Climbing, Summiting, and Getting Stuck On Gibralter // Sedona, Arizona

  • The wait is over!!! The backcountry duo is back for another adventure! In our mini monument valley Gibralter is one of the most striking sandstone buttes. Without a trail or much traffic at all, Gibralter is wild and demands constant route finding. I couldn't believe how stunning the views were every step of the way. To Michael and I, summiting this mountain wasn't the challenge. Finding our way off the back east side had us stuck, frustrated, and the good kind of scared. Will our confidence and knowledge of the area help us escape?...

    Dude, your channel is so good. I’m a trail runner based in Flagstaff/Prescott, but I hit up Sedona quite often to run the trails there. Your videos show me places I would have never seen otherwise, and I appreciate the artistry with which you film everything!

    Oh wow, we just went up to the first summit of Gibraltar from little horse trailhead and thought that was a lot but you guys did the whole traverse! I just made a video on it, and from below I thought it looked a little like Yosemite's El Capitan. also in a wash not too far from the trailhead, we found a old rusty car wrapped around a tree.

    Funny how once time starts ticking and it gets old to keep going back up certain sketchy down climbs start to look like great viable options!!!! Great job.

    Really fascinating how different the terraine is in Sedona versus southern arizona. I dont run into too many shelves like that but then again I dont have too many friends to peak bag with 😢 lots of loose rocky stuff though.

    • @codiacstudios
      @codiacstudios  5 месяцев назад +1

      You don't need a friend to bag a peak. Some of my best hikes ever were when I was alone.

    • @exploringgodscountry
      @exploringgodscountry 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@codiacstudios thanks and amen to that. I get nervous, as around me some of the peaks are quite remote and right on the border. But you're right I just need to go, otherwise, I likely won't make it up all the peaks I want to climb :) I am only making it up a couple a year at my rate :(

      @@codiacstudioshrm... I did Sardina Peak on my channel. Probably most difficult but was just a steep slog for 600ft. The tallest of the seven sister peaks is on my list, but I need to gain experience. I drug a friend out to attempt it, he said he wanted to bring ropes at least for way down (that's another video). Atascosa peak I think is a class 3 with exposure (fall risk). I'm really quite terrible at knowing my ratings. I went to scout it but got spooked first time, second time I started climbing down onto the ridge. Then my buddy wanted to turn back. I'm told there's a 60 foot scramble then you're in the clear but didn't make it that far. Yeah there's a fair amount down here. I need to do a survey. Those are a few on my list, must disclose I'm petrified of heights... sometimes they bother me, and oddly others they don't. I'd like to build a tolerance, then go back to the Canaidan Rockies, used to spend all my vacations there. You have some AWESOME climbing in Sedona though and your channel is SO cool.

       The easy climb down into Jim Bryant Canyon is still there, it is just not very obvious, you can see a kmz (with description) on ropewiki website under the One Trick Pony canyoneering approach route (and the Skyline canyoneering approach route). It is really funny that you guys tried to climb down both of the aforementioned rappel routes before you found a new novel way down, pretty amazing if you ask me. There are two other ways down, one is terrible down into Jim Bryant Canyon between peak 2 and 3 of your ascent, the other is a hidden trail on the westerly side back down to Llama Trail with a really nice view of Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock, if you want I could show you the route (and the easy way to the top of Gibraltar from the south side). 😉

    • @codiacstudios
      @codiacstudios  5 месяцев назад +2

      That is cool that you know of that easier route up. I'm not interested in what's easy and what anyone could do. I like the challenge and figuring things out. I could have looked at a map on the descent but Michael and I prefer using our Navigation skills. The route we took was awesome and would definitely do it again. I had so much fun, even while getting cliffed out. The views really are just stunning. Thank you for your knowledge of the area Tony!
