  • Two League of American Bicyclists certified traffic cycling instructors ride southbound (SB) on a major arterial with a bike lane, using an assertive lane position to avoid crossing crashes on driveway and intersection approaches, and to control narrow lanes to prevent to close in-lane passing.

    Brian or Dan,
Thanks for your informative and clear reply.
On a road like this one that a bicyclist is not familiar with, are there any simple rules for when to leave the bike lane? Perhaps start moving out as soon as you see a Bike Lane Ends sign in the distance? And also when you see a broken bike lane lines in the distance, indicating that there is potential crossing conflict? But here, bike lanes usually stay solid past driveways, so the broken line trick won't always work.

Gary, we are complying with CVC 21208, which has exceptions for hazards (a)(3), and when approaching places where right turns are authorized (a)(4). The next few responses show the full text of the law.

Yes, the NB bike lane is the companion video to this one, showing the other side of the same highway. The video has the same name except NB instead of SB.

(a)(2) When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
(a)(3) When reasonably necessary to leave the bicycle lane to avoid debris or other hazardous conditions.
(a)(4) When approaching a place where a right turn is authorized.
    (b) No ... bicycle [operator] shall leave a bicycle lane until the movement can be made with reasonable safety and ... after [signaling per Section 22100 series laws] in [case] any vehicle may be affected by the movement.

In most places it is clear to me why you are not using the bike lane when it is present. But not always. Can you list all the reasons for why you don't use the bike lane in this video?
    Thanks.-- GC

21208. (a) Whenever a bicycle lane has been established on a roadway ..., any person operating a bicycle upon the roadway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at that time shall ride within the bicycle lane, except that the person may move out of the lane [when]:
    (a)(1) When overtaking and p
assing another bicycle, vehicle, or pedestrian within the lane or about to enter the lane if the overtaking and passing cannot be done safely within the lane.

With all this in mind, here's a quick summary of reasons we left the lane with video time in square brackets:
21207: (BIke lanes not built to standards) [5:50-6:25]
    Bike Lane Ends: [2:00-2:26], [7:15-7:26]
    21208(a)(3): [2:26-2:38]
    21208(a)(4): [1:28-2:00], [3:09-3:39] [5:50-6:03] [6:25-6:40]
