This channel is where I show you my approach to building model kits. I believe scale modeling is a journey in the discovery of history, function, purpose, creativity, and art. Now I will be the first to tell you that I am no expert on the subject of scale modeling, in truth I am merely an amateur. Scale modeling is a hobby for me, and as with all hobbies, it is something that is to be enjoyed. In each project I try something new and different and learn a new skill, or a new lesson, often both.
I hope that by watching these videos there is something that you can take away and add to your arsenal of creativity.
I sincerely hope you enjoy the content of my channel. Keep modeling, all those kits won't build themselves!

OH-13 Sioux by Italeri, Part 1 Engine
In this video we take a look at what Italeri has provided for us in their Bell OH-13 Sioux helicopter kit.
The Bell OH-13 Sioux is one of the most iconic helicopters in aviation history. It was developed right after WWII and began service with the US Army in the late 1940s. It is most memorable as the helicopter that was featured in the hit TV series "MASH" and many of these choppers are still flying today.

Hi Johnny, a very interesting choice this time round and a brilliant start by the hillbilly paint chemist 😊 I think the engine once in place will be very noticeable amongst that tubing 👍 stay safe my friend, see you next week 😎
Nice start on the new project 🙂
great episode - and you had a chance to do some scratch building (V-belt pulley) too... great video!
That engine looks really good Johnny, I particularly like the way you layered the silver over the "black" base coat. Very effective use of colour. Looking forward to the next one.
Thanks Gerry, it gives the color a richer depth, I think. Have a great weekend my friend. Johnny
That was a great episode Johnny and the engine looks really good and shines after painting.Looking forward to the next part.! All the best from the U.K🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
Thanks Paul👍I really like building engines and mechanicals; they have that look of purpose that I like. Thanks for watching, take care! See you next Friday. Johnny
Epic work sir 🎩,back to 60s Saturday tv 📺 with the Whirlybirds 👍👍.
Hey Steve, I like classic TV too, they don't make shows like they used to. Thanks for watching have a great weekend! Johnny
That engine looks great, Johnny! Good catch on that "floating" pulley! Italeri kits are bad about that kind of stuff! I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of the kit come together!
Yes, they can be a bit rough around the edges, but they are fun kits to build! I don't know if that pulley attaches to something else later on, I didn't see it in the instructions, so we won't glue that little part into place just in case we have to remove it later. Thanks for all of your support Richard, have a great weekend. Jonny
Great Job, looking real good. Looking forward to next week’s instalment 👍
Thanks Jason👍building engines are lots of fun. Thanks for watching, have a great weekend. Johnny
Hi Johnny, that is certainly a great start to the chopper build, hope you enjoy this build, have a great weekend, best regards to you and your family from Australia, Les
Thanks for the well wishes Les, I hope you have a great weekend too! See you next Friday. Johnny
You always make my Fridays thanks for sharing eh! enjoy your weekend brother.✌Canada✌
You too, my friend, see you next Friday! Johnny
What brand of sprue cutters are you using ? Btw , I really enjoy your building videos. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍
Oh , I just spotted it !
Thank you, Sir, you are too kind. I like the "stedi" MS-100, they have a screw stop which helps prevent the edges of the cutters from slamming into one another, that keeps them sharp much longer than my Tamiya ones. I think you'll like them; they are also less expensive than the Tamiya ones. Thanks for watching, have a great weekend. Johnny
Haven’t built an Italeri kit for a long time, maybe 40 years or so. They still seem to have all the issues they had then. This is going to be a bit of a time warp build for me.
Yes, they still have those little issues you remember, lol. Thanks for watching, see you next Friday, have a great weekend. Johnny
nice looking helicopter Johnny, enjoy👍
I'm looking forward to this little build David, not too complicated, not a lot of parts, but loads of detail. Thanks for watching buddy. Johnny
This looks a great little kit of a great little Helicopter..Some great versions and the U.S Air Cav version is an interesting option along with the Aussie version, both in Vietnam..But there is some other colourful versions. Looking forward to your build of this kit Johnny..Thank you and all the best from the U.K🇬🇧🇺🇸👍
It does look like a great kit Paul, we have some seam clean-up to do, but with that taken care of it should be a nice build. We will see 🤔Thanks for watching, take care and model on. Johnny
Bell didn't name it "Sioux." It's a US Army tradition for naming their aircraft in honor of Native American tribes, with a few exceptions.
I've had so many comments on this I had to do some research on it, which, I guess, will teach me to say anything off the cuff again without exhaustive research. It turns out that once it was an army regulation which was discontinued and now it is considered a tradition. However, there are some army helicopters that are not named after tribes, like the Blackhawk, which was the name of and American Indian, not a tribe. Then there was the Sikorsky Sky Crane, which isn't an Indian Tribe, the Cobra which is a snake, and some others that just had nomenclatures. So, there you go. I hope that will set the record straight and that you will forgive me for my inaccuracy. Thanks for watching. Take care and model on my friend. Johnny
Really looking forward to your build of this kit, as it is my all time favourite. Pour your incredible model making talent into this one, can’t wait to see your results👍
Thank you very much Jason! I'll do my best. Johnny
Always so dissappointing modelkits don't include pilot figures.
Even though I don't always use the figures I do like to at least have the option, but in this case we don't. Thanks for watching, take care and model on. Johnny
just viewed part 2 painting video great airbrush technique with the pre shade and final coat and the waterline masking routine.i will be brush painting entirely using tamiya x acrylics with paint retarder, ive built one boat the tamiya pbr and masked and reversed masked waterline came out well for brush painting.i have learned the hard way not to have paint on the glueing surfaces,so the process for brush painting is different than airbrushing at least with the method ive used.am going to purchase this kit soon.
It's not a bad kit Jeff, some little fit issues but nothing you can't fix. I have the PBR kit which I plan to get around to building sometime, just seems like there is always another kit that comes along and gets in the way. Thanks for watching my friend. Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling thats right got 2 kits on the way and still building the 3rd

Nice review, Johnny! Yes, us old guys grew up watching (and still watch) our beloved MASH!! Looking forward to this build.
I hope you enjoy the build, I think you'll love it! Thanks for Tuning in Drew. Take care. Johnny
very informative and usefull vid, cutting parts off sprue leaving tag end then cutting again makes it easier to remove excess plastic and prevents damaging parts while cutting off sprue due to thick plastic, test fitting then fixing defects, using a larger drill bit to remove burrs after drilling, are all good ideas question there was a part that had the benches that was not square how did you make that area a ninety degree angle was it by adding a piece of styrene?am going to watch the next vid on painting i use brush painting along with rattle can tamiya fine surface spray primer.am going to purchase this kit.
Hi Jeff, thanks for watching. Gosh, I really don't remember having a bench that wasn't square, but then this build was some time ago. If I didn't mention it in the video, then it wasn't an issue. I try to point out all the issues I find with a kit when I review it and build it. Take care and model on my friend! Johnny
thanks for sharing looks like a fun build ! eh enjoy your weekend brother ✌Canada✌
You too, I hope you have a great weekend! See you next Friday James! Johnny
Interesting choice 😊👍
I think so too! Should be interesting. Johnny
WTF are you talking about The instrution aren't in American? What do you Want Spanglish?
It was a joke, one that you obviously didn't get. I hate explaining jokes, it takes the humor out of it, but for you I will. General George S Patton said that the British and the Americans were two peoples that were separated by a common language, something that I also find funny. One look at the languages on the box and you should be able to see that the languages are designated with a flag, none of which is and American flag, just the UK, and there is the joke, all meant in good humor. One more thing Peter, I don't curse on my channel, please don't curse in the comments. Thanks for watching. Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling WTFH "What The Flipping Heck!" sorry but There is a Spanglish Problem for some 'American' Speakers my Bad to Judge!

Are you sanding on top of the model while the glue is drying? What about dust contamination?
You need to let cement dry before attempting to sand it Sal, as for the Perfect Plastic Putty, it's water soluble and is easily smoothed out using a cotton bud and a little water, thanks for watching. Johnny
Thanks for the look at the Bell chopper looks like a decent kit I was in Hobbytown before Christmas and seen the USCG one with the floats I’ll have to see if they still have it and pick it up
Hi Jeff, I think the USCG chopper would be a really unique kit to have. Thanks for watching, take care and model on. Johnny
👍
👌
Looks nice and I'm looking forward to this build. Apropos MASH (big fan here): do you know about the kits Revell did on the MASH theme? The swamp scene with Hawkeye, a medical scene with Hot Lips, and your chopper! I've tried for a while to get my hands on all three to build a larger diorama, but so far I only have one (swamp). They go for impossible prices on Ebay 😞
Those classic kits really do bring high prices, especially when they are out of production Mike. I try to keep an eye out for interesting subjects. Never know when you will run across a good deal. Take care and model on buddy! Johnny
Hi Johnny, this will be a great kit, something different from what you built last time looking forward to this build, when I lived in Christchurch New Zealand the RNZAF had the main pilot training school, and these were always flying over the city and suburbs, have fun building this beauty, best regards from Australia, Les
Thanks, Les, I'm looking forward to building it too! I never got to see these fly, but from what I've read they were very dependable. Take care and see you next Friday buddy! Johnny
Thanks, Johnny. I'm looking forward to watching this build. Looks like a wonderful build.
I think you'll enjoy it, I'm excited to build it John! All of the open structure is what attracted me to this kit. Let's see how it plays out. Take care my friend. Johnny
Never built a helicopter. Can't wait to see you build this one I always enjoy watching your videos.Keep up the good work
Thanks for the support, Raymond, I'll try not to disappoint! Johnny
MASH!😂😂 Johnny I remember it well. Thanks for the memory 😂
I liked MASH to Vincent, they don't make shows like they used to. Take care and hope to see you Friday! Johnny
@hillbillymodeling enjoy your modelling time this week, Johnny 😀
Not just Bell, but all US Army helicopters are named after different tribes. Sikorsky-- Blackhawk, Choctaw Hughes--Cayuse
You are correct, my mistake. Thanks for the correction. Johnny
Well, "all" is a bit too optimistic 🙂 Sikorsky Sea King, Bell Cobra, Cessna Skyhook, Boeing Sea Knight, MH-6 Little Bird, Sikorsky Sea Stallion, Sikorsky Super Stallion come to mind. Just to name a few - there are so many others. And many had no names at all, just their type designations.
@@MikeUSA67all US ARMY helicopters ; didn't say Navy, Air Force or Marines--they have their own names
@@mh53j I see, my bad 😞But aren't the Little Bird and the Cobra used by the Army?
FS numbers are "Federal Standard" colors assigned by the DoD considered to be the "official" color for a piece of equipment. You see them a lot on the old Testor's Model Master enamels; but you can still find other references for them.
Thanks for the info, Richard, that's really useful to know, I'm always learning new things in this hobby! Thanks for tuning in, and I hope the New Year is treating well so far! Johnny
@@hillbillymodeling No problem, Johnny! Glad to help!
I've only been modeling for a few years now and dont know everything about it yet, my question is what is the Carson sticker on the box in the lower right of the box, I have a few kits that have that but dont know why
Sorry, I have no idea what the sticker is referring too. I Googled it and it came up as a "Carson Sticker" is a sticker featuring the name or logo associated with Carson. Which could refer to a person, a geographical location, of even a brand or organization. Yeah, really informative right?😁😁
FS are Federal Standard colours.
Hi Simon, thanks for the info, I really appreciate it my friend. Take care and see you soon! Johnny
A great start to the new year with a helicopter build. I'm wanting to build a helicopter too as a start off for this year. I plan to build ICM's 1/48 AH-1G Bell Cobra gunship from the Vietnam war. It comes with the M8A1 landing mat which should make a nice display base to put the kit on. Also, when you see a FS number for paint it refers to set Federal Standard color used by governments and suppliers for procurement and specifications of paint. Many brands of hobby paints will claim their paint matches a FS number code for different colors. There are a lot of nice paint schemes for that kit.
Thanks for the info on FS codes, Christopher, I didn't know that! It's always good to get some extra tips and info from the viewers. As you know, nobody can know everything, especially me, 😂. Good luck with your Cobra, I'm sure you're going to enjoy it! Take care and see you soon! Johnny
Hey, great review on the OH-13 Sioux. I just bought myself a few hours ago the Revell's Bell H-13H Gunship 1-35th scale. Going to be interesting to build this kit. =)
Thanks for the comment! It's great that you're building that kit, I bet it'll be great! Johnny
Great review on a Tamiya kit, subscribed!
Glad you enjoyed it Bill, I have some more great tank reviews coming soon! Johnny
Hello Johnny do you have video on how to assemble a USS Arizona aircraft carrier
Hi James, hope you had a nice Christmas and New Years. I think you might be confused, there was never an aircraft carrier named USS Arizona, The Arizona was a battleship which was sunk on December 7, 1941, at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. We even built a memorial over the sunken ship in honor of the sailors that die there. But to answer your question, I don't have any build videos of the USS Arizona or any aircraft carriers, take care. Johnny
I am sorry you are right it was a battle ship I should have known that. Thanks for getting back with me. I hope you had a great Christmas and happy new year for 2025 be safe Jim.
