If you are moving to work in Edinburgh it's worth looking at living in Fife, just across the forth. In many cases it's easier and cheaper to commute across the forth bridges to Edinburgh rather than pay the sometimes extortionate rents or mortgages asked for in Edinburgh. Especially in the heart of the city. The housing and standard of living is also often seen as better in Fife and there are lots of affordable new-build houses as well as older/historic properties. Crossing the road bridge is free, Scotland has no toll bridges, and there is also regular Train and Bus services into Edinburgh.

As a landlord that has advertised on OpenRent, the only amounts we'd charge upfront is the deposit, which can be 5 weeks of the rent and then 1 month rent. There's scammers on both sides, as fake tenants and as fake landlords. I have been offered 1 year rent upfront so someone could secure a property, I always find this suspicious and wonder why, we had one that paid up front and ended up growing drugs in the property so now anyone offering more than we ask is always refused.

This is great cure for some part of the cost of loving crisis, because when we seperate needs from wants and we are realistic about personal financial growth rayher than keeping up woth the Joneses then we are well on the way to a happier lofe devoid of unending list of direct debit.

You sounded so much like what I have been kicking against in the last 6 months. Car built in Germany in April. Its only UK'S license that's putting that monthly payment stress on hold presently, but I'm thankful that my God pass them all. Something came up last week that would help me win that argument. At least we can get our deposit back from the car company. I'm already started looking to buy just a small car for Somto and myself. Just one off payment. All these direct debits here and there are just not adding up to one's financial growth.
