  • Collecting fossil shells in the mountains along the Nebo Loop scenic bypass road near Payson, Utah. I also collected Birdseye Marble, which is a conglomerate of fossilized algae.

Hell yeah man, very cool finds! What kind of saw are you using on those fossils? A little saw like that seems very handy.

Thanks! I use an Ameritool 4 inch lapidary trim saw on these.

What are these rocks? How did you know something was inside each?

They are Turitella shells encased in Limestone. I judge them based on the look of the rock and the general shape. And then some luck :)

Our almost 10 year old boy wants to go hunt for fossils in the Nebo Loop today! Do you have coordinates or an approximate location you can give us?

Sorry, just saw this. These ones were found about 2 miles up the Mt. Loafer trail. Really anywhere in that range from Spanish Fork to Nephi at the higher elevations these can be found. I have stumbled across these fossils many times while hiking those mountains in the Nebo Loop!

Have you ever tried polishing the algae balls? I found some large chunks in hobble creek and want to polish or face polish some of the larger specimens

I have cut and polished algae balls in the past. Some of them have really cool bullseye rings in them and look good polished up!
