Oldest Stories
Добавлен 26 июн 2011
In this podcast, you can hear the oldest stories still known, tales that have passed the test of time with flying colors, though usually because they were written down then buried for millennia. This show is focused on the history and myth of the Cradle of Civilization, bronze age Mesopotamia, beginning with the dawn of writing. The history runs begins in the mythic mists of 3000 BCE and will continue until the bronze age collapse around 1200BCE, with myths of heroes and gods, and tales of daily life peppered throughout. Never fear though, for your humble podcast host has taken these literally dusty old stories and breathed new life into them, or at least as much as I am able. So join me as I re-tell millennia old tales, making this possibly the most derivative podcast you have ever listened to. You can check out notes for each episode at oldeststories.net and you can also listen on any quality podcast app by searching Oldest Stories.
The Mythical Semiramis in Ancient History - Oldest Stories Podcast
The tale of Semiramis is one of those myths that everyone used to know, and many people used to take quite seriously. It is a tale from the Greek era which purports to tell the whole story of the great and ancient Babylonian and Assyrian empires, ultimately based on a now-lost set of legends that grew around the historical queen Shammu-ramat, wife and Queen of Shamshi-Adad V and mother of Adad-Nirari III. It will be for next episode to see the height of her power in real history, but it is worthwhile to pause and consider what was thought of her and of Mesopotamia throughout much of the late classical and medieval periods. To read from the horse's mouth, a good translation can be found he...

The Angry Puppet: Shamshi-Adad V - Oldest Stories Podcast

The angry and impotent king Shamshi-Adad would accomplish quite little during his reign of the Neo-Assyrian empire, but he would manage to completely annihilate the resurgent Babylonians and set them back a full century, while also marrying Shammu-Ramat, the inspiration for the mythical Semiramis, and allowing the Assyrian Empire to descend fully into the Age of the Magnates, or Assyrian Feudal...

lovely series, great work
Homosexuality was not as widely accepted as our historians like to pretend in ancient Greece + Rome.
There were homosexuality opponents for sure, but there was also a community and practice of homosexuality that is historically unusual for its size and cultural prominence. Saying that, the majority of the Greek population, as with most historical populations, was both not homosexual and had moral opposition to it. However, because the homosexual portion of the population was unusually large and unusually influential in the written record, it is still valid to note its outsized cultural influence in various parts of the Greek sphere. To go too far in either direction, either insisting that there was no homosexual practice and ideation and it was universally condemned or to claim everyone was gay and happy all the time, are both mistaken. That said, I do genuninely believe that the homosexual class in classical Greece was at least partly responsible for their surprisingly vehement misogyny, though likely not the only cause.
I wish there was more speculative fiction where history is wiped out and all they had to go on was fragmentary fiction/propaganda but most of the time it seems to be played off for jokes or for some cyclical history narrative or an inevitable cultural decline angle instead of something recognizable where the understanding of history is deeply warped and filled with "...maybe?"
Our minds are in the same place. I have long thought that an early space colony at some far distant star will be largely at the mercy of its ship's library for background information on human history, with no real ability to gather more. And if that library were to be manipulated - or even suspected of manipulation - knowledge of history for that branch of humanity could be permanently and irreperably warped. But a story about that might be more subtle than many writers can pull off. Still, I hope someday to see a thing like that. As Semiramis shows, that sort of historical drift really does happen, and if you study the medieval commentaries there are real warping effects on the human mindset as a result.
53:22 Did I miss the link for Egypt channel?
It isn't a new channel, it is for youtube channel members and patrons, at least for the first year. Paid content isn't optimal from my perspective, but youtube is really pushing it and I probably wouldn't be able to make time for it otherwise. It will all get released for free after a delay, because I know we can't all fork over cash for youtube channels, but I do appreciate the support from those in a position to do so.
34:44 wouldn’t it be awesome though? I remember watching Irving Finkel recreating Noah’s Ark and if I remember correctly, he stated that Mesopotamian bitumen had better waterproofing quality than Indian (I think that’s where he was) bitumen. I really wish that we find out that somehow they did such tunnels and bridges. I am such a dreamer that’s why I need evidence based channels like yours. If it wasn’t for people like you, I was already an ancient astronaut theorist 😂
I found your channel through your total war: pharaoh videos, and i just want to say i find them really interesting. You see a lot of videos on YT about Rome or Greece or Medieval europe, but not a lot that go into detail on the ancient civilizatiosn of the near east. theyre glossed over in history classes or not given the spotlight in other ancient history videos, so its cool to see that we actually have a lot of knowledge on the kingdoms, civilizations, and cultures of this important region in world history, and time period in human history.
I am glad you are enjoying it. I wish there were more legit popular Mesopotamia vids, but I am blessed to do what I can.
Sir ! I think I detected a hint of scepticism in your words ?! lol 😂 i believe everything. Where else do you suppose Elephants disguised as Camels came from ? Mr. Academia ?
Sounds right to me. The world needs more fake elephants
Omg omg omg. I'm literally risking life and limb to be here* This is, indeed Thee oldest stories* ! I'ts exciting. I'm extremely excited* Let's find her.
Let's find her*! Indeed
@b0b0- Right ? I've always liked the idea of these, mysteriously Amazonian, Steppe Tribes, hunting men for sport. The Ghost dog's, Snake's in the hair, screaming some Storm God's name in an orgy of blood and violence. . . Sorry, what where we saying ? lol 😂 i
@b0b0- Yes ! It appears the ancient Greeks may have, slightly full of bollox, frankly but ! That doesn't mean there isn't character's like this to be, uncovered* discovered ? There's even a few suggestions toward the end of the video of some .... Better candidates lol 😂
18:00 The plane! The plane! 😂
That being is not just immoral, he is beyond immoral. He violated a child again and again and led her to the underworld not just leave it there but makes a song bragging about his cunning and the childs naivety, putting blame on her. This confirms what we already know about these devils, that they ruthlessly drag those who let them decieve through darkness forging whatever lies to achieve their goal.
The way you pronounce Egyptian names is very Hawk Tuah
Cool. Time to role play.
great stuff!
Great episode! Can't wait for the next one Make sure to pop in the Middle Ages in your .. is it 5-year plan now 😅 Should be good 👍
lol, that would be a more than five year plan. There won't be any endings any time soon though.
Here she Comes. I'm firmly of the opinion that the Medes are so named after Medea* I love this. I can't wait. I have no Idea how I'm going to put all this together. Homer* keeps talking about ' the Pelasgians ' . . . If she* was a princess who was carried away into slavery, or offered* as a slave but progressed through concubine* to Queen* I definitely have a thread to pull on. All the way up to Musa of Parthia*
(Bae-El)
Either I'm actually losing my mind, finally or I'm hearing Dionysus* and Danann* ( Dan Dana Danu Anu Eire...) Let me stop there lmao 😂 something going on here. We're just coming to the earliest I had been previously, wait what? so my heads spinning. .. Good show sir. ∆ thanks again. Excuse the rambling but my political bias is crying out for a female ruler! . Bring on the Amazons ..
The female is Semiramis / Shammu Ramat, so not exactly an amazon lol. But still noteworthy.
@entirelyalive I'll take it ! 😂 Free association* lol
I've actually seen the black obelisk* . . . I had no idea what it was. What a shame. It's in London. No coincidence I can't help thinking. It's a very strange thing, to see Cleopatra's needle on the Banks of the Thames or the Egyptian Mummies. I used to think it was just treasure hunting, the spoils of conquest. Then I began to realise, it's so much deeper than that. . . ∆ Slainte mo chara ( Still watching lol ) love it.
The pressure washer is hilarious.
Awesome video. Thank you!
Omg you are complaining on everything. I like your knowledge of historical facts but you should keep to history and let studios work on their stuff to make game fun.
This topic hurts lots of feelings… and it’s really hard for them to comprehend. Imagine if you spoke about how the first church was designed by Assyrians and Christianity is only a copy of the ancient Assyrian religion Ashur the one true god and his attributes modern scholars mistakenly classify it as paganism , the three major religions of today took only 1 attribute of Ashur and said this is god. … Islam = Holy Spirit only (Ishtar) … Christianity = Son only (star of shamash) … Judaism …. Father only
best one on yt i found so far 🤘 just keep going man!
Sadly, I have the same issue with all the ancient stories. I'm ticking over, just enjoying the ride and then, They make a song or poem about, well pure evils and you're reminded. Actual human beings not much different to myself have been suffering just the most abysmal and horrific fates throughout all history and in a lot of the world still are . . . I don't know, maybe I'm just tired today. ∆
Even more fun is when you realize that most of the soldiers doing the terrible things are also not actually that different from us and their victims. Humanizing the past reminds us of what we can be today, both good and bad.
@entirelyalive Very true. I was raised in a warzone. In Belfast during the ' troubles ' Just one of those days boss . . I'll pick it up tomorrow I'm sure. Life goes on. Slainte mo chara ∆
Assyria/Babylonia ruled the civilized world forma millenia…, america have been around for 50 years as world ruler and are moore or less lunaticks,,,, set it in a perspective,,, about other areas, well it is well known that most of the egyptian and greek ingeneers and filosofers was educated in assyria/babylonia,,,, so there was a great education system that allowed ”neighbours”… cruel is not a word that is used in politics,,,
I love me some history. Thanks OSP!
I'm sorry to have to admit this, but as someone with autism I have never heard of a more sensible reason for genocide ! Relatively, it's a damn sight better than Adam eating Eve's Apple. . .
It's Eire and the Sebetti, again ! I've heard the song before . . . ∆
* I deleted a comment / question. You answered it in the last minute, literally . Slainte !
Ok I think we need some Babylonian merch lol "kings of the universe" " I 💜 Babylon" I'm feeling very much superior in my newly adopted Nationality ? Ethnicity ? I've decided given it's ' self determined ' I'm not Irish or British, European or not European anymore, that's just noise, absurd noise. I'm Babylonian now. Lmao. See what they say when I put that on the electoral role. !
It is so cringeworthy using BCE. Do you know what calendar you are using?
BCE is a triumph and universalization of Christ, a proof that he is victorious over all secular and ungodly schemes. And if Jesus being king of the universe makes you cringe, then you have issues. www.tiktok.com/t/ZTL1wsjea/
Common Era has been in use academically for over 150 years by Jews. You see, a lot academic contributions to biblical studies come from Jews, surprisingly enough, because, "that's whose old testament you're using". Jews don't want to be forced to refer to something they don't actually believe in, you might have missed the history about that, so it's kind of cringeworthy to, you know, keep trying to make them - or other people - do it.
@@Gilgamechasaur You are quite a moron. The old testament has nothing to do with the calendar. Perhaps the Pope was a Jew?
Kings of the universe. That seems perfectly reasonable. I love Babylon ∆ know your place universe!
Love it ❤
I love that heartbreaking title.
Well great video just loved it
May I ask, why did you choose the image that is displayed in this video?
The city? It is just an AI generated something so that I could have something on the youtube video. I will probably change it as we change historical eras, but really I am going pretty much zero effort on the visuals now so that I have time for the research/story part.
@@entirelyalive I had to use multiple channels to manipulate the RUclips algorithm as a viewer just to find some different ancient history and anthropology channels. RUclips wants to show the viewers the same few channels, all the time, so for each channel I view from, I clicked "do not show videos from this channel" on the channels I already see all the time from my other accounts. That i what I had to do just to find channels like yours. Along the way, I noticed that a lot of the ancient history channels use the same style of fantasy/comic book/video game-themed art that is often AI generated. Maybe there are good reasons for it that I haven't though of, but I question if it is really a good idea. Have you considered just using a neutral blank screen if the imagery isn't important to you?
@botanybiologyandgeologyofCO My older videos did use a neutral screen and youtube promotion was about 5x worse. Actually, most of my metrics on this video are higher than my high effort vids prior to this, at least comparing the main podcast, not the video game episodes. Of course, I have only just switched to this visual format, so we will see if that holds up, but I think podcasts with an AI image and light animation might be the sweet spot for engagement right now on youtube. I don't much like it, but I have to play the game to at least some extent.
@@entirelyalive I will leave you with one more thing to consider. RUclips is also flooded with channels that don't just have AI generated art, but have AI generated scripts and AI generated voices that read them. Even something simple like a map of the location that is the topic of your podcast would be unique in this sea of AI images, from my perspective, anyway. Do whatever you think is best for your channel, though. I just want more ancient history/anthropology/science channels, et cetera, to be able to succeed in this mess of clickbait. I don't claim to have any expert knowledge.
I am uncomfortable
Modern fighters train muscle strength rather than endurance. This is due to time constraints. Take out the time limits, and muscle fighters would be at a disadvantage against endurance fighters. In other words, time constraints weaken modern fighters.
Binge. . . Feeling a little guilty for not joining, but I'm ' live-aboard ' a small sail boat for now lol I'll get hooked up with wi-fi in winter mooring shortly, God's willing, naturally.. This just feels right for ' entertainment at sea ' ( solo obviously ) . . . Slainte ! ∆
That makes perfect sense. About how they viewed the language as god given and relating it to the way we use maths was super helpful. Slainte ∆
I have no patience! Who on earth are the Babylonians ? It's absolutely mind blowing. I'm hooked.
28:11 we should try a social experiment with a strong, ethical government where everyone is provided for & happy 🤷🏼♀️
lol
20:32 "Where are you from?" "...eh..." * shrugs dejectedly * After the 100th person responds that way, it tends to stick on the map.
(Im trying to up the engagement on this video, more people should come across it. Great info.)
lol, I like it.
16:43 you just described too many global presidential candidates. We need this wisdom to remain timeless. And headed.
15:38 the other one (interpretation) also applies. 🤷🏼♀️
13:55 Sanskrit is also believed to be the "coding language" of the universe; it was also considered the language of the Gods brought with the 7 Rishis who brought technology and spirituality to the ancient Bharat people, training them into a mighty civilization. It has "Seed Syllables" that the very vibrations of which, are believed to alter Reality itself. Root Mantras are manifested through different combinations, which produce very fine- tuned results. Small world, Dr Jones!
Fascinating! I've heard of phonecian and Pelasgian language seeding ancient Greek possibly but I haven't got my head around how Sanskrit fits that picture. It's a lot to hold in such a small brain !
