Piper Arrow aircraft interior renovation / restoration, ALSO watch me Building a Vans RV 14 airplane, plus other Flying Videos to Interesting destinations - taking you along for the ride.
I originally started this site with the intention of only adding a few videos on things like replacing the headliner and other interior pieces in a 1973 Piper Arrow aircraft (PA 28R-200) - because I couldn't find very many good ones out there, and then I just decided it would be fun to film and post some of my adventures with this airplane.
In addition to the complete video series on the interior restoration of the 1973 Piper Arrow, also watch me build a new airplane… the Vans RV14.
Other videos cover maintenance items, including the Piper Wing Spar AD (airworthiness directive), and a number or function interesting flights and destinations - taking you along for the ride.

The Wrong Oil Quick Drain for your Engine
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.9 месяцев назад
While isolating a minor oil leak, I discovered that the incorrect quick oil drain had been installed on my piper arrow airplane. Although my airplane had complied with the AD and had the correct valve installed, at some point, that valve was changed out for th...

Jimmy should have covered the “skirt” in blue suede!!!
That's some ratchet build. Christmas lights hanging... seriously?
I'm sick and tired about hearing of Elvis's jet. It is useless and not flyable. Stop tallking about it.
Working on my Cessna 172D now - Airtex provided the rings and pliers, which have worked great for me. lol - your expression when you found them!
LOL… yeah what a day that was… let me know how yours all comes out in the end!
I used to follow Jimmy's World, then he became political and I told him to pack sand.
I still dont know how he passed all the highway regs for drivin it etc ...wow.
Why did you say Jimmy is an "infamous RUclipsr?" Was that a mistake? Infamous means he is famous for making poor quality content. Did you mean to say famous?
I meant it a little tongue in cheek because of all of his near disastrous decisions and wacky self.
😂 makes sense then! What could possibly go wrong?
I thought we're going to replace the seats in front
My guess is that they probably will get them reupholstered, but ran out of time for OSH.
that thing is nuts! but fun though, happy building and enjoy Osh!
It is... hard to believe what they were able to do with that.. it looks great! I'd love to see it rolling down the highway. Thank you!
Love watching both of your channels. Enjoy your trip to Oshkosh.
Thank you! Will do!
GREAT VIDEO 👍👌✨
Thank you!
I owned a Piper Turbo Arrow III for most of the 1980s and got my instrument and commercial ratings in it. Loved that plane. I hope you enjoy yours as well. The PA 28 series is a good one with something for most people somewhere in the lineup.
I agree. It’s a great airplane. Pretty good speed at a low fuel burn, and good room and useful load. Thanks for sharing!
Sub'd. I'm just starting a RV-7a.
Congratulations! Love to hear how it goes. Is this your first build?
@@BlueSkyFlight Yes. I did help a friend build his and was hooked.
I know the feeling. I can totally understand why people become multiple aircraft builders…
Great video again Bob!! 🤗🤗💪
Thanks again!
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is inspiring to those of us getting ready to start our own projects. Keep the build videos coming no matter the content!
Thanks for that. Very nice to hear… I will keep it coming. :)
Just found your channel . I love seeing the different ways people build their Vans .
Hopefully I don’t do anything too different :) Hope you like the channel. Thanks for watching!
I agree . Don't let the camera distract you .. a mess up could cost your life..
It’s definitely a good idea to read through the instructions a few times, away from the project, just to build a good mental image of the process. There have been a few times that I didn’t fully get what they were saying on the first read through. And I do have one error that someone pointed out that I’ll be correcting and covering in an upcoming video in a couple weeks.
@@BlueSkyFlight they have all the parts in cad for there cnc operations... It wouldn't be hard to input them in an animation... Of step by step instructions .. including... What rivets to do in what order and everything... To make an interactive instruction guide... I bet this would free up someone answering the phone all the time ...
Might make it too easy… got to have a little challenge:)
Interesting, I would have guessed the fluting was to introduce rigidity.
Yeah I always wondered how you know how much to flute, but now it makes sense… as much as it takes to get it straight
@@BlueSkyFlight Really enjoying the videos!
Thank you… really glad to hear that!
Love your videos Bob!! Awesome 🤩
Thanks so much! Really nice to hear that.
@@BlueSkyFlight do you already know what engine you’re going to use? For the RV14? Are there options?
I can either use a standard 200hp IO 360 Lycoming, same as my Arrow, or I could go with the new experimental IO 390 from Lycoming that has 210hp… haven’t decided yet.
@@BlueSkyFlight ok great options!! 💪
Looking good. Has your family started to call you Bob the Builder?
LOL… that happened a long time ago :)
I forgot, what did you end up doing with that plywood from the factory in the rear floor? How much did it weigh? I think I recommended replacing with a Gillfab composite sandwich flooring from - or was it a sound dampener issue? Also what did you fly for a living? sorry to be so forgetful
I replaced it by making a new one. Same wood same weight, just new… see the link below. I’ve flown the A320, 757, 767, 737, and the EMB-145. Make a New Seat Bench for your Piper Arrow Interior ruclips.net/video/HkSadMgQwq0/видео.html
@@BlueSkyFlight curious what was the change OEW and CG when you finished - or did i miss it in the cost video?
I think the Vertical Stab is built with RV7 parts (VS 7xx) and that’s why they aren’t final drilled. Same with some of the rudder parts (R-912). When you get to the 14xx, and most of the 10xx part numbers, they are final drilled. I’m enjoying the series, thanks for putting these out
That makes sense. Thanks for that. So far the vast majority of the HS parts and skins have all been final sized. Glad you’re enjoying it!
Rotax appears to discourage the use of quick drains on their oil tanks and I am debating whether to just invest in a siphon pump and remove most of the oil that way before removing the stock drain plug and getting oil all over the firewall and engine mount. I wish Rotax had provided a much better drain system given where most of their oil tanks get mounted.
What is their reason for discouraging?
@@BlueSkyFlight I have no idea. I suspect they simply don’t want to take the time to test different quick drains and the easy legal solution is to simply say they can’t be used. My airplane is a homebuilt, so I can use whatever I want, however, I generally try to stay close to generally accepted practices and manufacturers recommendations.
Makes sense
The Saf-Air web site clearly calls out the issue with the Piper Arrow. Whenever someone performs improper maintenance or repair on an airplane, it can create a hazard. I had a significant oil leak (6 quarts in 1.5 hours) on my Skylane years ago. It was due to an A&P who didn’t confirm that the oil filter gasket had come off with the old filter and ended up double gasketing the filter. Well, two gaskets won’t contain the oil pressure and I landed after a 1.5 hour flight with oil all over the belly of the airplane. Somewhat disconcerting and took nearly a full day to clean up.
What a mess I’m sure. Yes I saw that on their site after the fact. It was a learning moment for sure
Really nice Bob! Excellent details and diagrams mixed in with the cut out parts. I know how hard it is to record while building and then go edit in your “free time”. If I ever build a 14 I’ll be referencing your videos for sure! You coming to OSH?
Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I’m planning to. Won’t have my July schedule for about another week. But definitely planning to. I’m still up for a ride in the ultralight area if you are!
Ok. That was worth the wait. :-). Keep up the level of detail. This is going to help me massively when I start my 14!
Thanks very much! Glad to hear that. My goal is to provide some good insight, nice to know it’s helping!
FIRST!
Thanks very much for watching!
Workmanship looks great! Very motivating for my soon to start build. I’ve been debating the prime/no prime question and if yes, then which one. I like what I see in your choice.
That’s great that you’re getting close. Definitely a lot of priming options. See quite a few people just opt for rattle cans of self etching primer from the hardware store… probably a lot easier than all the paint gun setup stuff. IDK… I also stumbled on to Stewart Systems. It’s a no VOC option so you don’t need all the protective gear… from what I’ve read the only downside is that you need to let it cure for several days before you work with it… but depending on your work schedule. That might not be an issue
CYTZ Toronto city airport?
That’s the one! Check out the Toronto City Airport plus and Update on the RV-14 Airplane building ruclips.net/video/LzBYyLBvnHM/видео.html
Your cameras are incredible.
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed the view.
I replaced the Baggage Door Strap on my Arrow with the Gas Strut Baggage Door Steward! You will Love It!
I’ve seen those. That does look like a good idea
Good job . Looks like the insulation you installed will help with exterior noise entering the cabin .
Thanks it seems to be doing a good job and I feel like the temperature is better as well.
How do you remove the door plastic. I have a Piper archer and need to replace the door plastic which is similar to your Arrow.
If you’re talking about the plastic trim around the top half if the door, you have to remove the screws and the latch cover at the top and then should be just the trim screws around the perimeter.
Once the Eddy current inspection is completed, do you know what is the time frame for consecutive inspections? I was reading 3-5 years but unsure if that was correct. Thanks! Keep up with the great content.
I had not seen any language requiring any further inspections in the AD. I wouldn’t think it would be anywhere near that often. It’s not good to remove those bolts so often. Each time you do you risk damaging the holes. Where are you seeing that.
Looks like a lot of fun ahead. like a kid in a candy store, ha ha
Indeed!!! :)
Nice work. I’m new to aviation and working on my check-ride. Will be purchasing a Piper as my first aircraft. How much should I budget to do the same thing you did to a Piper 180? Could you give your audience a high, medium, and low budget number? Big thanks and you have a beautiful aircraft.
I’ll provide a link to a video where I break down the cost of my renovation. I mentioned in it the my cost would have been 1000 less if I did not do leather on the seats. The video description will also have a link to the Airtex website. You can look up prices for materials specific to a 180 there. Hope that helps! Thank for watching. What's the Cost for a New Interior in a Piper Arrow airplane ruclips.net/video/fdyj4vQPOPM/видео.html
@@BlueSkyFlight Thanks so much! You got me all jazzed up to purchase and pimp my ride!
This is a amazing job. I just bought a SCS carpet due to small animal peed my rear seat floor and cargo floor. I wanna change both floorboard for sure, but i am not sure can i made the floorboard by myself, is it a legal?
When in doubt, I would say always ask an A&P. With that said, most interior work is allowed to be performed by the owner as outlined in 14 CFR Part 43, Appendix A, Subpart C (Preventive Maintenance). I'll provide a link below, just scroll down to subpart C. From what I read there the owner can repair and replace the majority of the non-structural items in the interior (as long as the replacement parts are certified to meet the appropriate standards). All of the carpets and other materials I used for my renovation were from Airtex Products and come with a certificate for my logbook showing that they meet all FAA requirements for fire, etc. There's also a ton of other maintenance that the owner can perform on their airplane in general - but I'd say always talk to an A&P if you're unsure. www.ecfr.gov/current/title-14/chapter-I/subchapter-C/part-43#Appendix-A-to-Part-43
I am totally hooked to your videos. Great work and super interesting content. I am about to repaint my plane.
Thanks for that! Glad you are enjoying them. Are YOU painting it? What do you have?
The arrows are gr8
Agreed!
These videos are amazing. I am about to redo the interior of my Archer and you have given me so many tips and tricks that I don’t have to figure out in process.
So glad to hear that! It’s exactly why I started the channel to document the process and share what I learned.
Ahem. Excuse me, but it’s been a couple weeks since this video has come out. We’re ready for part 4. 😅 Just sayin….
I know… got a little tied up with life :). I’m doing the rudder in one video so was waiting until it’s complete… which it almost is. Initial cuts, fit, prep and prime are done and riveting started yesterday. Should be complete later in the week and then a few days to edit video.
Really great video... extremely helpful, thank you!.... Just a question. Is it possible to fly without the Wing Root Seal?
Check with an A&P but I don’t think it would be a good idea. Without it you’re letting a lot of wind and potentially moisture inside of the wing and the wing spar. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks!
do you need to do a new weight and balance for the log book?
Depends on how much you change. Check with your A&P. For me the insulation swap was pretty even as far as the weight. Same with the seats and panels.
It looks great. Very nice color choices. Your narration is very enjoyable. I was happy see that the materials are from Airtex. I am planning to replace the interior on my C-182Q later this year using Airtex products. I will be a hapy man if it turns out as nice as your Arrow.
Thanks so much for all of the compliments. Yes I am very happy with the quality of the products from Airtex. As you can see, the fit is very good and they are great to deal with. I’d love to see some pictures of your renovations. Shoot me an email to blueskyflight@outlook.com with the before/after pics. Looking forward to it!
I will do so. Thanks.
Ryan flys used broom handle to peel blue film off skins
I’ve seen that trick. I’ll probably use it on some bigger parts. Thank you!
Used cologr marker others used tape. So not to put wrong rivet in wrong hole
Yeah, I use the tape quite a bit :)
Really great video and content!! Love it! Keep up the great work and videos!
Thanks so much!
I am days away from completion. Is there any type of seal between the inner and outer latch on the top of the door? Prior to this renovation I noticed some water on the right side. I’m replacing the seal and wind lace, but still concerned about the potential of leaks. I saw a video that showed 2 neoprene washers on both sides of the other latch, but in the diagram I found I only see one on the outside. I don’t think it will hurt to put one on the inside too…
I don’t have any additional insight on that one, but as long as the mechanism functions with the second washer, I would think it couldn’t hurt either. Congratulations on nearing the end!
I’m in the home stretch of my overhaul with the pilot, copilot, and door panels to finish it off. Really happy with how it’s turning out. My trim is a bit darker than my vinyl, but I went with it anyway. It is actually so different it doesn’t even look like I was trying 😂. Question: I’m getting ready to secure the pilot and copilot panels and I am not super comfortable about how close they are to the rudder pedals. It’s not necessarily touching them but there seems to be play as I can push the panels toward the wall a couple inches. Did you secure it somehow?
Congratulations on nearing the finish line. I didn’t have any of the play you’re describing, so no I didn’t need to. Airtex may have some suggestions. Email me some pics when you’re done. I’d love to see it.
this is fun, lots of new things I have never heard of , looking forward to the next installment
Glad to hear that! Thanks for watching… more coming soon.
