I’m Alani Santamarina: author of BONESONG: Diary of a Sentient Sword and the children's picture book: A Place Where We All Belong. Look out for my upcoming novels: The Villain’s Reason and Novel Pursuits.
I think my descent began with a thought that has no doubt crossed the minds of many fans of Tolkien, Sir Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams, J. K Rowling, etc. etc. etc.
We read them and we think, “This is awesome. I want to make something this awesome.”
I mean, of course we’d think that. Authors brought us so much meaning, and laughs and stolen moments, hiding in the bathroom at one in the morning, that I wanted to be one of them. I wanted to create something that brought someone, anyone that same sort of joy, the same sort of escape from the limitations of reality that any of those authors gave to me.

"it didnt literally, physically enrage me" what a high-bar to clear lololol
I came out of it thinking that her decisions were actually the wrong ones, everyone just praises her for it. Wulf drew his sword on the King, Helm would have been within his rights to kill the kid, her asking for clemency allowed an enemy to go away and make trouble. She gets captured unnecessarily, she doesn't give a good reason to abandon Edoras and go to the Hornburg. With the information she gave Helm I could only see why he wanted to fight in the open. Cavalry against ill disciplined light infantry in the open plains around Edoras, yeah, I'd want to ride that down too. She also evacuates the city but doesn't send word to her father. Because of that he sends help back to the city when he didn't need to and his eldest son dies and younger is captured and then killed. Completely avoidable if she'd just informed the damn King. Helm also seemed to be doing a great job of attritting the besiegers until she investigates and gets him killed for no real reason. It was a pointless death that's all her fault. The enemy had a single siege tower which means a single breach point, something that's actually easier to defend against. It being flimsy and made of wood makes it easier to defend against. In fact they should have just set the thing on fire when it was near completion, clearly the enemy didn't have a picket guarding their camp as demonstrated by Helm. Her only good decision was asking her cousin to relieve the siege. Like I wrote, I don't know why she's praised and called right as almost every call she made gets other people killed or nearly killed. All that said, I still found it an enjoyable film and hope they make more but about stuff that has more lore written already. I'd rate the film 7.5/10
Since when is "boring" not a character flaw? For sure Hera is flawed: childish, naively self-centered, lacking imagination/foresight, undecided, lacking wisdom, lacking real empathy, lacking political instinct, makes very bad motivational speeches, hates dresses - while putting a deteriorated one to fight for no reason, flirts with her first cousin, lets poor Lief carry heavy loads on his own, gets her father killed... What she lack are real "problems" - as nothing appears to be a real "problem" for her, she seems detached from anything - even the death of her brothers, not flaws - flaws she has enough.
But Eowyn was never "anti-marriage", she only became suicidal after Aragorn rejected her advances...
Yhe beginning reminds me of the D brothers from Elden Ring, Twins but while one sleeps the other is awake though they are brothers both can never be awake or asleep at the same time. Yet they love snd protect each other dearly.
I liked it mate
Hey! Valid points (aka I agree) about the protagonist dude. I actually don't recall the narration such was it's mehness. I did have a spot in the film at approx. 50 minutes where I was yawning and hoping it was nearly over (I was tired so my bad). I am unsure what to say about Hera, she seemed ok to me besides feeding an Eagle (which was siiiiiilllyyyyy). I actually liked the ridiculousness of the Watcher eating the Oliphant, loved the cartooning, I lolled for joy. On the flip, the background / foreground caused me eye focussing problems that lead to disorientation and annoyance/pain. I have not watched much anime to comment further. Thank you for your comments!!
the "anime-ness" of it was nothing but a positive. They should of just had a better framerate at times
Lots of mythology references, the Minotaur with the horn, The refence to Anius at the end of Troy with the stringed instrument
I LOVED the narration. Miranda Otto felt really like a spiritual successor to Cate Blanchett!
but it has no real purpose, I do agree, only nostalgia, no real function beside it
I guess the term "Rey" has replaced "Mary Sue". The movie is probably an anime simply because it was cheaper and faster to produce in order to allow New Line to keep the adaptation rights.
Disclaimer: I have not seen the movie, just the spoiler reviews. Hera as a character could have worked better if she were captured at Edoras, and she would have had more of a Romeo and Juliet thing initially with Wulf. Only to choose her family in the end, opening the doors of Meduseld to Frealaf to get in with his band of desperate men, which ends in the death of Wulf and Hera both. Wulf could have been easily made more intimidating by letting him kill Haleth, the elder of the two princes. In the Appendices, Haleth falls while defending the doors of Meduseld, but it is not mentioned who killed him. Thus, the writers could have easily given it to Wulf, after giving Haleth some badass moments of glory, only to fall in single combat against Wulf. In turn, Wulf is killed by Frealaf, but this would be easy to explain still: Wulf has been just roused from bed by the surprise attack, and he likely has just witnessed Hera's death in the hands of vengeful Dunlendings, further unbalancing him emotionally. Thus, it can be explained how he dies against the armored and well-focused Frealaf. This of course means that Hera is not at Helm's Deep to steal Helm's crowning moment of awesome. While Helm didn't fight off a troll single-handed in the Appendices, he did, effectively, break the Dunlending resolve to press the siege. Thus, with the Dunlending army likely half-freezing to death in their tents, they were not at Edoras and then were routed by Frealaf with Rohirric and Gondorian forces. It would be possible to do this either in flashbacks, the Dunlending messangers recounting the horror villain that Helm had become in their collective imagination, or in an actual scene, Helm coming out of the darkness like a nightmare, leaving just bodies of Dunlendings behind, until he is seen standing like a statue on the Dike (the outer earthworks of Helm's Deep, not shown in the movie).
I should add... obviously cut the earlier scene with the oliphant and the Watcher in the Water completely, as well as Isengard.
the troll - even if nicely dawn, should not be there - the whole point of the story is that it was Helm who in his despair dehumanized into a monster - having a monster talking this aspect of him detracts from Helm's downfall's tragedy - of how low did his pride in his "pure Rohirric royal blood" take him
@@Chociewitka Although it would not be impossible that Helm could have resorted to cannibalism, the framing has it as a Dunlending tale rather than as an undeniable fact. He becomes the boogieman for the Dunlendings, and no doubt his name was used to scare naughty children into submission: "If you are naughty, Helm will some in the night and eat you!"
@@anarionelendili8961 do not deny that, but also there was never an actual snow troll in the story, the troll in the story was always Helm himself - and having a real troll there imho distracts from it
@@Chociewitka I agree with that. Also, even the whole snow troll thing was a reference to Helm sneaking in during the snowy nights and killing people barehanded. A comparison "stalk like a snow troll into their camps", rather than saying that the Dunlendings would have considered him to be a snow troll.
I respect that his ending in this was violently badass. Though there is something truly epic in the book death. He froze to death on his feet, after terrifying the enemy army every time the horn sounded. He was nearly a statue that all feared to approach.
yeah, but it was set up strange and stupidly 1. the door opening as it did into the walls was extremely atypical for the architecture - and we know there is a side door beside the entrance- Aragorn and Gimli used it, all the "skeptical knights" gathered in the Hornburg could have well made sortie to defend Helm... Even on a rope ladder from above the wall - if needed - in the book Helm is found frozen in the gap of the wall - far from the gate - so nobody saw him, not right in from of the gate where his people could have well defended him
@@Chociewitka 100% agree, his freezing right outside the gate was stupid as I can't see how the defenders wouldn't try to aid him or at least keep him warm.

I'd like to know what you think of the channels "Echoes of Ea" and "The Cottage of Lost Play"?! Both use Artificial Intelligence to create narratives based on Tolkien's universe. And the result is simply impressive. Visually, it rivals what Peter Jackson did in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It would be interesting if you reacted to some of these videos and gave your opinion.
You beat me to it! Silmarillion Animated channels rule!
"Tolkien Nerd Reviews Silmarillion Animated Channels" ?
WotR was a big occasion for me as the first movie I saw in a theater since COVID. It was, I think, inevitable that I would find it to be the best Tolkien adaptation since RotK, if only because it was the first one since then based on a complete, coherent Tolkien story of a scale and scope commensurate with that of a feature film. The one or two pages in LotR Appendix A that tell this story feel very much like a film treatment, and I knew as soon as I reread them when the movie was announced that the project was a good idea. WotR also comes closer to being a literally faithful adaptation than any previous Tolkien-based film or TV show. I hastily reread the Appendix A passage just before leaving the house for the movie, and while watching it I only noticed two major *contradictions* of Tolkien's narrative, as opposed to additions to it. Upon coming home and rereading Tolkien's story, I picked up on some more subtle changes, but the two I noticed in the movie theater remain the biggest ones, and they both feel like they emerged organically from the filmmakers figuring out how to structure the story as a film. It's true that the second and more significant of these changes is a result of the film's focus on Héra, and I can think of a better way they could have handled the scene in question, but, overall, this is an extremely faithful adaptation. The film certainly has flaws. As I believe is common with anime heroines, Héra's design and costuming are overly sexualized (I especially disliked one shot during an action scene with the camera repeatedly circling the standing Héra). Some of the dialogue is clunky and cliched, and the film's feminist messaging can be heavy-handed, with Héra standing in danger of viewers calling her a Mary Sue. As Alani mentioned, there are a few too many memberberries from the LotR films, although nothing I found unacceptably obtrusive. One scene not only severely strains credulity in itself but is painfully similar to a scene from RoP which, ironically, is more believable in that show's context than in this one, for reasons viewers who have seen both will understand. The similarity is likely coincidental, since Philippa Boyens has said, IIRC, that the film franchise's writers avoid watching RoP to avoid "cross-contamination". Unfortunately, the scene in question comes extremely early in RoP's run, so even viewers of WotR who lost interest in RoP and stopped watching early on will remember the scene. The single thing that bothered me most strongly in the film, however, even though it may seem like a small issue, is the Rohirrim's use of spyglasses, which pulled me completely out of the story. According to Wikipedia, the use of lenses dates back only as far as the 13th century, while telescopes first appeared around 1600. (A Brothers Hildebrandt illustration of a bespectacled Bilbo was controversial for precisely this reason.) AFAIK, Tolkien never mentioned the use of any kind of telescopic device in his legendarium. I can imagine the Elves or the Númenóreans inventing such a thing, and, indeed, an Elvish telescope appeared as part of the set dressing for Rivendell in the RotK film, although the Elves would not actually need telescopes given the acuteness of their eyesight, as repeatedly and accurately depicted in RoP. I can also imagine Saruman inventing a telescope, especially once he became the master of Isengard. The Rohirrim, however, IMO should not have spyglasses by any stretch of the imagination. With all due respect to the beauty and nobility of their civilization, a people who "write no books but sing many songs" would not be able to achieve such a technological advancement. Are we meant to suppose that the Gondorians retained the technology to make telescopes from Númenor, and that some of their telescopes ended up in Rohan? That's piling supposition upon supposition to make excuses for a plot element that's clearly there because the writers couldn't figure out how to make certain scenes work in a way that felt truer to Tolkien.
I'd like to know what you think of the channels "Echoes of Ea" and "The Cottage of Lost Play"?! Both use Artificial Intelligence to create narratives based on Tolkien's universe. And the result is simply impressive. It rivals what Peter Jackson did in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It would be interesting if you reacted to some of these videos and gave your opinion.
Never lower your standards. For you and I the movie is at most a couple hours entertainment. Fir those making it it is food, shelter, relevance, and survival. We hold the power. The power to stand and declare "you shall not pass." Use it.
A red haired, young woman with amazing fighting talents and who doesn’t want to get married… so this is Disney’s “Brave” again, isn’t it? If this is an okay-but-not-great animated movie, then, yeah, it is “Brave” without the Bear transformation.
I will pass on the non-Tolkien girl boss flick.
The most convincing explanation I've heard was for New Line Cinema to keep the rights to make more movies, because of how copyright works in a "if you don't use it you lose it" way. I liked it at certain times, though I did find some quality and dialogue dislikes sprinkled in there, plus a couple of minutes of questionable animation. Generally, it looked like a much lower quality production than ROP, yet it never reached the heights of questionable choices and ridiculous changes they did, so all in all a nice LOTR movie that entertained me for a couple of hours and rarely made me cringe, even though I was all ready to. I'll take it
It wasn't a copyright issue, so much as a licensing issue. The licensing agreement that the studio has for the IP is structured such that said studio must make a movie every so often with said IP, otherwise the licensing agreement lapses, and the studio can no longer use the IP.
@Mr.Milquetoast Yes licencing, exactly. My mistake, I didn't phrase it correctly, but that's what I mean. Thx
If only every other reviewer would be as honest and critical as you are about WOTR, then Middle-Eart's future might not look as grim as it does at the moment after the releases of ROP and this "animation". The bar has been set way too low than LOTR deserves... Listening to other rewievers it sounds like this is the first anime, animation and LOTR film they've seen...while WOTR it's just a mediocre attempt at animating Middle-Earth and Tolkien in the style of an anime, it doesn't have anything epic about it. Even the score, it's good ONLY because it recycles Howard Shore's epic composition. Complacency ruins perfection! One does not simply puts the LOTR on a film and expects it to be good solely by virtue of that badge...
'cut the girl out' - amen.
I loved this movie. It was basically perfect for me. The Bakshi reference in particular were much welcome.
That's how I described it too. It's not terrible, but it's not great. 6/10 My daughter also said it made her want to watch Princess Monenoke again.
Offt, you are my only trusted authority on quality storytelling. I have to admit to not being in the slight bit excited about this movie. I don't know if it is the animation or the storyline. The Rohirrim were not my favorite group of people in the LotR story. Their history doesn't excite me the way the history of the Edain or the Dúnedain or the Elves or the Dwarves do. That said I was hoping that Peter Jackson would at least tell a compelling story. Of course I'll see the film and then I will watch your spoiler review! 😁
The writing of this show makes me so tired. It’s almost good. It has pieces of good. It’s just so clear that they have no plan, they have no arcs, they’re winging it like the Star Wars sequels and we all know how THAT turned out. Imagine knowing you have a five season show and going in with NO PLAN. I’m so tired
Indeed. This puts into words precisely how I feel about it.
This film was made purely for license retention.
In summary, it sounds like it wasn't a travesty and it did have a coherent story. That's where the bar apparently is these days. I'll probably watch it, unlike season 2 of Rings of Power.
i find it interesting how nearly everyone who has actually seen the movie has been raving about it being one of the best animated movies ever, but then when you talk to people who haven't seen it they're extremely doom and gloom.
I must be a strange outlier then.
@@AlaniTheScriptMage i didnt say everyone liked it, but yeah you definitely fall under the 15% who gave it a thumbs down. It's also important to know that there are different viewpoints for each fan. Theres the movies only fans, the book fans, the fanfiction fans, the ones who dont care either way, and then the people who are heavily against any kind of cinema adaptation of tolkien.
ive seen a lot of people online say its bad, and theyve seen it
@@jesterssketchbook yeah but when did they say it, thats important. Almost every comment online that was negative on the main trailer for the movie was posted nearly a month before the movie even came out.
@@jesterssketchbook idk, i feel like something weird is going on with this movie's advertisement metrics. It's like no one even knows the movie exists, the small vocal minority hate this alongside critics, but almost everyone who went to see it liked the movie or are giving it a 7/10
While I agree with the revivew and liked it and your take. Then I really do think you would do much better if you wrote a script ahead of time :)
the bad camera movement phenomenon you're talking about is probably "parallax"
Given that it was basically a rushed bid to keep the rights (or so I’ve heard), even being half decent is a nice change these days lolsob Also $83 for a parking ticket? I’d be livid too!
I enjoyed it for what it was. I'd say it is similar to the Hobbit movies in that there are parts that I think should have been streamlined or dropped. Definitely could have done with less callbacks and more time fleshing out the characters. Particularly all the giant creatures in the first half.
Yeah, it was odd storytelling. All the main events and interesting characters happening in the background while some side character was highlighted. I have so ripped my hair of with all the lost potential. They definitely had diamond in their hands, Helm and the sons were interesting and their moments were epic... and then they died, but the story went on towards the ending where we had sudden twist with Hera meeting another else very important character. What a weird movie!
I can’t be bothered to care about the movie. I’m not buying the narrative that hera should be uplifted as she has been. This whole movie is a waste of time
she was never uplifted, in-fact throughout the movie she is belittled at every turn, even more so than eowyn. The only freedom she was shown was being allowed to ride out on the plains of rohan and secretly training with wulf as a child.
I had a slightly different take on the Kemen/Isildur confrontation. Give it a watch, just ignore some of the inappropriate humor, you might enjoy it. Good video, by the way. 👍
A film that exists so the film studio can keep the LOTR license...and it shows. Horsegirlies deserve better. Smh.
As someone raised by a horse girl, they *do* deserve better and they know it. My Mom, who is a *huge* lotr nerd, has made no attempt to rush out to see this movie.
Excellent work! In my own reviews, I kind of make a point not to go this in depth, I just have fun. But this was a fine video. Thanks! 👍
Rangs of Poo-er and War of da Roherrim
'Old Celtic hero', _Tolkien_ nerd? I wonder why Tolkien didn't just name him Fionn then and have done with it?
Like the take. I appreciate an authentic opinion that honors the source stories.
I walked out of this movie after about an hour. It's boring, bland, and meaningless.
You can hear the disappointment in your voice.
I love how the standards have been lowered so much by ROP, they're in the basement lol
Spoiler: . . . . . . . . . . . . WTH was that HH sacrifice? He could've easily went through the gates and help defend it from the other side! That was more unecessary than Jack from the Titanic
And apparently his people can see him and Hera running through the snow, but can't fire a few arrows from their front door to protect him. Nor can they throw him a rope. They wanted him dead. There's no other explanation.
And that speech. Ugh. The only thing that makes me think of that sequence fondly is the frozen statue ending was epic. I just wish that the steps we took to get there made more sense
I gave it 3 out of 5 stars. Would have been 2 out of 5 if it wasn't for my incredible power to look beyond the inserted generic female empowerment lines
Yeah. Pretending you don't hear those constant lines really is how you get through it.
@@AlaniTheScriptMagelol
I really don't like this animation style, pretending to be traditional 2D animation while its actually 95% CGI
I didn't mind it most of the time, but there was definitely something off about it.
