  • Watch a variety of Sri Lanka birds in this virtual bird watching trip to Tissamaharama. I lead you around the wetlands, woodlands and rice fields to show you a selection of the exciting diversity of birds of this fantastic birding location.
In this Sri Lanka virtual birding video we visit the ancient, shallow irrigation reservoirs of Tissamaharama, known locally as "tanks". In reality these reservoirs are full of biodiversity with a wide variety of birds and it was exciting to explore the habitats and birds here over the course of a couple of days. Birds such as Indian Peafowl, White-naped Woodpecker, Great Thick-knee and Grey-headed Fish Eagle were some of the birding highlights for me but there were many other species of birds to enjoy. I hope you enjoy joining me in this virtual bird watching trip around Tissamaharama, Sri Lanka.

I live in the southern province of Sri Lanka. Almost all the birds in this video were in my village about a decade ago. Later, all the forests were destroyed and oil palm was planted. Now there are very few birds and some birds are rarely seen. Not only did they lose their homes, but they also couldn't find food, so they migrated to other places. I feel a little happiness that they are well in this place. Thankyou for sharing this video ❤

That is areally sad to hear. Palm oil is a very destructive crop that no birds can live in. I see it here in Thailand too where they are now converting rice fields that are full of birds into palm oil plantations that have none.

Thanks Peter, nice to get positive comments. In this one I filmed most of the footage with an old Panasonic Lumix FZ 300 - amzn.to/44sTgPy - which has now literally fallen apart. Some of the bird footage was also filmed using a Canon 7D Mark 2 - amzn.to/3YVd3G4 - with a Canon 100-400mm lens - amzn.to/3R01yLM. I have switched to a new camera with a bigger zoom to get better footage of birds, a Nikon P1000. You can see some of the improved footage in this video - ruclips.net/video/4bmLyOaPDls/видео.html. I have taken plenty more improved footage, it is just waiting for me to edit it in an interesting fashion.

Yes, I really enjoyed spending time at Tissamaharama. Most people spend a short time there as many of the birds found there are widespread but by spending time there I was able to see a lot.

Being a Sri Lankan birder myself , i thank you for visiting Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is just waking up to the birding phenomenon with so many young birders starting it as a serious hobby. With just less than a hundred birders in the country about 3 yrs ago now we have a huge community.
Your videos help our birds by promoting ecotourism and in return the bird habitats become preserved.
    Thank you very much sir

Thanks for that lovely comment. It is good to hear that birding is growing in Sri Lanka, that can only be good for bird conservation in the future. It would be nice to think that my videos contribute in some small way to that. I look forward to returning to Sri Lanka for some more birding.

Nice variety of birds. This looks like a birding paradise. Oriental Darter looks just like our Anhinga here in Florida. Those paths look really cool hanging upside down. :)

Thanks for watching. Yes, it really was a great place, birds everywhere and many of them not particularly scared of people. Oriental Darter's scientific name is Anhinga melanogaster so I guess that tells you all you need to know about the similarity there.

Thanks for those kind words, they are much appreciated. The footage was shot in mid-March this year just as Sri Lanka's economy was collapsing; prices rising on a daily basis!!! It was a really enjoyable place to go birding in and hope to lead a tour there later this year. Indeed, a long delay between videos; I have been busy leading birding trips in Thailand.

@@BirdingwithNick Thanks Nick and hope the crisis there will sort itself .Have a YT contact and it's hit so hard affected her birding activities ...For tourists it doesn't hit as hard but enough to notice .Hope you get another chance later this year.....Miss your great presentation .

Yes, my contacts in SL are having bad time of it too, and only shortly after some hope had arrived after covid19. The effects were obvious even when I was there with food running out in several of the hotels I stayed in and drivers telling me they were not sure if they could take me to my next destination because thet could not get any fuel. Fortunately for me the violence did not start until I had left.

The body is Canon 5D Mk2 but much of the bird footage was shot using a Panasonic Lumix FZ330. Both cameras were used making this video.
