Just insulate buildings better. With or without central heating that would help. Also, turn off the heaters in rooms not used with central heating, would that not save money?

IR panel heaters could be effective here, I.e. don't heat the air but the surfaces. Even with air movement you feel warm, and they can be disguised as panel doors etc.

I saved on heating for years, which was fine in my 20s. But now I have kids, and they started catching colds, so I began heating more. I'm not sure if being cold really boosts one's immune system, but I suspect the effect is minimal. Also, when a house is cold, there’s a high risk of mold spreading. I was hoping this issue would be addressed in the video. How do they manage the risk of mold due to cold in Japan? Thanks!

About the japanese having a culture of using little energy... On January first I was at a party with several USA citizens and one that had just immigrated from the USA to Portugal asked how much electricity he should get in he's new house as in the USA he didn't even knew how much he had, just knew it was enough to have everything runing at the same time and then some... We explained that it depended on the house but usually between 3.45kva and 7.5kva. Then a japanese lady explained she just had 3.45kva and asked "you need more to be able to use more stuff at the same time by the American, she just replied "No. I need to be careful. I don't need more power". We, the Portuguese European kind of seat comfortably in between the 2 mindsets but we do tend to also value energy efficiency.

Iceland has solved most heating problems with geothermal heating and good insulation because the process of heating up a space over and over again costs a lot of money and just keeping the temperature stable over a long time is more cost effective. And Iceland is a volcanic earthquake island like Japan.

I spent 3 months in Hokkaido 30 years ago, where I was very cold, as the houses out there have no/poor insolation. In Scandinavia the houses are better insolated with heated floors and air-recycling systems constantly changing the air with dry air. Insolation is a big thing here, because it reduces heating cost, reduces CO2-emission and gives a much more comfortable heating of the house.

5:04 - this is not being modest, my dear Japanese bretheren. To be used to air conditioners themselves, is luxury, a cost both on the pocket and nature. Still - maximizing using all possibilities from one thing, is definitely you culture's virtue - yet at the same time you have plastic packages, which contain plastic packages for each separate cracker :D. Truly bizarre yet a culture I wish to learn more of. 💙

I think another very important factor is that Japan (except Hokkaido) has a climate comparable to that of southern Europe, not northern Europe. Here are the average annual temperatures of a few selected cities: Stockholm: 7.5°C Sapporo: 8.5°C Munich: 9.5°C Berlin: 10.0°C London: 11.5°C New York: 12.5°C Madrid: 15.0°C Kyoto: 15.6°C Tokyo: 16.0°C Rome: 16.0°C Barcelona: 16.5°C Fukuoka: 16.5°C Los Angeles: 18.5°C Houston: 20.8°C

I'm left wondering if the use of iroris and kotatsus contributed to the Japanese cultural emphasis on being a good member of community. Being clustered so closely for so long with family members, and not really having an alternative besides being cold - or moving to another room and use up precious resources - creates a strong incentive to adopt conflict-avoidant strategies to deal with what is effectively 'cabin fever'. And in a family hierarchy, a strong inclination to defer to your elders (both parents and siblings) even when they're wrong. Is there a notable cultural difference between people who grew up in Hokkaido, who use central heating, and the rest of Japan?

Interesting, this is closer to how people have lived before modern central heating and may suit humid Japan better than dry and much colder Finland. British houses during the winter now have central heating and better insulation, but with the humidity we have big problems with condensation, mould and difficulty drying clothes without also a dehumidifier.

I love bamboo shoots! Having grown up in Kentucky, one of my favorite childhood meals was "Hot and Sour" soup from the American-Chinese buffet. I grew up in Michigan and we only heat rooms in use when possible. My understanding is Japan doesn't get quite as cold. Also, some houses in the US use wood stoves, fire places and boilers for reasons similar to Japans reasons. I rather like the boilers because you can have it keep things like bathrooms at least a little bit warmer than outside without it being the full temperature of the other rooms. My parents have a house that is boiler but also has wood stoves so you can adjust the heating to just be warm in the wood stove area by turning the boiler off and using the stove. I live in an apartment and often I don't even need to use the heating because my neighbors blast it so high😂

Central heating can be switched on and off per room, so it does not mean the whole house is heated constantly. As for efficiency, the electric heaters I see often in video's about Japan are really expensive and inefficent, or at least they would be here , compared to gas.
