Ultra-Climber on the 2008 Fargo St Hill Climb - Remix
This is a remix of the original 2008 video, with a 5X speed-up of the middle segment of both climbs, set to duty free electronic music.
Original 2008 Description: Cycling Instructor/Aerospace Engineer, Dan Gutierrez uses a special bike he created to climb straight up Fargo Street; the toughest hill in North America with a 32% grade for over 1/10 mile in length. This video was shot on the day of the LA Wheelmen Fargo St. Hill Climb on March 16th, 2008. Brian DeSousa did the tripod and hand-held video camera work, and Dan shot the helmet camera video. This video demonstrates that the concept of adding a second crank to a single bike - in this case a cyclocross frame with long chainstays - an...

      Yes, though I tend to think of it as recreational engineering. I set myself the task of using only commercial off-the-shelf parts, so the handlebar stem is from a tandem stoker setup, but reversed to point down instead of up, and I shaved off the arms of cranksets to make the "cranklets" on the 2nd shaft. I also do had to take apart an old derailleur to make the idler pulley setup on the right side drive. As you can see in the video, in spite of practice, I was sometimes over-correcting my steering inputs. it is a hard mental adjustment to make to wait a long time for the bike to respond to a steering input at such low speeds. I would also point out that I had planned to do 4 runs, each one gear higher, but my chain broke when I tried to do a downshift after climb #2, and I did not bring any chain tools with me that day.

    Ever since I've been using cameras when cycling people don't mess with me. Before the cameras, a small percentage of people would use their horns or yell out their window even though I follow the statutes to a tee. I've only encountered one obscene verbal by a random passenger in a truck when in the bike lane at an intersection. Normally I take the vehicle lane when stopped at intersections but my mind was in autopilot at that moment. People also don't realise many of us cyclists are also motorists and we also pay our fair share of road taxes.

    Imagine this bike with one of those new 52 tooth cassettes on it. I'm going 22 32 44 and 42-11 on my road bike now. I want it to be the easy hill bike, though not as easy as this one, but should be able to climb 1 in 4 hills at a steady pace without having to stand/stomp on the pedals. Also 44/11 is not a bad top gear for a flat bar road bike with 700c wheels. I have no use for taller ratios like a 52/11 apart for occasional setting speed records downhill. Those are for drafting and pedaling along on fast powered bike kits.

  • @TimpBizkit
    @TimpBizkit 3 года назад

    Now how is it descending? Do you slide off the seat?

  • @TimpBizkit
    @TimpBizkit 3 года назад

    I'd have to zig zag this hill even in a 22/34 I think. Perhaps get one of those 52 tooth cassettes and super long cage derailleur, a 22 tooth granny and 2.75 to 1 mountain drive + a hub gear reduction - should be able to backy someone up the hill if it didn't tip over.

    • @CyclistLorax
      @CyclistLorax 5 месяцев назад

      Stability on such a steep grade one of the key issues affecting cornering for those switch-backing up the hill on a conventional frame. This is why I made the handlebar and seat mods, so i could ride stably at such low speeds.

    If I'm at a three way stop sign... say "T" for example, and I'm biking along that top line heading west, would I have to stop or can I ride right through? Trying to figure out the rules of the road because I like biking clockwise around this lake, but there's a lot of three way stop signs and traffic lights along the route. If I go straight through it's not like I risk getting hit by someone heading north since that's not an option, but I also feel hesitant because I don't want to blow through the stop sign or red light if it's not allowed.

    i drive like this sometimes but not for such extended periods. I usually only take a middle lane to cross over quite quickly and make it obvious I am going left at the next light. I do see your point here, and I acknowledge that most poeple would not ride like this. As i make maneuvers like this i always say over and over in my head, "They DONT want to hit you. They DONT want to hit you. They want you to get out of their way so they can move along".

    I think it's okay to run stop signs/lights if you can clearly see there is no cross traffic. And I'll also ride up on sidewalks if no one is using them or they're wide enough to accommodate both bikes and pedestrians. Pedestrians mostly always will step aside for you and not be D's about it. Also, establish eye contact with any vehicles at crossing so non-verbal cues can be picked up. Just keep your head on a swivel and be aware of your surroundings and you can ride free and easy by both obeying and disobeying traffic laws, bikes allow you that freedom IMO.

    • @es-qf2gw
      @es-qf2gw 3 года назад

      @nitrain32 you should never run a stop sign or traffic control device, you may miss a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed in the distance. It only take a fraction of a second to make a lethal mistake.
