Is Dementia Just a Brain Disease or Something More?
In this episode of I CARE FOR YOUR BRAIN with Dr. Sullivan, board certified neuropsychologist Dr. Karen D. Sullivan discusses the fear, stigma and anxiety that often accompany a dementia diagnosis and finding and harnessing hope for change in the way those with dementia can be socially isolated and how we can work toward a person-centered, positive change in dementia care.

What a huge help you have been!!! I have an appointment with my cardiologist, Feb, 2025. I currently am on 10 MG of Crestor ( Family History) I was contemplating asking to come off, but after listening to you, Think I need to stay on. The only reason I was thinking about coming off is due to no drinking, never a smoker and walk, on average, 35-40 miles per week. I feel better going into February with more info than I had prior to your video. Thank you!!!

I'd be really curious about research that explored effects of eating the mushroom as a food? That would make placebo, double-blind studies nearly impossible. And, we also know that mushroom are highly perishable, so we simply don't know what compounds might be lost or destroyed in the tincture or supplement creation process. I'm also curious what quantity of fresh lions mane mushroom might be equivalent to the supplement dose you suggest.

You're spot on about the social aspect of this disease. My mom had dementia and once she started having trouble tracking conversations her family and extended family sort of shut her out of conversations or ignored her. It was never intentional, but she was very hurt by this. The nursing homes my stepfather and grandmother were in were horrible and I vowed if it was in my ability my parents would never go into one. Thankfully I was able to take care of my dad (with help) for the last month of his life and my mother (again with help) the last 2 years of her life. Our country needs to be educated on this, but unless you or your family is affected no one really cares. Thank God for you and others like you that are trying to help change the norm into new thinking.

I noticed when I was 21. I turned to my wife and asked her if my head was shaking? She said no, why ask that? Because I can I can feel it moving. So I went to see my GP. He said everybody's head shakes when you are talking. He sent me to see a crack. And he turned around and said you are just a nervous person. I'm not a nervous person I'm the manager of a bakery. Then we had a daughter and I knotted her right in the face when she was only two weeks old. So we took her to the hospital then the police social services came in to arrest me and take my daughter into care. Then this neurologist came in and said to give that child back to her parents. I know what that gentleman has got, [ Dystonia ] I thought thank god someone has noticed. Even though I've never heard of it before. Even now some doctors or nurses have never heard of it. I still have Botox even though I've had Deep Brain stimulation. My feet are more like claws where it stops me from walking. Every part of my body is twisted and painful. The only thing they can do for my feet is to brake all my toes

A friend sent me your video on OT, which is something we both have and just recently talked about. We both have TBI's and you really nail it on our feelings and what we go through. Thank you. I sent one of your videos to my neuropsychologist, who's in school right now to further her education in this particular field, as you know, there aren't enough of you to go around. You have such an engaging way of speaking, I hesitate to bring this up, but I just wanted to mention something that I (and all by brain injured friends) struggle with. It's when people "speed talk". It's PAINFUL to me. I can't bear it. I know you have a wealth of information to share, but I was wondering if you could slow your speech down? People with brain injuries NEED pauses when listening to someone talk. I know you might feel it's unnatural, but it's good for our brains. I hope I didn't offend you, I just thought I would give you some input. Thank you for all that you do!

This full body tremor is new to me in the last month and has gotten progressively worse,... from only upon waking, then to in my sleep, to daytime while I'm standing ,walking, or moving. Its all the time So I'm stopping caffeine, taking B complex, and adding magnesium glycinate ASAP, like TODAY because this is scary.

I have small fiber peripheral polyneuropathy and my neurologist is strongly pushing gabapentin. I take 300 to 900 in a 24 hour period. He is pushing for far more than than that, which i wont do. It has helped the burning pain quite a bit. I take occasional Relafen. I wont take opioids, benzos or muscle relaxers. Im concerned after hearing this negative gabapentin info. Any thoughts?

It was difficult to steer my physician towards fibromyalgia as a cause of my symptoms. We started with antidepressants but it was the blood work marker that finally got me on gabapentin. It takes the top off chronic pain to where it is bearable. That in itself is a blessing. I hated biochemistry in college and now I find myself immersed in what causes this in my brain. Voltage gated calcium channels is in the bag, working on substance P.

Google "Mayo Clinic" + "statin decision aid" It'll ask a few questions and then tell you the ABSOLUTE risk of skipping statins, not the meaningless "relative" risk, which BigPharma quotes fraudulently.

Let’s not forget one patient stated before having the procedure Dr Tobinic had him sign several pages of a form that the patient understood and approved that the procedure could cause his condition to become worse or cause DEATH! That would cause me to pause for a moment to reflect on the seriousness of the procedure.

Get DIETARY CHOLESTEROL RIGHT! You’re (partially) wrong about dietary cholesterol. For some people little dietary cholesterol becomes serum cholesterol. But there is a spectrum from hyper- to hypo-responders. There are people who will absorb much more dietary cholesterol than others. If you’re one of those then you darn well should pay attention to the cholesterol you consume.

You've been lied to about statins!! Statins usage: Ochsner Journal Oct/2010 statins induce mitochondrial dysfunction and increases risk of diabetes, hyperinsulinemea and/or hyperglycemia Proven fuzzy math on possible benefits beyond 1% via "relative vs absolute" risk reduction Lowers vitamin K2 Lowers testosterone Lowers CoQ10 Raises liver enzymes and inflammation Lowers DHEA Induces cognitive decline Increased risk of shingles JAMA March/2022 "No consistent relationship between lowering LDL-C and death, heart attack or stroke following statin therapy" Higher cataracts risk There's much more but just mull these stats over for starters!

Thank you for the motivational talk. I am trained and 29 years employed as a child neuropsychologist who was deemed qualified to take the exam (board eligible), but did not pass the exam the first time around. I am taking it again next month, but am really discouraged because about 90% of the questions were adult based. The test is really geared for adult neuropsychologists. There should be a lower cut off score for child neuropsychologists or a different version of the exam. Also, there should be a paper and pencil option - the remote administration was not easy for someone who graduated from college with a typewriter. Any advice or test prep/ test taking suggestions you could provide would be greatly appreciated!

I really appreciated your full analysis of Topamax and it really helped me as I started the drug. (I started August 5th and ended Sept 13th) Unfortunately, I had to get off of Topamax as I was feeling terrible at the hundred milligram dose. However, as I started to titrate down, it soon became apparent that that I was experiencing myoclonal seizures Which created spasms in my muscles and in my nervous system. I Had my last dose on September 13 and every day since then my symptoms got so much better with the spasms ending recently. I am now nine days off of the drug but still experience some dizziness and vertigo which seems to be getting better. Also, with Topamax, I was taking HCTZ, which apparently caused my body to dump potassium into a dangerously low level and required hospitalization. I don’t want to scare anybody off the medicine as it seems effective for so many. Even for me, it seemed effective at 50 mg for about a week, but other than that week, the other five weeks frankly were terrible. Though my experience is very rare, I think it is important for doctors to know about this risk of myoclonus in some patients and so be ready to deal with that as they are getting off of it. Unfortunately, we didn’t have very much help as I came down, but thankfully, I am doing much better now. Just waiting for final dizziness to subside. I know several who are on the drug and I’ve had no problems, So again, I don’t want to scare everyone with my horror story, But just to make the community aware of my own experience. Thanks for letting me share my story!

I was only recently diagnosed with FND and one doctor was dismissing at first. But, as I kept following up with my primary doctor i was getting more compassion. The neurologist was the kindest when he shared the results of my EMG. Instead of saying "there's nothing wrong with you" he said, "your results are normal but you still have symptoms." That's when he recommended talking with my therapist about the physical symptoms. When I did, it was concluded I have FND. Now we are working on a recovery path. I'm grateful most of the doctors were kind and compassionate.
