- On the occasion of the Fighter Reunion at RAAF Base Williamtown, Australia, on 13 Feb 1986, SQNLDR Bruce Hartwich (RIP) flies the Mirage low-level aerobatic display. The double-twinkle roll at the end took 2.44 seconds: ~295° per second! The maximum roll rate of the Mirage 3 was around 480° per second (with stick full deflection), but the flight manual limit was 300°/sec in the clean configuration. The twinkle roll done in this video by Bruce was brilliant, with no wobbles, and a perfect stop the right way up.
As a sixteen year old in the CAC Engineering Drawing Office in early 1962. I applied the protective edging to all the French drawing vellums sent to us from SNECMA. These were all the drawings for the Atar 09C turbine engine that powered this unbelievably fast machine.
I was on 37 Mirage Course in 1979... Bit removed from your day but was so impressed with the professional approach of ground crew and all involved, really appreciate your comments... Everyone contributed, and those behind the scenes were truly appreciated...
Such a beauty. Small, light weight and cheap. It has all the basics right.
Nice and loud, like I remember. Cheers
I watched countless videos of the mighty MIII as well as real ones during +20 years but in this video this is the very first time I noticed the supplemental air scoope for the engine on the side of the aircraft opening. (ref 3:21) This is a fully free articulated scoope that automatically open when the engine needs more air by mean of air suction. (when forward speed becomes to slow to give enough air to the engine, the engine at idle create a suction that open the scoope and thus gives the engine the air it needs.) KISS design perfectly executed.
Those aircraft where all balls. Just like a 1970's mussel car compared to today's cars.
would put the f18 hornet to shame jim !! these were beautiful love them !!!
used to see them while surfing at Bar Beach hurtling back to base at 200'
