  • I went through the top 100 ranked manga on MAL too see how much I agreed with the list. In retrospect I ranked a decent amount of series higher than I probably would have if I made my own list, way too many series in the 30s. Kind of an in between piece of content to cover my thoughts on a bunch of manga quickly, while I finish recording the last couple lists. Hopefully I'll be back to doing manga reviews within a month.

    Obviously I haven't read as much manga as you but I was genuinely shocked by how similar our tastes are when going through your channel. I practically agreed with almost everything you said. I am also one of those yuri fans you described so Bloom Into You is one of the only two things I disagreed with you on in the video (other being Vinland.)
    If you aren't opposed to it I'd love to see a review of How Do We Relationship by Tmfly. It is a bit risque but I think it genuinely blows every other romance manga out of the water, yuri or otherwise.

      I'll definitely check it out but yeah idk if I'll like it if it's yuri. Vinland saga, I haven't read in a long time, it was at like maybe 100-200 chapters when I read it but I gotta read it again sometime to see if it's any different now

    i hated oyasumi punpun, for me its not in the top 10000, vinland saga is great until the farmland arc ends

    surprised Usogui isnt in the top 100, ushijima loan shark is in the 3000's but should also be in the top 100. Both are top 3 for me. Freesia should also definitely be top 50

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius  5 месяцев назад +1

      Usogui I liked quite a bit but im okay with where it was, there were some incredible arcs and some which were just fine to me. Ushijima loan shark I started a while back and kinda forgot about it, but it does seem like my kinda manga, so maybe it would make it, but its probably just not popular enough for mal. I never got into freesia but I read a lot of other Jiro Matsumoto works and probably at least one of them shoulda made the list. I guess voynich hotel shoulda made it too, kinda reminds me a little of jiro, but theres probably lots of works missing from it.

      yea the first 80 or so chapters of usogui are fine but it really becomes exceptional later on. incredible story with incredible characters. Ushijima never got a full english translation so that might explain its unpopularity, but its pretty big in japan. Its also very mature, dark, and gritty so definitely not for everyone, but one of the best seinen of all time imo. My other favs of Jiro are alice in hell and joshikouhei. Alice is definitely one of his more straight-forward works but Freesia edges it out imo.
      And just out of curiousity, but what is your top 10 manga of all time? great channel btw, keep it up

      Those are like exactly the three big jiro works I havent read lmao, I read wendy, citron, Mikai no Hoshi, Yuretsuzukeru, Kakumeika no Gogo and Ichigeki, all of them are very interesting reads although kinda flawed too, imma read Freesia at some point i've heard good things about it.
      Top 10 is kinda rough I think in no order I would have Hi no Tori, One Piece, Part 7, Vagabond, Ashita no Joe for sure and then GTO, Kokou no Hitou, HxH, Spirit Circle are maybes, Crows, Slam Dunk, Devilman/Violence Jack would probably miss top 10 but be kinda close lol but probably not, maybe a Kaiji part in there, but im still getting through those. Theres a lot of series for the last couple spots im probably missing but thats just off of the top of my head. Theres a ton which I would confidently say shoulda made top 100, but its a lot of work to go through them all.

    • @jojomojo8308
      @jojomojo8308 5 месяцев назад +1

      I really liked Ichigeki too but its not as good as his top 3 works. Thats a solid list, I'd love a video where you breakdown your own top 20 or so manga. My top 10 would and in no particular order would probably be:
      1. Usogui
      2. ushijima loan shark
      3. Kingdom
      4. vagabond
      5. kaiji
      6. Freesia
      7. Ping pong club, Minoru Furuya
      8. Punpun
      9. Number 5 (although I still have to read his other works so it might change), Matsumoto Taiyou
      10. ravages of time
      and some others that are close but dont quite make the top 10 would be one piece, kyou kare ore wa, grand blue, blade of the immortal, golden kamuy, himizu, jojo 7, eden its an endless world, world is mine and some other great seinens

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius  5 месяцев назад +1

      Oh yeah kingdom and punpun might make it too, its hard to recommend kingdom to people cause it has a slow start but its top 15 at least, maybe 10, ping pong club and himizu should be on the top 100 for sure but idk where I wouldn't go top 10 personally. Takemitsu Zamurai, Ping Pong and Zero could all probably be somewhere in top 100 , all great works, I havent read Number 5 yet tho. I've been meaning to check out ravages of time and finish kyou kare ore wa cause I forgot about it. Most of those works would probably be on my top 100 except eden cause I couldn't really get into it.

    ooh fun idea, though I haven't read as much of the top 100 as you have
    Our Happy Hours is fine, top 100 is probably a bit much. For the most part I think including one volume stories or oneshots like Goodbye Eri are a bit sketchy honestly, I think it'd have to be a truly groundbreaking or novel work to qualify. Maybe something like Abstraction from Kago Shintaro would qualify for me, but even then probably not. I could see Emanon making it for me I guess.
    yeah my recommendations are goated af, hirayasumi is great.
    jjk lmfaooo. not a single section of that manga comes close to top 100
    I love SxF and Apothecary Diaries, great series, I'm a lot higher on those than you. Both of them are just so fun and really good at everything they do imo-comedy, art, dialogue, character moments
    yeah Veil is essentially an artbook. like great art for sure but there's just way more interesting stories and characters in other manga, it's pretty popular in the shoujosei communities iirc
    agreed on Bloom Into You. it's an ok romance story with some middling, dragging drama. feel like the spicier ending really bumped it up a bit for other people
    I read an omnibus of Lone Wolf and Cub at my local library and I found it to be really boring and listless for a work that often gets said as the best manga ever.
    Wasn't really into Death Note beyond the first 20-30 chapters or so, even before the timeskip. I actually haven't even finished it, eventually will, but just became convoluted in a clunky way for me once Misa was introduced
    HxH overrated on both lists sadly
    OPM is for sure too high, I think it and Mob Psycho are roughly the same level of quality for me. Though recently OPM has been losing me more with all the redraws and weird plot decisions
    Nausicaa is an interesting story but a drag to actually read.
    Grand Blue being so high is shocking. It's funny and has some beautiful spreads with overall good art, but in every other aspect is pretty lacking.
    Agreed with you on a lot of other stuff, but didn't feel like listing them all.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah emanon probably has a pretty good chance of making it imo.
      I like spyxfamily, but I feel like there are works with that chill comedy slice of life style which are just better like grand blue, theres probably others too, maybe like jitsu wa watashi wa or even sakamoto, but it is a fun work, theres just tight competition.
      Apothecary diaries has a much better case imo, its refreshing does a lot of different things, but yeah competitions just kinda rough. I could see 90s or even higher but I probably would need to fill out the list to be sure and I could also see it not making it.
      In retrospect I was kinda high on Lone Wolf and Cub, but I dont mind at a lower spot on the list like maybe 60 or 70s. It is written like an older manga and is episodic so I can see why you find it boring, but I think the arts incredible and the plot slowly kinda comes together in a pretty great way and characters too. If you like the whole honour samurai stuff u'd probably like it more. The worst part of it is just how slow it is and theres no way its the greatest of all time lmao.
      I feel like Death Notes got a lot of reading, but when it kinda all clicks is when its good, but I also havent read it since 2014 so this is based on my opinion from a long time ago lol. After the timeskip I can see why you wouldnt like it.
      Wait do you like not like HxH at all or do u just think it should be lower or off the list? Cause I think thats crazy i've reread it so many times probably at least 6 or 7, I think I reread it last year even and its just as good, I even like the new chapters quite a bit. Incredible characters, probably the best power system in manga, really fun fights and great paced story.
      Im kinda still prefering the og OPM tbh, the new chapters in the redraw are going in a different direction which is fine, but I think a little worse.
      Nausicaas a decent read, but yeah it can drag and probably made the list cause of ghibli hype.
      I probably overrated where I would put grand blue too lmao, its a really funny work but a spot in the 70s maybe, if even that is probably fine for it. I think there was just a lot of hype around the anime back in the day but idk.

      Honestly I think SxF is better than all of those. Anya alone is more iconic and memorable than any character in those series, and there's honestly very little I'd say those other series do better than SxF in any aspect. I read like 50ish chapters of jitsu wa watashi wa but was not feeling it, the characters were just so obnoxious for me.
      Yeah maybe, it was just one omnibus, I'll check it out some point later but honestly the action from the bit I read was very unimpressive. Hopefully LWaC gets better for me.
      I think HxH is maybe average to slightly above average honestly, Greed Island is a terribly boring slog and I don't think Chimera Ant is as great as everyone says it is, though still decent. Yorknew's great and I like most of the other arcs, but I felt like the Chairman Election Arc had a huge asspull element to it and this most recent arc is starting to drag for me. I have it at a 6 for now.
      Yeah OG OPM storyline is probably better, but the art is just such a big gap.
      Grand Blue was hyped a lot even before the anime. It's quite funny but the romance in it is just cringy and I feel like the guys there overlap in personality too much, so the character moments for each one basically just feels like a retread of what we've already seen.

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius  5 месяцев назад +1

      I did like anya as a character and she is iconic for sure, but I kinda tapered off spy x family after chapter 30 until I stopped keeping up, its a decent work past that point, but it feels like its kinda done everything it wanted to do already, but maybe its just different tastes.
      Ur the first person i've seen having HxH that low lmao, I know some of my friends didn't like Chimera Ant either, but it was my favorite arc personally, it unravelled really nicely and the mereum komugi storyline was one of my favorites in manga. Greed island was probably my second favorite tho, I feel like it was a cool concept that there was more to the game than just nen, genthru was probably the worst main villian in the manga but it was kinda more like a training arc than anything. I liked yorknew and the other arcs too, the chariman election was kind of just a transitionary arc, so I didn't mind it too much, I think what it did well was build excitement for the dark continent. I didn't like the recent arc either when I was keeping up monthly but on reread its actually not as drawn out as I thought.
      Yeah the romance was not its strong point from what I remember but its been a while since I read it, maybe its just high up cause its accessible idk.

      @@Zyhius I dunno, reading it I just felt like everything was being laid out in a really mechanical way that was setting up for some obvious themes and ideas. I wasn't really invested in so many of the side stories because I felt like it was pretty obvious what he was trying to do with each one. Comparatively I think something like FMA ties together its ideas and plot a lot more organically for example.
      Training arcs kinda bore me to begin with and the way HxH just spams text to explain stuff, as well as making the arc so long, only made it worse for me. There's technically a lot to the game but only like 4 of the cards or whatever actually get used, the rest of them are basically useless, so it just feels like a waste and nowhere as complex as it initially is setup to be. And yeah Genthru is so lame lmao

    • @Zyhius
      @Zyhius  5 месяцев назад +1

      FMA is more cohesive for sure cause the main point is about the big story, but in HxH its more like we're following a character whos motivations change sometimes and sometimes we follow different characters. I never really felt any issue with it feeling mechanical, with too much text or being too long, but I can see why you think that. I mean I think the whole point with the game was, the most optimal way to play wasn't to play properly, just to abuse the broken cards, but gon and killua still tried to experience it normally which was fun. I think the razor match and the phantom troupe trying to get chrollo's powers back were the highlights of that arc for me.
