it’s me Thursday.” I think the soundalike was Enn Reitel.
Thanks, great incite here into Compo's last few episodes. In some scenes the double was very evident like in the drinking scene in France with the landlord. I was thinking that it was Compo's double in the scene from Under the Rug there the Thursday's was introduced which would be used again in the Fallen Wellies trilogy.
Pleased you enjoyed the video, Donal. There are "give-aways" that a double is being used, mainly, hiding the actors face... which is what was done in those scenes.
My headcanon about Compo's still living relatives, Gordon, Chip and family, is that they moved away, probably emigrated to the places like the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
That is the White Horse location interior with its new wallpaper. Behind the bar you can see through the open door you can see lots of clutter in the next room. In a studio that would often be closed or even a door fixed in place. You also get a good view of the ceiling. Some studio sets do have a ceiling or partial ceiling, but they are usually avoided as they cause problems with lighting. Bill Owen was not in any studio scenes in series 21, the locations are always filmed first, so unavoidable changes on location can be reflected in the studio shots - e.g.: if it's raining on location, characters can enter the studio sets with wet raincoats on!
I'm sure I remember seeing the ladies practicing their cabaret number before going off to tragically surprise Compo, and I saw it on New Jersey public television (not sure what year). Perhaps it was at a later date that the lawyers put a stop to playing the song for copyright reason.
Hi Leigh when watched an apple a day near the end of the episode Pearl had dark glasses on in pub car park next time you watch it again see if you noticed to
Yes, right at the end - well spotted. I thought they might be reactive like mine - I usually try and remember to wear plain lenses on camera - but those were definitely different frames, too!
The Daily Mail article does not give any more info. The article was to promote a BBC3 comedy series called "Dead Boss". She says she had difficulty getting work: "I’d love to bury She Devil and be in EastEnders, Emmerdale or Coronation Street and have tried to get parts in them. But I’m told I’m still too famous for She Devil. Summer Wine was his last TV appearance, he worked continuously from 1953, mostly in tv, in comic and serious roles. He was frequently on Harry Hill's shows and The Basil Brush Show!
Hi Leigh I watched why is Barry at an angle and while the lads was with Barry at pub the pub lights was so bright where they sat it might be the studio lights to the white horse
I will have to re-watch that bit. They often light location interiors with a lot of studio lights shining through windows to give a realistic effect of daylight.
Hi Leigh just watched all of Florrie episode when the lads picked up Marina in Entwistle truck I noticed the driver was Entwistle stunt man not Entwistle I’m getting clever at noticing stunts 😀
The very brief view of "Entwistle" does not look like Burt! It is noticeable how they avoid showing the drivers side of the van cab throughout that scene!

The BBC have a huge library of their own sound effects, so you will hear familiar sounds. One that amuses me is a sound of a car stopping and the doors opening / closing (eg: in series 3 episode 1 of "The Good Life" The Early Birds) were not only frequently used on tv, but also included on a BBC Sound Effects vinyl record for free amateur use!

Even though she is advancing in years in later series, that is true to the character, and she still delivers with matriarchal authority!
