FATRIDE
Добавлен 30 дек 2021
Hello,
Welcome to FATRIDE my name is Tim I'm 58 years old and I live in Michigan. I have been riding/racing something with two wheels since I was a kid, from BMX, motocross, MTB, and road. I would like to share some of the things I have leaned along the way.
In 2012 I had a full stroke and once I was back to walking again I used cycling as part of my recovery. One year after the stroke I raced a MTB national. To get my fitness back I used a cycling personal coach and used a coaching program for numerous years after do to it working so well for me. I truly just love cycling and the energy it brings. After the stroke my fitness levels returned but my timing and coordination was just not the same. It was close but in the following years I crashed more than I had crashed in my whole cycling life.... My last crash scared me. It was hard enough and bad enough I knew something had to change. FAT biking hit at the perfect time ! I'm totally addicted.

Let's discover which one works for you. Rigid carbon or suspension fork?Advantages / disadvantages
During testing I was surprised by the differences. Again, my testing was done on dry MTB trails. If you are looking to just go out and ride either one is great. It really comes down to what your MTB trail condition is.
This video I go into advantages of both and disadvantages of both.
When I first started the test I was on the rough MTB trail and the results was clear…. MTB trails without zero second thought - suspension!
The second part of the test was on smooth MTB trails and I couldn’t believe it! In my head I just assumed that the suspension would be go to. After one lap I was just blown away. The Trek Farley with the carbon fork rocked! It was light, quick, and responded amazingly. It...

Discover the benefits of owning a fat bike

I just happen to try a fat bike I had no idea what a great chose it was going to be. I just thought fat biking was just a fun recovery thing to minimize risk while recovering from an MTB accident. What I found changed my riding from that point on. If you would have asked me about fat biking early on I would of said something like It looks like a cute fun sort of thing to do. At that time, I had...

What’s your inseam length ? The big iron is size xl correct ? Nice to solve the problem with the crank ;-)
@@rasmusredfire2667 I’m 6’2” and have a 321/2 - 33 inseam. Yes it is a XL. I’m right on the bubble on riding an L or a XL With the large the seat post is out a mile…..
@@fatride sorry for late reply....we are exactly the same numbers...what about the reach on the xl big iron ? i did have a xl mukluk and that bike did not fit me really well......happy trails fat friend
@@rasmusredfire2667 This is what it looks like by the numbers. TT” Trek (L) 24.84 Trek (XL) 25.35 Big Iron (XL) 25.98 I just run a shorter stem. I’m also long waisted….. I wish you could ride both :) I’m more comfortable on the XL Big Iron
Yummmmmmy
Just tell me this please- you switched from L frame to XL, am I right? My Farley got stolen and it seems syrreal to get it back, but I am on the edge of buying new one, the 2024 model this Lava. But I managed to wait long enough, so all the L frames are gone, it is only XL. Did you notice any major differences between L and XL, while starting to ride? How tall are you, helps me to decide?🙏. Is the XL frame not getting on your hands, is the reach ok?
@@ErkiKurvits Hello, bummer about it being stolen! I’m 6’2 33 inseam. For me the large the seat post was at its max limit… the top tube was too short. This is for me though… Going to the XL was a perfect fit for me. Please don’t hesitate to ask questions I know how hard it is to make the choice. As far as the ride itself I liked the little longer wheelbase best. Again any other questions just ask I still have both
Happy Birthday!

Must have found the happy middle ground with my Wren fork on my 2018 Mukluk…. Keep the Schwalbe Jumbo Jims at 9 PSI so i am not getting battered around with higher PSIs (especially in the tail) and I haven’t noticed any self steer or squirm …. Good to be back out on the trails for sure 👍
I totally agree it’s great to be back on the trails! That’s the key, finding the psi and ride for you :) The higher the psi the faster the roll.. but there is consistency…… RIDEFAT and have a great weekend

I haven’t had the chance to try that one It looks way cool?
Hahahahaha me too! I raced bmx and downhill for a long time. Once I rode a fat bike I was hooked and now have 3 and even bought the wife one and she loves it. Riding mostly all the same trails, jumps, drops and chutes I did on regular mtn bike. I’m never going back to a regular mtn bike ether
We must be brothers from different mothers :) I'm still working on the wife and daughter though :) Thanks for watching. RIDEFAT and have a great weekend
I have a full-suspension Framed Montana and use it year-round. Don't really need the suspension in the snow, but in the summer it makes ripping downhill too much fun!!
What a great story! Thanks for sharing RIDEFAT and have a great week
Fat bikes are so versatile. I can ride my fat bike where I can't ride my other bikes. I can also ride my fat bike where I can ride my other bikes, although not so efficiently.
I'm with you on your statement! Thanks for watching. RIDEFAT and have a great night
Had a fat bike. Just felt it's slower on the ups and less capable on the downs. And the steering is just bad. I'm Almost 55. I don't think fat bikes are for me.
Everyone has got to find what works for them :) I needed to slow my roll so it works great for me. Thanks for watching Have a great day
@@fatride absolutely. Now i spend my time riding a specialized Enduro and a Levo. All depends on how I'm feeling. Bottom line is. Just ride. Doesn't matter what type of bike you like. Just find something that will keep you on the trails.
@@robp6021 I like - Just ride! Have a nice day
I love my fat bike. My local trails are plagued with sand and roots (and often, mud.). Throw in snowy winters here, and going fat has really expanded the quantity AND the quality of my riding experience. BUT ...I gotta say ...all your reasons for "switching" are basically because you were taking biking too seriously. You could have simply opted out of racing and 90% of your "reasons" would be gone. That's not the bike. That was you. I am glad you are enjoying biking again. Personally I will hang on to my hard tail mtb and my fattie, and ride whichever looks to be the most fun given the trail/conditions/my mood. Its important to ride what makes you smile - "comparison is the thief of joy" whether it is who can ride the fastest, who can land the most dangerous jump, or who has the most expensive bike. It is supposed to be FUN.
Hello, I had been racing since the beginning… I raced BMX and motocross as a kid so when I ride my brain just goes into that mode…. The fat bike just slows me down. I totally respect your opinion. Thanks for watching and your comment RIDEFAT and have a nice night
Im 49 and have a fatbike (Canyon Dude) a enduro/trail bike and a Cyclocross (it’s more like a gravel bike, with bosses and 40 mm tires) . Will never ever get an XC bike, I don’t know what I would use it for. Going fast off-road on a twitchy and unforgiving bike without wearing knee pads is too dangerous at my age.
Sounds like you have a great combination of bikes! The Canyon dude is a sweet bike. Thanks for watching the video. RIDEFAT and have a nice Sunday
I have a fat bike for winter riding but mountain bike all the way during the other seasons - I’m 57 - and hope to be at until I hit the grave - even if at 80 and beyond. Please dear Lord. I love it! Plus, the front and rear suspension is awesome - easier in the body
I’m with you I want to be be riding to the end. Thanks for watching the video. Breakout the fat bike this summer for a ride :) RIDEFAT and have a great day.
I got my first mtb in the late 80s (traded a fully euipped aquarium for it) and fell in love with it. Had several others since then. Got a fatty in 2020 on a whim and am not going back.
:) Love your story. Thanks for watching the video. RIDEFAT and have a great weekend
I’m 50 so you’ve got a couple years ahead of me. I raced professional motocross for 10 years. After 9 nine surgeries including 4 ACL’s and countless broken bones I can agree that the passion to keep the envelope never goes away even after injury’s. I love my Farley 9.8 for a few months here in northern Illinois but besides it sits in the corner alone while I ride the rest of my fleet.
I did motocross also. Yeah life without scabs and something on the mend was rare… Getting older im finding I don’t bounce back as fast… But like you I still crave it. The fat bike slows the speeds down a bit :) Breakout the 9.8 this summer for a ride :) thank you for watching the video RIDEFAT and have a great weekend
How do you experience the difference between the Farleys you have and the big iron ? And what size did you get :-) happy trails
Hello, The carbon frame (Farley) is light and super responsive but you feel everything. The Big iron absorbs alot I really like both. Longer rides the Big Iron. If I want fast and a light touch Farely 9.6 RIDEFAT and have a nice weekend
I prefer my TREK FARLEY over my other bikes strictly for the fun factor. It's like comparing a MONSTER TRUCK verse a compact CHEVY S-10
:) I’m with you! RIDEFAT and have a great night
I had a driver look at me and proceed to run over my front tire. Then he offered me 20 bucks for a brand new road bike
YIKES!! I’ve had friends say I have the right away and just blasted the intersection….. I’m glad you didn’t get hurt
Famous companies no longer produce fat bikes with less demand. We have no choice but to buy Chinese.'Fatboy' was very good.
You’re right, there is getting to be less and less manufactures carrying them in the line up. Thanks for checking out the video RIDEFAT and have a great night
I fucking love my fat bike!!!! Seriously, my wife is concerned. LOL!!! We didn't have good winter season here in New Brunswick Canada but hoping next winter will be better. That said, I do ride mine year around.
I love hearing people loving their fat bikes! I’m definitely a fat bike nut :) One of my goals is to fat bike in Canada. Thanks for checking the video out. RIDEFAT and have a great night.
Great channel, I'm 56 and we are a lot alike
Brothers from different mothers :) Thanks for the compliment! I’m trying to share some of my experiences and have a little fun. Have great day
I have a similar setup. How do you like the carbon fork for winter ?
For me the bike is lighter so at slower speeds it’s a quicker to respond. When riding in snow I have the tire psi lower so it helps not feeling every jolt and jab…. When I ride it on the road I’ll push the tire psi to 12.5 psi this helps the tire roll huge! Don’t hesitate to ask questions. I’ll be straight up with you. RIDEFAT and have a great week.
After 40 years of biking I change to Fat bikes I never go back to regular bikes, fat bikes are the best. I have 5 of then and I ride Every day all year round, If you go fat you never go back.🤣
We are brothers from different mothers :) I love hearing this! RIDEFAT and have a great weekend
I don't think they are fading away and more tied to the decline in sales of bikes overall. Post COVID, people are getting back to whatever they did before. Or, they do not have any money left to spend with ever increasing costs of everything. Non related question: Which video editing software are you using?
Lets see where fat bike are in a couple years :) I'm just using IMovie and CapCut. If you have any questions on either just let me know. I'm not great at either one but I use them daily....
Its just getting started
I like your thinking :) RIDEFAT and a great weekend
What pressure you are running sir ?
Good morning, For the street/road I’ll just pump them up until tight for better roll. I’m riding the road tonight. I’ll check the actual psi and get back to you.
If the tire psi is low your roll speed is horrible….
@@fatride thanks - I've put a deposit down on the exact same bike you have & before I test ride it I need to ask them to put the right pressure in for street/pavement riding. I can always drop the pressure when I hit the muddy trails.
@@robertsmuggles6871 With the 4.5” tires on the road 12.5 psi. 3.8” tires around 13 psi These pressures are high but it will make a huge rolling difference. I have been riding these pressures for a zillion miles on the road. That’s awesome about the bike! Any questions just let me know. RIDEFAT and have a great day
@@fatride thank you very much - it ships with the 4.5 barbegazi so I'll ask them to put in 12.5. I've been on plus size tyres {3"} for the last few years. My daily ride is 3 miles road then 5 miles of forest, farm tracks, bog, farmland, flood plains and broken pavement - then back again [includes 1200 feet of climbing & a bit of rocky downhill] - this year's flooding and mud has been so bad I am finally ready to look at going FAT. what tool do you need for that?
Went from a full squish to a rigid fatty and will never go back. I do a lot of street riding (not many trails in my area) and had a mechanic ask if I wanted to look into some fat street tires for less resistance. I said, dude, I'm on a fat bike that weighs over 35 pounds, I'm not too concerned about resistance.😅
You are awesome. I use my dirt tires on the street also
Yo you should check out the RSD sergeant it’s a mid-fat bike that fit 27.5x4.0

Love my fat bike for my winter beater. Other wise I prefer my trail bike it just more fun if you like more challenging riding

I started on motorcycles years ago. I got rear ended by a distracted driver while at a dead stop and that killed my passion for riding. After a year or so of mental and physical recovery I bought a sheng milo mx02s as a way to get back on two wheels. I loved it! Then a year later I decided to get serious about fat biking and bought a canyon dude cf7. I ride both year round and I am as fit as I was in my high school days as a result! By the way love the channel!
A) I’m so happy you’re alive and back to something with two wheels! B) I was in an accident in 2012 and ended up having a full stroke. Up to that point I was big into MTB racing. Once I could walk again I wanted to ride and this was when I was introduced to fat biking. Once I was mostly recovered everyone thought I would go back to MTB… I was having so much fun I never looked back. Again I’m happy you’re doing well. Thank you for the nice comment and watching!
