What Happens If You Put A Tape Loop In A Washing Machine...?

- This time we are going to record the same loop on 8 different tapes and then we'll put the tapes through different conditions (burn, freeze, wash etc) to see how it effects the loops sound!
If you have any ideas for more tape loop experiments leave a comment and we'll maybe do a part 2!
Big love everyone! thanks for watching as always!

Battery Operated is an experimental sound and art project with circuit-bending as the main focus. Inside a backyard workshop in a small town in England; we tinker away at any junk we can get our hands on, hoping to find an unintended use.
If you decide to follow us on any of our platforms expect to see:
Workshop Hangouts, Ambient Jam & other Jams, Tear-Downs, Tutorials, Repairs, Bootsale Hunting, Everything Circuit Bending, Sound-art, Vignettes and I'll stop now because we have too many ideas....

DROP YOUR SUGGESTIONS FOR MORE TAPE EXPERIMENTS BELOW!
like and share for ya boyz!
liquid nitrgen, fire extinguisher, acetone, white spirit, dye colour, food colouring, coffee, under heat lamp or uv light, laser light,
Put a tape in a sealed plastic bag, blow smoke into it, and bury the bag. It was a technique dub producers used often.
Hah hell yeah! Gunna bless up dem tapes! 😜
Something that might give results: microwave, satellite dish focus point, local high voltage transformer, power cables, maybe close to a plasma tv or definitely a crt tv. Also I think you shold get a more clear audio sample for better comparison
Awesome comment! Thanks for the suggestions 👌 yeah I think we are going to sacrifice a better sounding player next time, the one we used was already broken aha
Would be cool to see a video where you do, alternate weird treatments for printing noise on the tapes that are blank. Obviously, some kind of magnetism is required so repetitious magnetic ideas. For example. Take one of those drinks, stirring motorized sticks, and place a magnet glued to one side of the tip, and turn that little motor on, and put the tape somewhere in close proximity, and let the frequency of that magnet, spinning on the motor impact the tape. This is just something I think might work theoretically and if so, there’s probably a lot more ways to do interesting magnetic influence
Butter, oil pastel or wax crayon, chalk, honey, oregano, hot sauce, iron filings, spray mount glue, toothpaste, hot chocolate, algae, turmeric, carrot and coriander soup, cinnamon.
Also pigeon excrement would be interesting as it’s corrosive enough to rot pigeons feet
I used iso to clean mould off VHS tapes. Good experiment.
I liked crumple the most. There is a technique for restoring old damaged audio/video tapes. Oven baking at a certain temperature. Obviously not 200c. 😂
The air fryer temp destroyed the magnetism on the tape. Once you go beyond the threshold for extended period. Magnetism gone.
that was hilarious guys, had a good laugh when you got the microtape out of the washing machine :D
You guys are too funny!!! 😄😂🤣 The air fryer was my favourite bit. Maybe some kind of superglue experiment? Or drive a car or a truck over it a few times. Or put it in the sea for a while. Oh, and the tumble dryer… and…
Thanks for the kind words and suggestions! Definitely going to make a part 2 with everyone's ideas! 👌
Air fryer probably demagnetized the tape cuz heat. I'm more interested in what it would be like if the degraded tapes were as a delay (or w/e) to add a real-time write-read mod, instead of post-recording damage, to see what that is like?
Super cool guys!
Bleach. Vinegar. Perforations/holes. Loose items in the case (ball bearings, rice, something that will move with the tape). Nail varnish. No spools. Stretching by hand. Chopping and rearranging. Left in the sun (or more likely the rain in the UK lol). Magnet on random spots. Freeze into an ice cube and melt before playing. Swallow and rinse after it comes out the other end lmfao.
Awesome suggestions ahah, could make a whole vid from just these suggestions 😄 👌
@@BatteryOperated with the comments coming in, I'm definitely sensing a long run series 😁
Run a magnet across at different distances away....🤔
What a great job on such a wonderful tape loop!
I love the results you achieved with the Sticky Tape - just wonderful! This alone would be worth a deep dive - destroy several tapes to different degrees with Sticky Tape.
Again, excellent inspiration - thanks so much for this! :D
Excellent work lads! I've always wanted to stick a tape in with some pickeled cabbage and let it sorta turn into sauerkraut...
Please do more
Make a pickled tape! Buy some pickles, eat them, toss the tape into the jar for a week.
I think the hardest part of that is eating pickles 😩 ahah!
Definitely going to try pickle one!
Great stuff as ever. I'll definitely be using the sticky tape and crumpling. Nice idea having the hole in the one you put through the wash. It allows for OG flanging techniques.
Yeah crumpling was great 👍 definitely a valid technique!
We also sell a loop with a hole in the case on our etsy if you're interested 👌 The Wiggler
@Battery Operated hi, you guys make some great gear, I build my own, hack old stuff. But I only build for myself these days. I'll keep directing folk over to you guys and Metsaan studios.
Pritt stick and sugar😊
I wonder if shooting a heat gun/hair dryer at a tape while it's playing would change the sound at all
Microwave one or hide it in joes beard for a while 😊
Try damaging the tape before you record the loop in different ways
Good idea !💡 👏 didn't think of that 🤔
waterlog one for some days?
Was that 200° C? I'm surprised it wasn't worse off!
Yeah, suprised it didn't completely melt away ahah!
