Is This a Good Top 100 Manga List?
I went through the top 100 ranked manga on MAL too see how much I agreed with the list. In retrospect I ranked a decent amount of series higher than I probably would have if I made my own list, way too many series in the 30s. Kind of an in between piece of content to cover my thoughts on a bunch of manga quickly, while I finish recording the last couple lists. Hopefully I'll be back to doing manga reviews within a month.

      If people did it out of the love for the series then they wouldnt care what I have to say but I appreciate people for doing it and I don't think i've said anything negative about them so this seems like a kinda out of left field comment? Encouraging people to follow them/talking about them is just kinda dumb tho because if any series I make a video about ever gets a official publisher, then all my videos would be promoting something which is semi-illegal and something which the mangaka wouldn't want and I dont see a good reason to advertise for these scanlators.

    • @igitt426
      @igitt426 17 дней назад

      @@Zyhius this is all very reasonable. I've watched most of your videos and was kinda irritated by your silence on scanlation whenever a manga would come up that wasn't available officially, but i failed to consider the points you made. it just irked me in particular because I'm a big fan of furuya's and i was waiting for this title to be translated for a long time, until it finally happened about a decade later

      Ahh makes sense, yeah it is nice that there are people in the community willing to translate lesser known titles. It isnt too likely that Saltiness gets a official translation, but his works have in the past and theres just no point risking it for any series really cause i'd have to basically redo the video.

    Obviously I haven't read as much manga as you but I was genuinely shocked by how similar our tastes are when going through your channel. I practically agreed with almost everything you said. I am also one of those yuri fans you described so Bloom Into You is one of the only two things I disagreed with you on in the video (other being Vinland.) If you aren't opposed to it I'd love to see a review of How Do We Relationship by Tmfly. It is a bit risque but I think it genuinely blows every other romance manga out of the water, yuri or otherwise.

    Going through your catalog of videos and I have been agreeing with almost all of them, including this video. Not only did the characters feel incredibly dumb, when their reasons are supposed to be laid out for us, they're hand waved away with a simple 'nobody knows'. Super disappointing.

    Pretty fun review. Spoilers for the manga below. . . . . . I think the major difference in our opinions of the series is I felt like the last two volumes were my absolute favorite, and I loved the resolution, including the humor throughout. I only felt a little dip in quality throughout the middle of the "Marcille Dungeon Lord" arc, but not the final one.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius Месяц назад

      Hmm i actually do agree that the marcille arc was probably the worst part, I did like the post resolution of everything, after they defeated the demon more. Yeah humour was good in the final arc. When it comes to them defeating the demon it wasn't the worst, I just found it a little anticlimactic.

    I was forever changed after watching the OVA, which sounds like an exaggeration. However, it's what led me to try out for lifeguarding and many other part-time jobs (still am, and have done around 7 despite being 18) and have a better outlook in life. The quote "I may be dim, but it's always dark before the glorious sunrise" was my senior quote. The quote "It all just a matter of studying" has been with me for a while now. I cycle everywhere, mainly for health/cost benefits, but the OVA reignited my interest, just feels natural now. It kickstarted my interest in 90s fashion, and that led me to start importing clothing to resell for side profit, and now I recently started a blog. Most importantly, I have a very positive outlook on life, and it honestly feels like little can hold down my spirit, even breaking up with my girlfriend a few months back. Traveling the world is one of my top priorities alongside my Civil Engineering degree, and am going to Korea next month. In all honesty, I owe a lot to the OVA in my development as a person. It has problems, no doubt about that, and I have zero interest in reading the manga, even with fan translations. But the OVA has stuck with me, and whenever I feel down, watching it helps a lot, especially episode 3, as I personally feel that episode is near perfection in terms of comedy and drama. I appreciate your honesty with Golden Boy, and while one of the first things I call it when telling others about it is "it's really stupid", I love it (the OVA, have never recommended the manga) wholeheartedly. Just learning about life to the fullest seems to be my approach, try new things, meet many people, and absolutely never stop learning, as when you do, you stop living. • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius Месяц назад

      The OVA is definitely miles better than the manga and its great if thats what you took from it, those are some of the best ideas the series had. The themes of self improvement and growing did seem like good ones, but it got twisted pretty fast, lost sight of what it was trying to say and oversimpliied things. But yeah the OVA alone was actually quite funny, had some decent ideas and was before it started spiraling and trying to push some broken philosophy.

      Yeah its only really grown on me with time. Him hating a lot of his works is pretty sad, but I think you can see that hes always trying to achieve perfection in works, so him being overly self critical would make sense. Maybe thats what lead him to not write manga in a long time, but hopefully one day he regains his love for the medium and comes back.

    Your'e wrong about it barely having a plot. You can't separate the hentai from the story. Every sex scene in this, all the fetishistic weirdness, serves as a vessel for the narrative. It actually becomes completely plot-oriented after the genre shift. Also, Kintaro is not a "loser who gets tons of girls", he is someone who always wins by the merit of his own skill. However, he is a humble existence, pathetic even, shameless and devoid of an ego, which is the point. The point of his character is about the wisdom of a fool, the invulnerability and freedom of someone who lacks inhibition. You don't have to agree with it, but it is something interesting to think about.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 4 месяца назад

      I mean the words pathetic, shameless and no ego is the same way someone would describe a loser or someones who has lesser societal status. And sure, he is a fool and free, but hes basically just an animal, doing whatever he feels like with no thought, theres really not much interesting about that and its even worse when u consider hes the central focus for 90 chapters. There is a story but its super confused as to what its trying to do, its basically him shifting from one surface level thought of his to another rapidly until you get sick of it. Egawa acts like he has all these solutions and insight into world problems, but he doesn't even offer up one thing of note.

  • @orenji-sama514
    @orenji-sama514 4 месяца назад

    The Golden Boy manga is traumatizing but actually very well-written. However, if it grosses you out too much for you to be charitable with the plot, the depth won't be understood. The problem is the disconnect between the original concept as depicted in the OVA, and what it becomes afterwards, in terms of the target audience. People who liked the beginning of it won't like what it becomes afterwards, by and large. If Tatsuya Egawa had done this year later, he should have made a Visual Novel instead, because suddenly changing the genre into a philosophical pornographic social commentary is much more common and accepted in that medium. My feelings about the manga are that I am disturbed by the direction it took, but still found myself unable to stop reading, and ultimately I found it very thought provoking. I wish it did continue and we got a conclusion.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 4 месяца назад

      I mean he was obviously attempting at making a social commentary, but what points did he make? The government is corrupt? We need to be more accepting of sex? Dictatorships are bad? These are legit meme level points hes trying to make, the series provides no philosophy of any value while acting extremely condesending.

    surprised Usogui isnt in the top 100, ushijima loan shark is in the 3000's but should also be in the top 100. Both are top 3 for me. Freesia should also definitely be top 50

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 4 месяца назад

      Usogui I liked quite a bit but im okay with where it was, there were some incredible arcs and some which were just fine to me. Ushijima loan shark I started a while back and kinda forgot about it, but it does seem like my kinda manga, so maybe it would make it, but its probably just not popular enough for mal. I never got into freesia but I read a lot of other Jiro Matsumoto works and probably at least one of them shoulda made the list. I guess voynich hotel shoulda made it too, kinda reminds me a little of jiro, but theres probably lots of works missing from it.

    • @jojomojo8308
      @jojomojo8308 4 месяца назад

      yea the first 80 or so chapters of usogui are fine but it really becomes exceptional later on. incredible story with incredible characters. Ushijima never got a full english translation so that might explain its unpopularity, but its pretty big in japan. Its also very mature, dark, and gritty so definitely not for everyone, but one of the best seinen of all time imo. My other favs of Jiro are alice in hell and joshikouhei. Alice is definitely one of his more straight-forward works but Freesia edges it out imo. And just out of curiousity, but what is your top 10 manga of all time? great channel btw, keep it up @@Zyhius

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 4 месяца назад

      Those are like exactly the three big jiro works I havent read lmao, I read wendy, citron, Mikai no Hoshi, Yuretsuzukeru, Kakumeika no Gogo and Ichigeki, all of them are very interesting reads although kinda flawed too, imma read Freesia at some point i've heard good things about it. Top 10 is kinda rough I think in no order I would have Hi no Tori, One Piece, Part 7, Vagabond, Ashita no Joe for sure and then GTO, Kokou no Hitou, HxH, Spirit Circle are maybes, Crows, Slam Dunk, Devilman/Violence Jack would probably miss top 10 but be kinda close lol but probably not, maybe a Kaiji part in there, but im still getting through those. Theres a lot of series for the last couple spots im probably missing but thats just off of the top of my head. Theres a ton which I would confidently say shoulda made top 100, but its a lot of work to go through them all.

    • @jojomojo8308
      @jojomojo8308 4 месяца назад

      I really liked Ichigeki too but its not as good as his top 3 works. Thats a solid list, I'd love a video where you breakdown your own top 20 or so manga. My top 10 would and in no particular order would probably be: 1. Usogui 2. ushijima loan shark 3. Kingdom 4. vagabond 5. kaiji 6. Freesia 7. Ping pong club, Minoru Furuya 8. Punpun 9. Number 5 (although I still have to read his other works so it might change), Matsumoto Taiyou 10. ravages of time and some others that are close but dont quite make the top 10 would be one piece, kyou kare ore wa, grand blue, blade of the immortal, golden kamuy, himizu, jojo 7, eden its an endless world, world is mine and some other great seinens

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 4 месяца назад

      Oh yeah kingdom and punpun might make it too, its hard to recommend kingdom to people cause it has a slow start but its top 15 at least, maybe 10, ping pong club and himizu should be on the top 100 for sure but idk where I wouldn't go top 10 personally. Takemitsu Zamurai, Ping Pong and Zero could all probably be somewhere in top 100 , all great works, I havent read Number 5 yet tho. I've been meaning to check out ravages of time and finish kyou kare ore wa cause I forgot about it. Most of those works would probably be on my top 100 except eden cause I couldn't really get into it.

  • @onetimeweeb

    ooh fun idea, though I haven't read as much of the top 100 as you have Our Happy Hours is fine, top 100 is probably a bit much. For the most part I think including one volume stories or oneshots like Goodbye Eri are a bit sketchy honestly, I think it'd have to be a truly groundbreaking or novel work to qualify. Maybe something like Abstraction from Kago Shintaro would qualify for me, but even then probably not. I could see Emanon making it for me I guess. yeah my recommendations are goated af, hirayasumi is great. jjk lmfaooo. not a single section of that manga comes close to top 100 I love SxF and Apothecary Diaries, great series, I'm a lot higher on those than you. Both of them are just so fun and really good at everything they do imo-comedy, art, dialogue, character moments yeah Veil is essentially an artbook. like great art for sure but there's just way more interesting stories and characters in other manga, it's pretty popular in the shoujosei communities iirc agreed on Bloom Into You. it's an ok romance story with some middling, dragging drama. feel like the spicier ending really bumped it up a bit for other people I read an omnibus of Lone Wolf and Cub at my local library and I found it to be really boring and listless for a work that often gets said as the best manga ever. Wasn't really into Death Note beyond the first 20-30 chapters or so, even before the timeskip. I actually haven't even finished it, eventually will, but just became convoluted in a clunky way for me once Misa was introduced HxH overrated on both lists sadly OPM is for sure too high, I think it and Mob Psycho are roughly the same level of quality for me. Though recently OPM has been losing me more with all the redraws and weird plot decisions Nausicaa is an interesting story but a drag to actually read. Grand Blue being so high is shocking. It's funny and has some beautiful spreads with overall good art, but in every other aspect is pretty lacking. Agreed with you on a lot of other stuff, but didn't feel like listing them all.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 4 месяца назад

      Yeah emanon probably has a pretty good chance of making it imo. I like spyxfamily, but I feel like there are works with that chill comedy slice of life style which are just better like grand blue, theres probably others too, maybe like jitsu wa watashi wa or even sakamoto, but it is a fun work, theres just tight competition. Apothecary diaries has a much better case imo, its refreshing does a lot of different things, but yeah competitions just kinda rough. I could see 90s or even higher but I probably would need to fill out the list to be sure and I could also see it not making it. In retrospect I was kinda high on Lone Wolf and Cub, but I dont mind at a lower spot on the list like maybe 60 or 70s. It is written like an older manga and is episodic so I can see why you find it boring, but I think the arts incredible and the plot slowly kinda comes together in a pretty great way and characters too. If you like the whole honour samurai stuff u'd probably like it more. The worst part of it is just how slow it is and theres no way its the greatest of all time lmao. I feel like Death Notes got a lot of reading, but when it kinda all clicks is when its good, but I also havent read it since 2014 so this is based on my opinion from a long time ago lol. After the timeskip I can see why you wouldnt like it. Wait do you like not like HxH at all or do u just think it should be lower or off the list? Cause I think thats crazy i've reread it so many times probably at least 6 or 7, I think I reread it last year even and its just as good, I even like the new chapters quite a bit. Incredible characters, probably the best power system in manga, really fun fights and great paced story. Im kinda still prefering the og OPM tbh, the new chapters in the redraw are going in a different direction which is fine, but I think a little worse. Nausicaas a decent read, but yeah it can drag and probably made the list cause of ghibli hype. I probably overrated where I would put grand blue too lmao, its a really funny work but a spot in the 70s maybe, if even that is probably fine for it. I think there was just a lot of hype around the anime back in the day but idk.

    • @onetimeweeb
      @onetimeweeb 4 месяца назад

      @@Zyhius Honestly I think SxF is better than all of those. Anya alone is more iconic and memorable than any character in those series, and there's honestly very little I'd say those other series do better than SxF in any aspect. I read like 50ish chapters of jitsu wa watashi wa but was not feeling it, the characters were just so obnoxious for me. Yeah maybe, it was just one omnibus, I'll check it out some point later but honestly the action from the bit I read was very unimpressive. Hopefully LWaC gets better for me. I think HxH is maybe average to slightly above average honestly, Greed Island is a terribly boring slog and I don't think Chimera Ant is as great as everyone says it is, though still decent. Yorknew's great and I like most of the other arcs, but I felt like the Chairman Election Arc had a huge asspull element to it and this most recent arc is starting to drag for me. I have it at a 6 for now. Yeah OG OPM storyline is probably better, but the art is just such a big gap. Grand Blue was hyped a lot even before the anime. It's quite funny but the romance in it is just cringy and I feel like the guys there overlap in personality too much, so the character moments for each one basically just feels like a retread of what we've already seen.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 4 месяца назад

      I did like anya as a character and she is iconic for sure, but I kinda tapered off spy x family after chapter 30 until I stopped keeping up, its a decent work past that point, but it feels like its kinda done everything it wanted to do already, but maybe its just different tastes. Ur the first person i've seen having HxH that low lmao, I know some of my friends didn't like Chimera Ant either, but it was my favorite arc personally, it unravelled really nicely and the mereum komugi storyline was one of my favorites in manga. Greed island was probably my second favorite tho, I feel like it was a cool concept that there was more to the game than just nen, genthru was probably the worst main villian in the manga but it was kinda more like a training arc than anything. I liked yorknew and the other arcs too, the chariman election was kind of just a transitionary arc, so I didn't mind it too much, I think what it did well was build excitement for the dark continent. I didn't like the recent arc either when I was keeping up monthly but on reread its actually not as drawn out as I thought. Yeah the romance was not its strong point from what I remember but its been a while since I read it, maybe its just high up cause its accessible idk.

      @@Zyhius I dunno, reading it I just felt like everything was being laid out in a really mechanical way that was setting up for some obvious themes and ideas. I wasn't really invested in so many of the side stories because I felt like it was pretty obvious what he was trying to do with each one. Comparatively I think something like FMA ties together its ideas and plot a lot more organically for example. Training arcs kinda bore me to begin with and the way HxH just spams text to explain stuff, as well as making the arc so long, only made it worse for me. There's technically a lot to the game but only like 4 of the cards or whatever actually get used, the rest of them are basically useless, so it just feels like a waste and nowhere as complex as it initially is setup to be. And yeah Genthru is so lame lmao

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 4 месяца назад

      FMA is more cohesive for sure cause the main point is about the big story, but in HxH its more like we're following a character whos motivations change sometimes and sometimes we follow different characters. I never really felt any issue with it feeling mechanical, with too much text or being too long, but I can see why you think that. I mean I think the whole point with the game was, the most optimal way to play wasn't to play properly, just to abuse the broken cards, but gon and killua still tried to experience it normally which was fun. I think the razor match and the phantom troupe trying to get chrollo's powers back were the highlights of that arc for me.

    Nice list! Was surprised you read the NPC one as well. I thought it was alright, definitely better than the majority of trash LN adaptations out there. Everything else makes sense, have only read a few of those that I thought ranged from good-great (Insomniacs, Service Wars, Dungeon Meshi, Telework Yotabanashi) but have heard good things about the rest. I thought Aharen-san was a nice little romcom and it ended in 2023. Nothing else really comes to mind for me though. I've heard really good things about Children of the Whales and I think I did read maybe a volume of that in my local library at some point, but can't really remember much about it honestly.

      10th place was kinda rough, NPCs wasn't like great, but it was a decent read and I wasnt sure what else I coulda put. Aharen was solid for sure and I considered it, but I didn't think a story like that could go for 200 chapters, maybe like 50-100 so I just read like 10 and didn't include it. I considered children of the whale too, but at the time I think there was like one volume left untranslated, but the art did look great and its translated now I think.

Yeah Shonen Jump's new series are basically miss after miss. Honestly though I think Nue's Exorcist is worse than all of the ones in the video here. Martial Master asumi and tenmaku cinema were ok, but it's been a while since there was an actually good new work, maybe since like Ruridragon I hadn't heard of Ijousha, but yeah it seems bad in the same way. Amazing manga. I think your praise for the art is still underselling how good it is. There's so much character designs diversity and background detail while remaining easily readable. Obviously there are defining characteristics for each race, but each individual still has differing character designs, from eye shape to body type to hairstyle, so I can't agree that they blend in artistically. There are very few manga that have such a range and variety to their character designs, and you can see in the bonus chapters how much experimentation Kui does with them. It's not the flashiest art style, but I don't think it should be confused for being anything less than fantastic. As for the ending, I didn't necessarily have an issue with the grandiosity of it, but I did feel like Laius might have gotten off a little easy with his trick of adding in the ability to eat desires for his ultimate monster, considering that the lion was able to spy on him the entire time they were formulating their plan. I also felt like there was a bit too many comedic moments put in during this penultimate, world-saving battle, especially as there's a few consistent gags that I never really found super funny (but the initial reveal of Laius' ultimate monster being his desire was hilarious). I did just reread the ending after seeing this though and doing so actually let me enjoy the series more, I had misremembered a detail before.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 7 месяцев назад

      Probably coulda talked about character design more as it was very good, but I don't think I would read this for the art or like recommend it to someone cause it has amazing art. Its great art, but I can think of lots of works which are more creative, have better paneling or have better designs. Designs are one of its strongest aspects though, especially on the main cast. There were parts about the ending which felt off, it almost feels like the way he was defeated is almost an afterthought. It makes sense cause everything is food related, but usually she'll hint at something beforehand, this time it almost comes out of nowhere and even the omniscient lion was suprised. I don't think the comedy had to get in the way of the last fight being great if it was off to the side more, but yeah some jokes do come at the most important moments.

    Congrats! and holy chad thumbnail lol yeah I've been thinking a bit about manga content on RUclips when trying to find stuff to watch while bored. Manga collection stuff gets a small viewer base pretty consistently from what I've seen, but there's a huge cap to viewership because only some manga readers even collect more than a few manga, and once you've established as a manga collection channel it seems hard to break out from being that. Collection channels are a bit consumerist anyways and not very interesting to most people, it's just showing what you bought, I'll watch them sometimes if they're reviewing/discussing a series, but haul stuff is not something I like watching. I don't watch channels dedicated solely to one or two series either, channels really making 10-60 minute videos talking about a chapter that takes 2-5 minutes to read lmao. General discussions of a series are great, but making videos to that extent feels more like milking a series for content than anything. Often those channels are just taking theories/analysis from elsewhere on the internet anyways. LMAO yeah there are a lot of clickbait manga videos which only talk about fairly mainstream works, but I don't think it means the format is inherently bad, and I have occasionally come across some videos that do talk about less mainstream stuff. Recently the trend seems to be people who are really good at editing making manga videos about mainstream stuff, though I also find the actual analysis/review/discussion to be generally disappointing and some channels are far too derivative of others. To be honest, I think manga review channels also suffer in views like the manga collection channels do, except it's more due to the fact that people might not have read lesser known series, so aren't really likely to click on a video that is about it, especially if there isn't any clickbait. I really like your content, don't get me wrong, and I think you're one of the best manga channels in terms of actual analysis/discussion, but I think there's a huge cap on how big an actual variety manga review channel can be. The biggest manga review channels I can think of that actually reviewed a variety of stuff is like Gear Third manga reviews and BakaBoysClub, and while they did manage to get a couple thousand subs, I think both of them kinda burned out and also had quite a bump during COVID when everyone was stuck indoors anyways. There are guys like TotallyNotMark or The Masked Man who are big channels that talk about a number of manga, but they basically stick to the mainstream/trendy stuff with an occasional exception and aren't really what I'd consider a review channel, especially when you compare their vids to someone like fantano. Fantano is a big music reviewer, but when you consider how popular music is (probably 100x more popular than manga) and the fact that he's probably the most well-known critic on the internet, his actual reviews don't really tend to get that many views, especially if it's not a highly anticipated release. Obviously he's successful, but his secondary channel that's just a commentary on random music news with some tier lists tends to get more views on average. I also think there's a lot less critical thinking in the manga sphere where fans often aren't looking for actual criticism or reviews, just for people to validate their existing opinions, which the biggest manga RUclipsrs tend to do. Also with an album you mostly don't really have to worry about spoilers in reviews, but with a manga spoilers can be a huge issue for reviews, so people are less likely to watch. Not that I think you're trying to make a job out of this, but just thinking about how it's pretty difficult for manga reviews to reach even a couple thousand views. His rating system is a good format, in comparison it's funny to see people on MAL/Anilist list out their ratings by each number with an explanation when they literally all just end up being the same format of 10=GOAT, 5=Mid, 1=Trash. I really think you should occasionally do a recommendation video, those tend to get nuts amounts of views regardless of channel size and can give more exposure to your channel. Plus with you having so many manga read, I feel like you could do a good amount of obscure recommendations too, many other recommendation videos tend to list the same "underground" manga. Though you might want to do a bit more editing for that, which might be a bit of a PITA, but the ones with better editing tend to go farther. Spent a bit too much time on this nerd essay lol but had a lot of random thoughts.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 8 месяцев назад

      Thanks! Yeah I do find that manga collecter/haul videos usually do get in the 1000s of views, which is generally better than reviews, but you are really pigeon holed into doing that one thing and I also don't really watch those videos, maybe if theres actual discussion but even then its usually not that thorough. The channels dedicated to one manga always feel like they're milking it, I actually thought the exact same thing as you about people making long videos of things it takes no time to read lmao, I feel like the better discussion videos usually come from people who make like 1 long video about a series or something, but idk how you can pump out 100+ videos on one series without it getting stale very quickly. Yeah the clickbait manga videos I think are better for newer manga readers, but yeah anyone whos read a decent amount probably knows most of the series they talk about. And yeah I would like them more if there was better analysis, but usually it comes off first impressiony and more like a reccomendation than any actual discussion. Yeah gear third and baka boys were the biggest strict manga review channels i've seen too and yeah manga review channels probably get the least views out of all of the types of videos, but I think its very dependant on if your video is highly ranked in youtube search. Most of my most popular videos show up pretty high in youtube search and some reviews I've seen can break 10-20k easily if its ranked high enough and enough people are searching for it. The problem is no manga channel I've ever seen consistently gets ranked highly in search and most videos there are like one ofs from creators who normally don't make reviews. I always thought of the Masked Man as moreso the clickbait type and TotallyNotMark as more a Dragon Ball creator, he doesn't milk it as hard as some other content creators. I think his success with other review videos probably is mostly spillover from his DB audience, but idk. Theres a lot of reasons why manga isn't as popular as other mediums, I think spoilers and people just wanting the same opinion as theirs is part of the reason, but its fairly inaccessible, people don't know where to start reading manga and theres no easy way for people to even hear about manga(other hobbies might have clubs or discussions online, but you won't find manga content online unless ur looking and most "anime and manga clubs" are basically just anime clubs) people don't know where to read works, people don't know which way to read panels and most people who have even given manga a shot, probably haven't read anything which isn't like JJK, Demon Slayer or like CSM levels of popularity. Also if you go on like the manga reddit or like forums, you probably won't find much discussion or community, usually just like chapter posts, so that too makes it harder to get into manga. MAL/Anilist have a ton of issue, but somehow the ratings overall usually aren't ever that bad, like popular series get overhyped, but they don't have as much as much of a review bombing issue as other mediums like music or anime. And usually the lowest score is like a 5, so u have to judge from like 5-10 overall. Indivual reviews usually seem like they have not much thought put into them with some exceptions, but I guess thats how it goes when you're a community based review site. I actually might make a reccomendation video when I make top 10s this year since you mentioned it. I've seen them get a lot of attention, and sometimes they can have like a series I haven't heard of but I didn't make them because something about the word reccomendation always felt weird to me. Usually if I talk about a series, i'm just giving my thoughts/opinion and people can check it out if it sounds up their alley, rather than thinking other people will like it. It is a good way to talk about a lot of more underrated series without getting very little views though, so I'll try it out. Appreciate u typing out this nerd essay lmao, I pretty much had very similar thoughts to yours on manga youtube.

    • @onetimeweeb
      @onetimeweeb 8 месяцев назад

      @@Zyhius Yeah pretty much, there's also quite a number of those channels. Definitely, lines in motion is a good example of a channel that makes a great analysis video on a specific manga most of the time but still has variety, so their content feels fresh. For sure. Most of them have basically nothing to say in regards to something like art for example, like not asking for a technical breakdown, but at least describe the art and what you like about it beyond a surface level "it looks good and has lots of detail" or something. imo someone could probably "clickbait" and then talk about an unknown series though and get views if done properly, but it would require a ton of editing like those guys do. If you search for some specific unknown manga yeah, though also depends on the popularity, which is a bit of an issue cause reviews of the more mainstream stuff will probably get drowned out by bigger channels. RUclips search results are influenced by your own history though, so if you want a more accurate picture you'd have to search in incognito mode or sign out. Sometimes a manga will blow up in the West after an anime adaptation, which causes older videos on the manga before the anime aired to suddenly get a bunch of views iirc. Yeah neither of them are truly review channels, I've seen them put out some reviews occasionally I think (I've only watched a few of their vids), but Masked Man is more recommendations/commentary while TotallyNotMark is more a mix of review and analysis. He grew with Dragon Ball but I think he's basically mainstream variety now. Yeah music is just more accessible comparatively, can go on RUclips or Spotify and look them up easily, takes less time as well to listen through an album than to read an entire manga typically. I just meant that music reviews are obviously more popular than manga reviews, but even then people who watch mainstream music reviews are probably more open minded and experienced when it comes to music, while people who watch mainstream manga reviews seem to have only read a few manga and just want people to reinforce their existing opinion in comparison. r/manga used to be better, now it's become flooded with shitty fanbox bait and twitter manga. Mangadex is probably the best place for discussion nowadays, but yeah it's not easy finding places to talk about manga. Oh no the ratings are fine, I'm just making fun of the people who feel the need to set their own rating system in their profile as if it's super unique lmao Well you don't need to say recommendation in the title necessarily, sometimes it's just something like top 10 must read manga or something, but honestly the title you had last year is fine I think. it's mainly just the thumbnail you might want to change imo, most of them typically have a format where they put 3 manga in the thumbnail split in thirds, a quick search and you'll see a lot of them using that kinda format. Choosing like 10 manga you like and giving your thoughts on them should suffice for a recommendation, I've seen ones that have gotten thousands of views where they read like maybe one volume of manga at most lmao, or didn't even like the series that much.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 8 месяцев назад

      Yeah lines in motion does away better job at talking about art than me which is great and very much needed. I guess i'm trying to cover the whole series in 10 minutes ish so its not quite as in depth in every aspect. The recommendation videos from them though I found to be like half series I've read and half series I probably wouldn't like. The anime thing is true for sure, my lucifer and the biscuit hammer had like 30-40 views and it jumped like a couple hundred when the anime dropped. You can kinda predict what videos will rank high relatively I made a whole list of big series with not many videos about them, but sometimes I just kinda want to review what I wanna review lmao. Yeah I feel like there was discussion on r/manga like 5/6 years ago but idk what changed. Mangadex can be good but I normally only read comments on certain works so idk how good the general discussion on forums is. Ohh lmao that makes sense, i've seen that before, guess they just wanna feel special. Yeah I think the thumbnail is a big deal and I spent way more time on the vid than the thumbnail and kinda just threw it on last second lmao. I'll try that format and maybe some other ones to see what looks best. There are search optimizer tools that tell you what words work in titles/descriptions and recommendations is a word which is always one of the top ones, maybe i'll throw it in as a tag or in the description but keep the title the same and it might work better.

    • @onetimeweeb

      @@Zyhius yeah it doesn't need to be as in depth since your videos are a different style anyways, lines in motion is an analysis channel while your channel is a review channel, just using their channel as an example of what I think a good manga analysis channel is. yeah not going to throw too much shade here, but I don't really like watching either channel. shitty moderation really and flood of trash content smh Yeah, fantano's simple format works for him, but he's been at it for a long time and is pretty recognizable for anyone interested in music. Since you're much a smaller channel, you might want more eye catching thumbnails comparatively. Oh but then you say he’s “edgy” like I get it the art style makes Ragna look edgy but you act like it’s not a serious moment like when Ragna is catching BODIES how is that edgy ???? And REALLY? a steins gate comparison? Just cause of time stop it’s not even the same premise like bro use ur brain be reasonable why is time stop and ability that can’t be used in this story when literally lots use it and it’s not like it over says it’s welcome because it’s genius how they need the power cuz its OP with Ragnas OP powers it makes sense he wasn’t given power he obtained it and is willing to sacrifice his body to use it just like in fate with Shirou emiya it’s not a hard story to comprehend you just think you know what it’s about without each character perspective and why it’s written like this

      Ur critiquing shit I didnt say lmao I didn't call it a copy, in fact in the video I said the experience u get from ragna crimson is vastly different from all those series, I didn't refute any of ur points cause ur misunderstanding what I said and you dont sound like u want to listen to anything I have to say lmao. Also ur comment just says a whole lot of nothing. Its fine for characters to be scared or weak if the circumstances demand it, but Ragna knows he has the power to defeat a lot of the dragons and hes still whiny as shit. Killing people doesn't make u any cooler and I understand that you hold this series in a very high opinion, but u honestly did a very bad job of explaining why you like it, you're just rambling, you can put up ur review if u want, but I honestly gave it a pretty high score for what it is, anything above 5 is above average. In my eyes it seems like this is one of your first few manga you've read and you're probably very young, so you're probably gonna die on ur hill, but just know some of the things u like about the series, I don't, and just because I don't, dont let it stop u from enjoying the series and some of the positives I mentioned in the review.

    I'm not sure about your criticism on weak arc tbh. Frieren's arc is stronger than most shonen out there, including trendy shows like KnY, MHA, AOT In El Dorado arc, it's been hinted that the demons had contingency plan to keep their race survive even after Demon King's death. That's a big plot point, bigger than a simple journey to heaven, which by itself would have been fine either way. Frieren is not your typical shonen, it doesn't need or require twist, mystery, drama to function as a good story, not that it lacks any of it. I think you misunderstand between edgy characters and complex characters. Himmel, Heiter & Eisen are definitely more than meet the eyes, and we'll be supposed to learn more about them as we follow Frieren. The author is putting us in Frieren's shoes in this case. Regarding the Priest Sein and how he just disappeared from the story, I'm just gonna quote Himmel: "A tearful farewell befits us not. After all, a reunion would be most awkward". We'll be seeing him again.

      Maybe I sounded a little harsh, but yeah it is better than any of those and I still like the current arcs, they're just not as good to me as the beginning of the series or some of my favorite shounens. I never called any characters edgy, just think they've been simple so far which isn't a bad thing, maybe theres more to them later but idk. And yeah it is very likely Sein comes back, but i've been waiting for him to come back for 2 years lmao.

      @@Zyhius About Sein, I think that's just the author's message. Don't dwell on anyone, just walk your path. If you're destined to meet again, you'll meet again. If not, then it was still a time well spent nonetheless. I didn't expect to meet the mage who supervised the first exam again or Denken so soon, and their stories were overwhelmingly touching. Will they ever appear again? I hope so, but even if they don't, it's fine because they already left a piece of them in my mind.

    yeah one of the best newer series out right now, very much enjoying the series even if the later action focus isn't quite as good I agree about the art when it comes to action (I'd be a bit harsher even, sometimes they're more like marionettes than fighters), but I'd also note that I think too many characters are often too expressionless. It makes sense for Frieren who's lived a long time or the demons as it's in their nature, but even many of the normal human characters are too stonefaced.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 10 месяцев назад

      Yeah that is true, it didn't really bother me too much other than a few serious moments where characters(asides from Frieren) had blank faces, but the art isn't mind blowing by any means.

    • @sleepylion9788

      Real fighters are stone-faced when they fight tbh. Don't expect everyone to scream and laugh like kids like in your typical shonen.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius 10 месяцев назад

      Fighters do show some expressions like if you've seen Anderson SIlva or like any UFC fighter, they're not always completely blank, usually they look quite focused, but the fight scenes to me isn't where the expressionless problems were, usually it had more to do with the other scenes of grief or joy.
