I remember seeing Mirages flying over my parents house in the 70's and 80's. They were such an awsome sight, sleek design and super fast. There's two good examples on display at Williamtown fighter world.
Awesome video! I remember our family stopping at Williamtown when I was a kid and one mirage did at least 3 touch n go’s pulling up into low level dark cloud basically doing loops through the cloud then landing again it was just incredible
Yes, the Mirage had a smoke modification that could be fitted as required (not fitted for normal ops). Smoke oil was contained in the gunbay fuel tank (where the gunpack was normally fitted) and fed through an external pipe along the fuselage to the engine exhaust. The heat of the jet efflux would turn the oil to smoke. The pilot controlled the oil flow with the switch that normally transferred fuel out of the gunbay tank. The RAAF F-18s were not fitted with smoke.
