For me coming from shortboard land, I tend to prefer "performance mid's" or whatever that means. Currently been riding: 6'8 Chilli Mid Strength as a quad - honestly an amazing board goes in anything just about from shin gutless to double overhead. For one year I kept coming back to it calling it the "Secret Sauce". I then got the 6'4 Chilli Middy as a quad - the small brother of the Mid Strength, love this board and ended up being on it more instead .... During this time I got a 6'9 Stacey Ohlson Twin - this is a performance mid length and it literally goes from the smallest waves to as big as I am prepared to ride .... I like this even better than the Chilli boards. I got addicted to it and rode it everywhere. I liked coming to the beach with two boards. Rode the shorter board for an hour or so and when feeling tired I swapped it for this board to extend the surf. I liked it so much I got myself a 6'5 Stacey Ohlson Twin recently. This feels like an everything board. I might eye out some bigger boards now above 7 foot to add something to the quiver to teeny tiny days ... A key thing for me is the width, too wide and I was struggling to handle / duck dive the board in bigger or rather wilder surf with lots of water moving around .... That's why I keep coming back to the Stacey Ohlson twin ....

    Loved the discussion
Imo I tend to ride the following based on conditions:
    Mushy Waves (small/med/big) - Fishes (I like quads)/Eggs/Everyday mids/Twin mids
Punchy/Hollow waves (small) - Grovelers, Fishes
    Punchy/Hollow waves (medium/big) - Thruster shortboards
I always struggled with "higher performance" mids with more rocker and more pulled in outlines. For small or mushy waves they weren't as maneuverable, harder to duck dive, and didn't paddle as good as fishes. They didn't have as good glide for small waves as everyday or twin mids. For larger waves, I could see more of a use case for them but then again if the waves are good I'd rather just be on a shortboard or a step up if its actually huge. The one place I could seem them being extremely fun is a clean lined up point break, but I feel like any board would go well in those conditions

I have a range of boards for different conditions like you, but different boards and types, obviously. I've just bought a higher performance mid. Still waiting for it to come. It's meant to work better in small waves rather than bigger surf--I'd ride one of my high performance shortboard thrusters anyway when the waves are over 4ft.

@@tui_ruwhiu_wavecomms right on, looking forward to a future video on your thoughts on it! I always had a challenge with those boards in small waves

#rideverything ! Great video! As for categorizing depends on one's height and the length of their smaller and bigger boards...if it falls in the middle and has a rounded nose it's a mid-length (or fun board).
