Hi! Tui Ruwhiu here. I'm a boomer who has surfed on and off for 50+ years. I've learned that there's not much out there for the older surfer. So here's my contribution. wavecomms - Views for the older surfer.
Mid Length Or Not?
More traditional shapers say mid lengths start at 6'8", but a lot of surfboard manufacturers are calling shorter boards mid lengths. I scope the range to see what everybody is up to and who and what they are suited to.

Love these videos mate.
Appreicated.
Beautiful. Cheers from the other side of the world in Lisboa.
Thanks. Enjoyed your city, too. Didn't get any good surf while I was there, though.
Nice concise explanation
Hope you found it useful.
Loved the discussion Imo I tend to ride the following based on conditions: Mushy Waves (small/med/big) - Fishes (I like quads)/Eggs/Everyday mids/Twin mids Punchy/Hollow waves (small) - Grovelers, Fishes Punchy/Hollow waves (medium/big) - Thruster shortboards I always struggled with "higher performance" mids with more rocker and more pulled in outlines. For small or mushy waves they weren't as maneuverable, harder to duck dive, and didn't paddle as good as fishes. They didn't have as good glide for small waves as everyday or twin mids. For larger waves, I could see more of a use case for them but then again if the waves are good I'd rather just be on a shortboard or a step up if its actually huge. The one place I could seem them being extremely fun is a clean lined up point break, but I feel like any board would go well in those conditions
I have a range of boards for different conditions like you, but different boards and types, obviously. I've just bought a higher performance mid. Still waiting for it to come. It's meant to work better in small waves rather than bigger surf--I'd ride one of my high performance shortboard thrusters anyway when the waves are over 4ft.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms right on, looking forward to a future video on your thoughts on it! I always had a challenge with those boards in small waves
#rideverything ! Great video! As for categorizing depends on one's height and the length of their smaller and bigger boards...if it falls in the middle and has a rounded nose it's a mid-length (or fun board).
Cheers. Love the concept, but what if you have only one or two boards?
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms Unimaginable. 😂
😭
For me coming from shortboard land, I tend to prefer "performance mid's" or whatever that means. Currently been riding: 6'8 Chilli Mid Strength as a quad - honestly an amazing board goes in anything just about from shin gutless to double overhead. For one year I kept coming back to it calling it the "Secret Sauce". I then got the 6'4 Chilli Middy as a quad - the small brother of the Mid Strength, love this board and ended up being on it more instead .... During this time I got a 6'9 Stacey Ohlson Twin - this is a performance mid length and it literally goes from the smallest waves to as big as I am prepared to ride .... I like this even better than the Chilli boards. I got addicted to it and rode it everywhere. I liked coming to the beach with two boards. Rode the shorter board for an hour or so and when feeling tired I swapped it for this board to extend the surf. I liked it so much I got myself a 6'5 Stacey Ohlson Twin recently. This feels like an everything board. I might eye out some bigger boards now above 7 foot to add something to the quiver to teeny tiny days ... A key thing for me is the width, too wide and I was struggling to handle / duck dive the board in bigger or rather wilder surf with lots of water moving around .... That's why I keep coming back to the Stacey Ohlson twin ....
Lots of great info there. Thanks.
Really liking my Cape Collective 7'0.... Made in Byron...not sure if available in NZ or around other places. Great board. Also got a CI Mid that I never use. My first mid was a McTavish Carver years ago...fun board
Thanks for the info. Don't believe we have Cape Collective here. Seems like that's the board for you.
Right on, nice waves!
Cheers.
when I saw your first riding, I just smash the subscribe burton! 😎
Appreciate it.

Ha! :-)
That guy who blatantly dropped in on you what an absolute clown even better we all got to see his face while doing it . Awesome video by the way ripping uncle 🤙🤙
Cheers.
My experience with Channel Islands shortboards is that they’re typically pretty high performance and sensitive/reactive boards. Not the easiest to surf.
The CI happy Every Day is certainly performance oriented with its attributes, but I personally didn't find it hard to surf. I've yet to try it in a range of wave sizes and conditions, but it does seems to ft into that slot of the daily driver. I'll know more a couple of months from now.
Pops is ripping. Those conditions at my end would be a great day.🤙
:-) Conditions were lovely - offshore, with peaks up and down the beach. Waves were small and gutless, unfortunately.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms but for us beautiful you guys are blessed 🙌
what is it a 6'1 ? ...I got the 6'2 version..its pretty versatile, im closer to 85 kgs and my 6'2 Happy Everyday is 37 litres ,,,I can surf it in small or big and it has the volume to still catch all wave sizes even when in a 4'3 steamer. Even though looks like a meat axe it still moves around like a performance shortboard......Id love to try a JS daily driver and move down one or two litres into an easy rider Monsta 10 or Xero gravity but not in a rush as dont expect life changing difference. I can surf the Happy everyday from 0.5 feet to overhead and a bit,,,,,,,,if gets bigger I got an old sweetspot 2.0 6'8 to use as a step up. Actually what were your 4 other daily driver options ?
Stock 6'1" x 2 5/8 x 20.5 at 35.1l. The other options were the Pyzel Mini Ghost, Lost Uber Driver XL, JS Xero Gravity and the Sharpeye Inferno 72. I also liked the look of the Xero Gravity, but it seems a touch more high performance and I was after a standard daily driver.
2:10 what a jerk…annoys the shit out of me why ppl cant just follow the frikin rules
🎉🎉 happy every day compet the shadow xl? the happy every day need good amount of wave friends tells me
My Shadow XL is really for 4 - 8ft. The CI Happy Every Day is meant to be for 2 - 6ft. A bit of a cross over, but really different boards for different conditions. More likely to ride my Shadow in 6ft, but won't really know until I try the CI HED in surf that size.
I hope I still surf like you when I'm 60!!! I watched your twinnie vid, What has been your favorite twin+trailer board? I've hated twin fins every time I've tried them but I have been considering giving them another go on a 2+1 setup
I only have one set: Futures Fins T1 Honeycomb Twin Fin 2 + 1. Neutral template, Medium, Fiberglass/Honeycomb. Very happy with them. Always use with the trailer for stability.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms what 2+1 boards do you like them the best in?
Missed this till now. Sorry bout that. Only use them in my RNF96.
Ripping!
Cheers.
Congrats for the video. I started surfing in 1976, I did good for a long time, but age is geting a problem know, at 63 yo (back hurts!!). But is nice seeing not so young guys stll performing.
Cheers. Just gotta keep trying.

great wave and looks like you synced with the CI Happy every day really fast! Also, wow nerves of steel at 2:10 - looked like a close call!
Yea, felt good under the feet. Re 2:10 - he knew I was there but wouldn't get off. Knew he was going to cut back so went close so he had nowhere to go.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms thats greedy of him :)
Nice lil surf on that board bro, your first wave showed how loose it was. I like that loose feel of a squash or square tail. Even though it was small you could still get on rail near the pocket. Cant wait to see what it surfs like in bigger surf. What sized fins did you have on?
Had the JJF Signature Techflex - Neutral, Large. They worked good but will try same fins but Medium to see what they're like. I'm looking forward to trying it out in bigger surf for sure.
@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms that's awesome bro. I haven't experimented much with fins but definitely want to get large, cos I'm a bit of a bigger fulla I'm hoping I won't slip out as much on my bottom turns, but I love how loose it is on the lip. Look forward to more content brother, love your mahi.
@@logantaueki9149 I'm 180cm, 82kgs, so not small, not big. I like stiff fins so fiberglass suits me best so far. Cheers!
@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms yeah I float somewhere between 100-110kg. Might be 95kg after a toothache lol.
@@logantaueki9149 :-)
Great vid. I surfed east. Wasn’t as clean but had beach to myself 😂
Thanks. There were uncrowded spots at the beach, too.
Great video mate 👍
Thanks
Thanks.
Nice one bro, I was looking at this board also, as i ride a 6'0 around 34-35L. Look forward to the next vid of you surfing it.
Video coming shortly. Keen to try again as it's showing potential.
Great video and you are very inspiring 👍
Cheers!
Does it have a v or is it a high stringer? Either way, looks like a utilitarian board. Hope you enjoy it.
You may be right with the high stringer. After first surf yesterday it could well prove to be a good one. Just need some bigger waves to test it on.
Idgaf I love my 9'0 Catchsurf Log and my 6'6 Catchsurf Skipper. I've been on 25ft faces on my 9'0 Log and I 12ft faces on my 6'6 Skipper. The only downside is they waterlog if you don't prep them properly and duck diving is almost impossible. But in terms of surfing = they're awesome.
Sounds like you found the right boards for you.
I would also say don't overlook "Cheap popout" type boards for non-HPSB designs. My favourite board ATM for 2-4ft is an EPS Aloha Twin D designed by James Woods of Lennox head but made in Thailand and sold at a discount.
Not an area I've looked at but good you pointed it out.
I have the Red Tiger in round tail - short board. Ive found 5ft is about its limit. Im 6'1 & the board is 6'3.
Good info. As mentioned, I found the squash tail a handful in 6ft Wilkes Pass on the bottom turns. It did though have the speed I needed there. Another guy I know has the round tail here and says it works well for him in overhead waves. I'll be interested to see how my new one goes. I'm 5'10" at 82kgs and my old and new Red Tiger the same lengths at 6'1".
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms yeh I'm 6'1, weigh 94kg. My opinion - with the wide point sitting just behind half way, I think you're better off with a bit of length (size up) with the Red Tiger. And you're spot on, wether it's 2ft or 5ft it definitely needs power. The board goes so good in the pocket.
Anything longer than 6'1" doesn't work for me in small waves. I've got a 6'2" Shadow and find its too long for 4ft and under. I've got a 6'4" Ghost and only take it out on days over 6ft.
Surfboards are something very personal. The Pros' boards are developed to suit their surfing style and although several Pros use the same model, their individual boards have slight differences so the surfer feels comfortable and connected to the board. I have performance boards that I can catch and ride more waves then my everyday or small waves boards. I feel more comfortable when paddling and connected when riding them. I prefer boards with more rocker than a flat bottom, even on small waves has long the waves have push and pocket.
Agree, they are personal. And the waves you surf them in are important, too. You've obviously found the boards you like in the waves you surf.
Im not buying it. Cold with no decent barrel section. Good 2 times a year at best. Add in grumpy locals and no parking. Give me Bukit any day.
@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms you nailed it right on the head with your introduction I’ve been running my 5‘2“ fire wire boards in nearly all conditions weak small good bad and at different beach breaks. Some point breaks some Reef breaks some mushy weak point brakes. At times some waves I would miss and it was my own error, but also it would be high tide and the wave would have a backwash in it My main problem was starting to lose my fun in crowded rolling point break waves Hence, why, I said you nailed it on the head nowadays our beaches in Hawaii are getting so populated and so overwhelming crowded and you don’t see much short boarders these days it seems these crowds are opting for the easy way out and they all just use glider, long boards or huge standup paddle boards, and that my friend is where the frustration comes in for us short borders. Don’t get me wrong. I’ll still get my wave count but nowhere near as a standup paddleboard or a long boarder. Most times it feels like we leave the good sets for them and we just pick up the crumbs. A buddy of mines just turned me on two weeks ago when I was on my way, looking to buy a new board and he told me I should get it into Mid lengths. I wasn’t too certain about them. I thought they were just like Longboards and meant for the not so good Surfer or technically old man’s but let me tell you my perception was totally wrong. I am 100% a believer in mid lengths as of two weeks ago. Originally, I wanted to buy and order the dark arts construction album, Vesper that Margo was killing it on, but my buddy told me not to spend that much money for my first mid length He helped me look on Facebook marketplace for great deals on Mid lengths and that’s where we came across the seaside and beyond in thunderbolt red 6‘8“ and I seen reviews on it but still not enough reviews that I expected since the board been around for quite some time. Conclusion, I am 100% happy I can now sit outside with long borders that extra 20 L gives me the paddle abilities to paddle battle with longboard outback on a point brake rolling wave I no longer have to sit right under the peak. It feels great to catch waves early on, and I get to fade my turns and set up my canvas for the rest of the wave. I would never believe if you told me would’ve been able to rip that board just as great as my 5‘2“ performance boards. You just really have to get one to believe it for yourself. I’m so 100% happy I did and I constantly thank my friend for it. Not only because he saved me money on making another short board purchase that would’ve ended up in frustration. But he saved me from a lot of grumpy sessions. I finally found my stoke again. Sidenote, I can ride Longboards all day and I do at times, but they so darn boring if you grew up short boarding performance, surfing, all your life, then you would understand. There’s only so much time you can walk up to the nose on your longboard into cross steps with turning around and acting silly because you’re just happy to be in the water, but when the waves turn on just the littlest. Believe I’ll be on my mid length. I now will save my 5‘2“ board for hollow Barrels or more powerful, surf days. Aloha and I hope this comment helps someone the way I needed it at that time I’m going to help you out and subscribe to your channel because I think you’re doing a great job Mahalo 🤙🏽💯🌎😎🏄🏽♂️🏝️
On the mark again Tui 👌
Cheers!
Great info, especially about the marketing!! Glad you finished it off with trying ya local shaper, the more of us that get into doing so in NZ the better. Who better to know about our waves.
@@azzag2414 Thanks. Local shapers have a tough time, particularly because of the marketing of the big companies.

Hated twin fins til I brought a Chris Christensen.... 10months later and a couple fin change ups... not sure if I'll go back to thruster, ever. Nice info on the clip, thanks
I've looked at Christenson's a lot. They seem to be winning fans, including you. What fins have you found work for you on your Christenson? And which Christenson model did you get?
I have been using the Rob Machaddo Keels for a year or so now, wouldn't change back.
Honeycomb vs Fibreglass. What makes them feel better for you?
They are fiberglass to the best of my knowledge. I find the keels just seem to work, don't really know why
@@stuartmillar8264 says they are honeycomb on the FireWire website. Always good when you find something that works for you.
I use the MR’s twin + trailer in my BV2 and love it. But when I ride it as an thruster just can’t find the right combo so I just stick with 2+1
@@NCsurfer607 My T1 Twin + Trailer in BV2 was perfect. Did try JJF Signature Thruster Large but to be honest wasnt the right board for bigger days. I creased it in 4 -5ft surf. Had a TwinTech, which I think is weak construction, so sold it. Really wanted it shorter than the 6'2" I had with the same volume but couldn't get it without playing with the dims too much.

Pivot, Twin Plus 1 or 3.0 Thruster?
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms pivot concave foil 2=1 set but way better without the trailer
Greg webbers new long skinny twins look really weird but are apparently amazing. There is an article in the latest surfers journal about Greenoughs bendy fin theory that supports Webbers reasoning for the performance of said fins.
try a set of SOAR MMBT G10 they are the best I've tried and I have tried a lot of them... I made a few videos comparing them.
Superficially they look the same but cant is 1 degrees different at 6.5. Can't get Soar here and they are certainly expensive when you convert. Also sold out on their website. :-)
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms I might have caused that - oops! The Soar are also G10 which is quite stiff and responsive. If you have not already tried the BMT I liked them a lot. I prefer them over AMK.
The reason you hate them is because you have probably been riding garbage boards.or your not very good.
I find keels or large base twin fins hold more if you don’t like the skatey feel with your tail slipping when you give it a push
Yep. That's why I like the AMK's.
twinzer bro
Interesting take on a board. Don't think I'll be going there, but thanks for the thought.
I think most twin fins have probably to flat of a rocker which is fine for slow fat waves I have the MF twin fin from DHD it has heaps of rocker and it's not skatey at all and you can ride without thinking it's a twin fin the down side is you need quality waves with push . It's not a grovel board at all.
Good to know. Cheers.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms side note you can now get Mark Richards twin fins in futures they are a great twin plus trailer set
Love the video Tui, very insightful and easy to digest. I just picked up a 7’0 45.5L Chilli Mid strength myself. Would love to see more videos!
Thanks. And would love to hear what you think about your Mid Strength after you've ridden it for awhile.
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms will do 👍
Enjoyed the video mate. FCS 2 only needs one screw in the back part of the plug and you won’t lose any fins (except of course if the rip the entire plug out but that would be the same with Futures)😜
Thanks. The one screw to keep FCS2 fins in matches the one screw needed with Futures, and negates the whole snap in snap out premise. And then when you talk to ding regairers, you find that they fix more than twice the number of FCS2 fin boxes in comparison to Futures fin boxes. This from one local ding repairer: Fin plug repair tally March to May 22. FCS2 - 23 FCS1 - 7 FCS Fusion - 1 Futures - 7
@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms thanks for the detail , guess futures really are the future 😜
