Sooty Gull Successful Search
In this video I will teach you to love Sooty Gulls. Not everyone likes gulls but when I had a chance to visit Oman, Sooty Gull, Ichthyaetus hemprichii, was one of the birds I wanted to search for. Sooty Gulls were not hard to find in Oman, they were on every beach and harbour I went to, allowing me to get enough footage to make this video; Sooty Gull successful search.
To see birds like these Sooty Gulls, join me on one of my birding tours - calidrisbirdingtours.com

Green Magpie call & amazing attack
Просмотров 316Месяц назад
Common Green Magpie call and attack filmed on my mobile phone at Kaeng Krachan National park in Thailand. Green Magpie is always a noisy bird making many different sounds including mimicry of other bir...

    Just saw about 25-30 great egrets at the Smith and Bybee Lake nature preserve in Portland Oregon USA. We have a lot of blue herons here but I hadn't seen an egret before, so they must prefer the preserves for their peace and safety. Cool video!

      I think you have hit upon a subject that is very under appreciated - the need for areas without disturbance. A lot of birds can make do with suboptimal habitat but if there is repeated disturbance they will fly away, using up energy and losing valuable feeding time. Preserves, even small ones, give birds that feeling of security where predators (humans, pets etc) do not disturb them. 25-30 is a good number for sure, but check this lot out - ruclips.net/video/bxALKDlqSkk/видео.html

A far cry from sitting watching them in Kent where. the sea & their music sent me to sleep . Perfect bliss.

    Excellent video Nick, right now I'm starting to get into the field of ornithology and I was very struck by the binoculars you use in the video, could you help me with information about the equipment?

    • @BirdingwithNick
      @BirdingwithNick Месяц назад

      Mine are RSPB 10x 42 binoculars. I think the particular pair I have are no longer made but think this is the current equivalent - www.vikingopticalcentres.co.uk/product/rspb-harrier-10x42-binoculars/ However, if you are new to bird watching then you might just want to buy something cheaper. There are lots of decent quality binoculars that are available for good prices so you can see if it for you without spending a lot of money. My advice would be 8x42 or 10x 42. 10x will be better in open country as it is higher magnification. However, if you are new to using binoculars then slightly lower magnification might be better - they have a wider field of view making it easier to find birds, particularly in woodlands. I do not recommend anything that has a narrow field of view, it cuts down light and makes it hard to spot birds. This applies to those really small pairs like this - www.vikingopticalcentres.co.uk/product/rspb-8x32-puffin/ - the narrow 32 field of view makes life difficult. I am surprised the RSPB would sell something this inferior. Undoubtedly Swarovski make the best quality lenses but their binoculars are very expensive. You get what you pay for but not a pair for beginners. I need to do a video on this subject. Many people ask me these questions.

    00:13 Well... ackchtuallly (sorry, I just HAD to..🤓.) Comb Duck is the South American one, Sarkidiornis sylvicola... It's split, at least for now... But it seems The Powers That Be want to lump them to one species. At least, this is according to IOC, which I follow. Maybe Clements count them as one?🤔

    • @BirdingwithNick
      @BirdingwithNick 2 месяца назад

      Yes, thanks for pointing that out. You are right about that of course, but my reference was really pertaining to many of the field guides that were not updated when they were split and the fact that locally, most birders (at least the ones I know in Asia) are still calling it Comb Duck. In fact when discussing the species with lots of Thai birders recently, all of them called it Comb Duck when speaking in English. As an aside, the Thai name is เป็ดหงส์ (duck swan) and that does not seem to have changed whether split from the South American birds or not. Split, lumped, split, lumped. It's hard to keep up with. The birds must be very confused about their identity.
