This is a reminder of the importance of having enough situational awareness when visiting Japan to understand you are in another country as a guest. Instagram traveling is a poor fit in a very structured society like Japan. Go because you are interested in the culture, everything unfolds from the culture in Japan.

Thank you for watching😉 Yeah, need to look around and pay attention others are important in Japan😎

Tourists need to understand that they need to fit into the culture they are visiting, not the other way around. Why visit a country if you aren't interested in learning about the culture and history? You explained the reasons behind the unspoken rules which helps us understand why the rules exist. I agree with the unspoken rules and appreciate you explaining them.

HI 👋 Thanks again. No small talk. One ramen 😋. Don't take too much time. Don't talk. It is the easiest one😌. I can't start talking in japanese🤦‍♀️😬

I'll give you one piece of advice because you really wanna have small talk with Japanese people😎
You can judge whether they are up to having small talk with you or not by eye contact 😉 If they are not up to it, I believe they avoid eye contact shortly!
When they are fine to do it, it must be slightly longer than usual (It may be hard to notice at first, but you will see someday😘)

Thanks for explaning some manners! I listen a lot to music throughout the day, so eating with earphones is rather normal for me but I will try not to do it while visiting.

Thank you for watching😉 I know some people are doing that all day long😁
There is no correct answer so I'm not sure what's the best to be honest. Just doing best for anybody around you (Of course yourself) is important, and it's changeable the any situation😉

Thanks for letting me know, I did not know about this unspoken rule even though I've been in Japan for some time. I agree with the points 1 and 2 and i would not be watching videos, and removing my earphones when ordering anywhere. But I think I will still be wearing my earbuds while eating, knowing that I may appear to have poor manners.

      Thank you for watching😉 It's a complicated topic, isn't it?😂
You may be fine to do it as long as the stores don't ask you to stop it😁

I agree with the idea. If you're at a fast food service being polite and attentive to how the business is structured is a requirement. To me food is an experience, so helping a business make a good decision for what kind of restaurant service they want is important.
Don't like it, there are different shops!

Thank you for watching😉 The food business in Japan is so hard....Even convenience stores and frozen foods are competitors😂

Wearing earphones in any restaurant is rude anywhere in the world. 🤷

Thank you for watching😉 Oh I see! I feel the number of people wearing earphones in Japan has been increasing, even in the stores😲

@@JapanwithNao I would say that is the commenter's personal opinion. I can only speak for my the cultural acceptance in my corner of the world (my specific area of the USA). It's generally not considered rude on the whole. It's more about specific interactions. If a person is distracted BECAUSE they are listening to earphones, then it's considered rude. Just like if they have a phone out and are talking to another person when they should be ordering/answering questions.
And, of course, the acceptance will vary among generations. Even having something like a phone present will be considered rude in many generations that didn't grow up with phones, no matter whether it's affecting anyone else or not. Newer generations tend to be much more of the "if it's not affecting you, ignore it" thought.
One thing people don't often keep in mind is that some people wear headphones because of sensory processing issues. For example, my wife and son are both autistic. To keep from being overloaded by crowd noise, my wife will often keep her headphones in. Both have misophonia, which is an extreme sensitivity to chewing and slurping noises. As you can imagine, headphones really them be able to tolerate eating next to someone else.
All that said, it makes perfect sense that the expectations are what they are in Japanese ramen shops.

i only agree with rule which says .. that eating ramen while listening to the music .. would make other customers waiting too long .. other than that it’s ok 😃

Some people are selfish, some are not. It's that easy. Nao can't say it that way. (^.^) I can, and I'm IN Tokyo. Starbuck's (even in Japan) will allow Customers to sit all day (and order nothing). That can contribute to confusion. Which businesses let you stay and which don't? But it is not as difficult as many make it. LOOK AROUND. If you see a line, then be nice and let others get their meal (you've had yours). Nao prefers tatemae. I prefer honne. Tatemae gets more "likes". Honne saves time. (^.-)

      @JapanwithNao  5 месяцев назад

Thank you for watching😉 I may not be able to be Honne (Honest) at some points, True!haha
But I'm sure I can say sitting at Starbucks all day long without ordering much is no way😆
