Rockhounding Calcite Onyx near Nephi, Utah!
Rockhounding Calcite Onyx near the Ponderosa Campground East of Nephi, Utah. This area is along the Nebo Loop scenic byway and does not have a shortage of spectacular views, especially in late Spring (this was filmed early June) when the wildflowers are in bloom! The onyx from this location can have some really neat patterns and is a fun stone to work. I made a sphere and a couple of cabs from the pieces I collected. There is a short steep hike to the collecting area from the road below, but it is a fun and easy place to collect.

Rockhounding South of Santaquin, Utah for fossil shells! Rockhounding fossil shells along the Nebo Loop Scenic Byway in the southern part of Utah County. This particular spot is found along the Mt. Rockhounding the Centennial Eureka Mine in the Rain!

The Centennial Eureka Mine is located on private property just outside of Eureka, Utah. This location is typically closed to collecting, but I was fortunate to be able to go with a rock club that had permission from the land owner to collect. The rainy weather worked to our advantage as it made the rocks "glow" when they were wet, making them easy to spot and collect. I was able to collect mine...

Few years back at "Shark Tooth Hill" in Bakersfield, CA, I found a Megalodon tooth that caused quite a stir. You have to pay to dig there and there was a group of folks working on their masters in paleontology from UC Berkeley that were a tad miffed that some dummy like myself could be so lucky, but that's all it is... luck. Pretty cool find and the docent offered me $80 for the tooth, but it's priceless as far as I'm concerned.

This is really cool. I’ve lived in Utah on and off my whole life and never heard of either of these places. As a kid in the 70’s my grandpa took me to LOTS of historical sites, Pony Express, frontier graveyards, historic homes etc. Back then, you could go to the caves around Kanab and scrape sand off the walls (My guess is that it was illegal back then also, but I was probably eight or nine so I didn’t know any better) and collect many different colors which we would then layer in clear Coke bottles as a decoration. Grandpa had a decent amount of money so quite often he would bring 9-10 grandchildren on these adventures and we would stay in the same “hotels” (I use the term generously) that Hollywood stars like Gary Cooper and John Wayne used while making westerns in the 50’s and 60’s.
