- League of American Bicyclists certified traffic cycling instructors demonstrate how to traverse a roundabout in Irvine, CA. The video shows cyclists acting as drivers of vehicles by controlling the entry lanes from two directions prior to entering the roundabout, and making over one revolution through the center of the roundabout on each pass. The main idea is that to properly use a roundabout, one must integrate with motor traffic, and enter it in the same way as other vehicle drivers. Done that few times, that path is a nice shortcut through Shady Canyon over to Turtle Rock. In that case the sidewalk makes sense since it gets you to the path, as you can't get through the gated community on the road. - Brian
As a bicyclist with a roundabout in my morning's commute, I wish all motorists (and cyclists) understood how roundabouts work for bicycles.
I may be slowing down the traffic a hair as I come around the circle, but maybe folks should look at this as a good thing. Part of the reason for the roundabout is the two elementary schools (one private, one public) in the immediate vicinity. Slowing down the cars is essential for everyone's safety.
What blind spot? You presume that we have a blind spot. With a wide angle "take-a-look" mirror I can see very well behind me. Yes, I can see Brian as we traverse the roundabout. This is how we stay so well synchronized in our movements, as this makes the video much easier for the viewer to watch.
I know that area, I usually take the sidewalk. Have you tried going up that hill to shady canyon? Its my favorite spot to bike.
I'm seeing a lot of lane changes without scanning. I see that you have mirrors, but how can you be sure you're not being overtaken by a faster cyclist in your blind spot?
