What Happens If You Boil a Tape-loop?
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.10 месяцев назад
You know the drill! We are going to record the same loop on 9 different tapes and then we'll put the tapes through different conditions (boil, freeze, rust etc) to see how it effects the loops sound! If you have any ideas for more tape loop experiments, leave a comment and we'll do a part 3! Big love everyone! thanks for watching as always! An Episode Of Our New Podcast "Something About Tapes"
Просмотров 29211 месяцев назад
We've been working on this new podcast, it's a cassette based comedy podcast. The premise is explained in the show, so I don't want to say too much here but; it's all about tapes and if you like our videos and our banter style... it's essentially the same thing but without the shaky camera work! We've just uploaded all episodes to a separate RUclips channel, so we thought we'd post one of our f...

Finnaly the tape boys have returned i love the vids
To clear the tapes, you can use an old tape demagnitizer like the ones sold by Radio Shack under the Realistic brand (they sold them from the 60's to the 90's).
@@Francois_L_7933 indeed, but if you live outside of USA or Japan; you're looking at a £80/£100 price tag 😵💫
electroplating? idk if the magnetic medium is conductive enough
well obviously microwave but i think it should be for like. 5 seconds. or until the first spark on the screws or some other hardware appears
less tiome actually do it for one second
Great video thanks y'all
Could you also just put the electric tape on the cassette directly to block the erasehead?
@SepiaOfficinalis-up5rl possibly, as long as the magnetic part is blocked you'll be good to go, be warned though you don't want any sticky parts touching the actual tape ribbon itself cus you'll never get it off 😅
Genuinely one of the best production vids and tape based videos iv ever seen. 10/10 lads.
@@fergisuzzz9190 thank you so much, glad to help!
That's what it's all about, having fun, looking forward to the next one. Thanks
I think ive found my tribe...lol
This was a great and educational watch! Using FL to make ambient jungle is WILD 😂
@@connorsol old habits die hard aha! ❤️
Briliant !!!Thnx a lot guys!!!!!
Cheers so much for doing this. Game changer.
WARM!!!! He said the word! Tbh ive been looking for the least painful way of making a tape echo. So it's good to know this stuff is being dealt with. I only have space for synths. Not a Hacking work shop. I have to say that tape loop sounds gorgeous. You guys should make those tape machines commercially.
@@rodnee2340 check out our etsy store 👌
Very cool. What recording speed do you recommend for lofi
Bros I need some help in one of your videos where you were showing your equipment you had a thing where you can connect into multiple aux cord TRS chords I'm experiencing signal loss with a 2 to 1 splitter so I'm concerned what do I need to do to run like 4 or 5 things that are all basically TRS stereo aux 3.5 does that plastic Star splitter thing work pretty decent I see those for sale but I wasn't sure if I was also going to experience other signal loss.
@@ShamanicSynthSounds yes indeed, the 2 to 1 splitters are mostly junk, spend a little extra on a good splitter and you won't get such a big signal loss. You could also go the extra and get a micro mixer like the "Bastl bestie"[$$$] or "little bear MC5"[$$] or even a "Behringer MX400"[$] but that one will require its own power 👀👌
@BatteryOperated all battery operated as of now I'm definitely going to try one of those Splitters because I almost have it all going. I'm glad I saw that in your guys's video
@BatteryOperated that bestie is cool af
@@ShamanicSynthSounds they are awesome, we have the previous version from Bastl called "the dude" but I don't think they make it anymore... it was battery powered micro mixer that served us many years though! 👌 highly recommended if you've got the caps to spend
You're from Oxford wicked! enjoyed the video.
Great video ! Happy to see you back !!
interesting. i’ve heard older cassette players are better quality, something refurbished would surely be better than a player built today
Well, that was far and away the best, most concise summary of tape usage in the modern age I've ever seen. My career as an ambient drone musician is now over. :P
Three minutes in, and already you guys are surpassing most DIY tape music making advice by far. Well done!
@@autaar thank you so much for the kind words! We are happy to help 😎👌
It's great to see a new video from you guys. It always looks so cold in your studio! How do you avoid sound on sound when making a gapless loop?
@@bill-sr1vd haha it probably seems cold because I'm one of them guys who just never takes their coat off... 😅 We avoid sound on sound by keeping an eye on where the recording started, if you can see the join where you stuck your tape loop together; that's the easiest bit to keep track of. Start your recording and keep your eye on one spot of the tape when the join passes by start playing 🎶, and when you seen the join pass by again, stop ✋️
Hey hello! So far the videos of you that I watched felt more like "two friends having fun together with inside jokes and stuff". Il liked that, but now, this is on another level, incredibly useful. Thank you so much!
@@stephpicher thanks for the kind words! We're stoked you like the content and we are beyond happy to help folks get started in their tape adventures 🙌
I purchased the micro dictadrone from you guys a few weeks ago. It's neat to me to record sounds made on the worlds most expensive music equipment with it and then turn around and use it. I mean, im recording solos from symphony Orchestras and slowing and chopping . It's just unique to own and use.
@@ShamanicSynthSounds yes! we find the micros give everything that incredibly old sound and so it's also fun to juxtapose that against modern music etc! Glad to hear you're having fun with it ❤️
11:06 erase head muting tip ❤
Have you guys heard of 10-turn potentiometers? They give very fine control. One disadvantage is they take ages to go from one end to another but a bypass switch would help for speed.
@@stevesm2010 yes, rotary pots! Probably too fine of movement in them for a tape player, would be helpful when tuning to a synth but a nightmare for the DnB jam 😆
25:29 this is what heaven sounds like
0:48 actually produce a song? I thought I’d gear heads were just meant to salivate over our tools, not make stuff 😅😅😅😅 I joke if course - looking forward to sitting down to watch this whole thing😊

Awesome stuff!
As a 50yr old dude with fond memories of riding my bike to my dishwashing job with my walkman-style tape deck jammin metal mix tapes and recording jam sessions with friends on models slightly larger, the irony of this video in 2024 is not lost on me. I must have owned ten different "Walkman" style tape players in my youth, but Im still young enough that, in my time they were all basically called, "Walkman"s" My favorite was a Seiko brand that my mom got me for Christmas one year, it took so much abuse and worked until the door fell off and I think I actually just lost it. Tapes are so nostalgic for me. It was all about the quality of headphone one used as to the listening experience though.
Waiting for mine in the mail now 🤘🏻
Ace work
Welcome back boys...missed you...👍 BTW - where do you get the antistatic plastic stuff? I'm using insulating tape over the erase head and it's not always successful...
@@n.k.turley2496 don't feel disheartened! it does take a bit of fiddling... we make it look like it works first time every time in this video 😅
Great video, although I don’t think I’ve got the patience to make my own tape loops. I think I’ll order one from you guys instead in the new year. 😊
Leave it out in the sun, drag it behind a skateboard, blanch it, put it in the dryer (no heat), put it in a dirty situation then use "tape cleaner," ribbon curling technique then respool, fold /crease it in a uniform pattern (every 1mm), mess it up first and then record it
All I want is this but with a high pass filter on it too, so I can run drones through throughout my performances (and I don’t wana use up a track on my Octatrack)
@@Tapepusher check out our Instagram... we have an upgraded version of this mod and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised 😅

Nice!
When's this gonna be available boys...? 👍
Very dope!! I like it a lot.
Please tell me you people have a samplepack or something. These really remind me of zero-G's "ghost of the machine"
We have lots of tapeloop samples on our patreon, £1 entry! we also have a sample pack available on etsy but it's more drums than tapeloops...
Dude really said "👶"
will the DictaDroneSLiDE-FM V3 be back in stock soon?
@@pfft9363 very soon, before the end of the month 👍
I recently learned that the darker colored tape is higher quality than the lighter brown/rust colored tape.
@@codelicious6590 chrome tape is better quality, however some older players don't play nice with non ferric tape! Also lets not forget that we are hunting for the Lo-Fi 😁👌
Thx very helpful.
Quality content
I like the content, but this video could have been cut down to 50% of this lenghts. Who wants to watch someone taking his time, amlost falls asleep while speeking.
Im looking for a shoebox style old tape recorder with stereo outs so I can monkey around with modding and bending in Stereo!! Everybody seems to think they have priceless artifacts on ebay with these old tape decks though.
