The aircraft is the Macchi MB-326H, the majority of which were produced, under licence, at the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation's Fisherman's Bend (Melbourne) factory.

      Craig, yes we did still have Mirages then. These Hornets were the first ones the RAAF received in 1985. The last Mirage wasn't retired from squadron flying until 1988. This deployment at TVL was of Mirages and Hornets. I took the video.

I pulled out my phone & looked up one of our graduating photos … “Not this Dave Barnes ???” I asked. “Oh my God … yes … that’s him !!!” She replied. What a small world it is Al. Hope you & your family are all doing extremely well. All’s great on my end. Cheers once again mate.

    So the older jets had exhaust fume trails ?

    • @rodentflyingfilms7868
      @rodentflyingfilms7868 8 месяцев назад

      Yes, the Mirage had a smoke modification that could be fitted as required (not fitted for normal ops). Smoke oil was contained in the gunbay fuel tank (where the gunpack was normally fitted) and fed through an external pipe along the fuselage to the engine exhaust. The heat of the jet efflux would turn the oil to smoke. The pilot controlled the oil flow with the switch that normally transferred fuel out of the gunbay tank. The RAAF F-18s were not fitted with smoke.

    That window in Canberra, was the window of a beauracrat that had advised that the F111s be retired. The F18F that flies now is less capable than the F111, cheaper though. To replace the F111 they needed to replace them 3 to 1 to maintain capability, they replaced them 1 to 1.
