Red Mountain Volcano Scramble // Northern Arizona
Red Mountain is really something to see. This volcano is one of the oldest in the San Francisco volcano field. Besides being one of the oldest cinder cone volcanos, Red Mountain is probably the most unique. A side of the mountain has collapsed revealing all of the rocks and minerals, and since then water and ice erosion has carved hoodoos, alcoves, chimneys, and very thin slots. This is a playground for someone like me and so I have returned to do something I've always wanted to do, which is to scramble out of the amphitheater and get to the summit. This is the first Volcano Scramble of the many coming up in my little side series.

The first 4 minutes of this video is collection and composition of my shots I captured exploring Yellowstone over the summer. The video then starts as I begin one of my failed hikes. @@codiacstudios Yeah, I wanted to ask after i started watching your videos. The one with the Middle and South Teton there's a lot of nice rock up there. That big line straight up the middle of the Middle is some kind of volcanic vent and the whole Teton range was just a fault scarp that was thrown up millions of years ago. That always fascinated me about the area. And of course, Yellowstone Lake is just a giant caldera that could blow at any moment and block out the sun for a decade or two. Cool stuff.

      I've seen many diamondbacks on my adventures. I stepped on one without getting bit by thunder mountain. Those are myths. There are absolutely No UFO or hauntings here. There is military aircraft that use secret Canyon to help guide them toward the military base on the rim.

    • @Yojimb001

      @@codiacstudios That is kind of what i was thinking because one time camping at a campground near hanksville, utah the owner told us we would see strange craft flying over at night and we did. And when we quizzed him about it at breakfast he explained it as that area from salt lake city to las vegas and then to alomogordo, NM is called the "san rafael triangle" and not necessarily because there are many ufo sightings and the skinwalker ranch also but because this whole area has the most military installations and concentrations of nuclear materials in the entire world. But I do know that a lot of people in Santa Fe are into the whole crystals and geology creating energy and vibrating at a higher wavelength theory which is what the guy on his podcast says about sedona. me personally, I think most of the UFO sightings that are claimed lately are our own next gen aircraft (which if you look at the B-21 raider...it looks just like a UFO)

    @Yojimb001 Месяц назад

    Judging from the remaining snow and the size of the Bison calfs, I am guessing that this was earlier in the season maybe mid to late May. Not many people just pick a big peak that is off the established trails to climb or scramble up. There's some good ones up in the Northeast corner of the park. One called The Thunderer up by Soda Butte that me and some friends thought the name was really cool and hiked out to it and then found it was like straight up kind of stuff that looked sort of like like The Devil's Tower the closer we got. We gave up before we ever got to the base of it and then a couple years later I read an article that said some guy had died trying to climb up The Thunderer. And if you ever get up to that corner of the park, lots of Grizzlies, lots of goats and Cooke City, MT is a great place to hang out and have lunch. Great video.

    This trail looks much more inviting than the ones with the bushwacking in Sedona (although your point about that making you tougher is correct). Plus, that was one big ass raven near the beginning. I find ravens out in the wild to be really magical and mysterious beings and if you are not careful, they are natural scavengers and they love to fly off with your keys in particular. I am still trying to decide too if I like your videos better where you are solo because I get a lot of your interior monologue out of that, and I know when I'm hiking, I think about all kinds of strange stuff like why the ravens liked my keys so much. Nice touch throwing your lunch in there after the hike at Indian Gardens. That looked pretty good and really healthy. Another great video...keep 'em coming.

    Teewinot...yeah, I remember that one of yours. Hey Cody, when you do these day hikes and climbs is it like you said in one video that you see the summit and think to yourself "I wanna get to the top of that" or do you prep by looking at All Trails or a Quad Map? I was in the Marine Corps so I like to look at a map and see where the elevation gains are and terrain appreciation is a big deal if you are going pretty far off grid (like the Wind River Range in Wyoming). And that thing about the Superstition Mountains was cool but creepy. Great video.

      I like the challenge of going in semi blind. It ads to the adventure. It is like figuring out a puzzle. On some adventures I study a topo map to make sure to give myself the best chance. The summits of Sedona are very difficult to scope out. Most topo maps are not detailed enough even with the help of Google earth. Sometimes you just got to get out and see what it looks like.
