I'm an occupational therapist on the acute brain and spinal cord injury rehab units at very large public hospital. I appreciate you sharing a different lens to view this situation through, and educating the public on both the heartbreak people experience navigating a broken healthcare system and how traumatic brain injury, medications, stressors, mental health challenges, and chronic pain impact people in so many ways. You presented this in such an informative and compassionate way, thank you for offering your unique perspective highlighting the nuance of a very complex issue. 🧡
I'm not sure what the answer to your question is, but I try every day to be a part of the change I want to see by showing up for my coworkers and patients to the best of my ability. Universal healthcare would be a great start, but I don't know if that's possible in the US. Luckily working at a public hospital, we accept everyone regardless of their ability to pay, so fortunately I'm able to help serve the most underserved in my community...although we're still bound by what insurance will reimburse for to an extent.

I was wondering about a TBI too (I’m a child neuropsychologist) but you articulated this idea so much better than I could have. Thank you for your gift of explaining complex ideas in ways everyone can understand. 🧠

Mental Health care needs to be taken far more seriously in this country.

I think we all, at this point have a very low opinion of the insurance companies. It's gotten ridiculous. This makes perfect sense. I have Dementia from repeated blows to my head. I can certainly understand this.

People need to be protected from the traumatic brain injury explosions. Both the person with this injury, and the person surrounding them. My father suffered traumatic brain injury in WWll. I was his scapegoat. Society and medical services need to acknowledge and protect both realities.

Brain Injury could also be due to lack of oxygenation of the blood. It could have been during surgery. But it does not excuse irrational violence. TBI also could be acquired through prison. a large proportion of inmates have brain injuries.

Being a post acute severe Brain Injury Survivor, yes, brain injuries are possible. "High on drugs" is as likely a contributing factor. A life of relative privilege is also a factor. Living in a delusional world can have consequences. Thinking about our current situation with 45 & 47. Reality has been warped by presumably decades of drug use.

Moderate TBI sounds pretty severe. As does being moderately gifted, when it comes to increased psychological misfortune. And the skull doesn't look designed (as in engineered) to protect the brain, but just happens to be more or less good enough for most situations. And a damaged brain isn't required to lead brazen greed that destroys the lives of millions.

I would be more likely to believe he became addicted to oxytocin (painkillers). An addiction to oxytocin and suffering from chronic back pain will make anyone go psychotic and do crazy things. This was a premeditated murder. He even had a notebook planning this murder. He blamed his mother’s pain and his back surgery plus his own pain on the insurance companies. There has been no connection with Luigi, or his mom ever having united healthcare. It’s possible he may have an undiagnosed mental health disorder and or a neurological illness. He is not mentally insane. He took the time to wear a mask and hide his identity. He also meticulously planned this homicide. His college friends also shared that Luigi enjoyed “Attention”. When the NYPD did the walk of shame when he exited the helicopter and when he was walked to court for his arrangement Luigi appears to be enjoying all the media attention (Grandiose). His distorted judgment was fueled by his hatred. His back pain was so excruciating that his sex life was nonexistent. For a 26 year old that’s enough to put him over the edge. He also glorified and put the uni bomber on a pedestal. It’s possible that he abused alcohol and prescription pain killers as a result of his severe back pain. It’s also very possible he has an undiagnosed mental health condition and was self medicating on substance abuse. I strongly believe he has antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). People with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) are often associated with violent behavior:
    Symptoms
People with ASPD may engage in physical aggression, hostility, or violence towards others. They may also behave impulsively, break the law, and disregard social norms.
    Risk factors
ASPD is a significant clinical risk factor for violence. Some personality dimensions that increase the risk of violence include impulse control, affect regulation, and threatened egotism. His egotism was threaten by not being able to perform sexually as a result of the back pain. So he isolated and most likely self medicated on painkillers. His mother knows the truth. She called NYPD and shared that the man in the photo was her son Luigi. She also shared with them that the homicide was something she believed he was capable of committing. I live in NYC and this was shared by the NYPD on the local news channels.

Brain Injury cannot excuse murder. I am sorry if he also has a brain injury. Jail/prison has to be difficult (I suppose).
