thanks Steve, this is a real eye opener and a worry as a collector. i think this also applies to unsealed records that have not been listened to in years. i recently listened to ELP's Tarkus after maybe 40 years and when i took it out of the sleeve, the vinyl was kind of marbled, there were kind of sweat marks all over it. i gave it a good clean with a quality vinyl cleaner and listened to it. sadly it was making a lot of noise thruout (the vinyl was near mint, no scratches, nothing). is this also caused by off-gassing, have you come across this on open records before? any recommendation? i am afraid that this might have also happened to many others i have not listened to in years and there are hundreds...

Historically records were not sealed in the UK. Record companies and shops just didn't do it here. Someone might be able to clarify but I have a memory of some records in the 80s being sealed. I think that might have been solely a large chain store though obviously trying to prevent customers from damaging them in the racks. Possibly Our Price or Virgin, don't think it was HMV. That's my memory anyway. You see the occasional 80s lp in shrink but it's incredibly rare. We've had sealed records here since the early 00s now as they're mainly pressed in Europe. 😂 I always get a kick out of people minding your own business, not their own. Some of those comments were well thought out and intelligent, but the ridiculous ones are truly ridiculous. I’ve been a collector for over 30 years, and like you, I also sell records and have been for over 20 years, but buy more. Way more. I’ve been a buyer / seller on Discogs for like 13 or 14 years. There’s of course no way we could’ve seen this resurgence coming, and when I think of certain records I sold say 15 years ago vs what people are willing to pay now, there’s a part of me that thinks, f*ck! 😂 Whatcha gonna do…. Can’t live regretting what didn’t happen but rather remembering the good things that actually did. Thanks, Steve. Great vid, man.

The original UK copies of Wish You Were Here sell for ridiculous amounts of money if they're still sealed, so it's incidental if the LP is damaged by the inner sleeve, as no-one in their right mind would find one and break the seal. It's better to play one that was opened when it was first released.

I’ve seen this happen and not impact play, and I’ve seen it have major impact on playback. I have a Johnny Cash reissue from the late 1990s or early 2000s on “virgin vinyl,” that was house in a clear PVC sleeve and nothing else, and it not only suffered from off gassing, but the record has noise throughout. After ultrasonic cleaning, no improvement. That bummed me out because the record was a gift.

I collect as well. Since 1974. I've seen this here and there. But I understand the plastic against the vinyl. But also I believe it also has in my opinion matter the temperature in the room albums are being stored in. My vinyl is all in a A/C comfortable room with a ceiling fans that stays on 24/7.

Some sealed records are worth having just for the fact that they're sealed and thus "add to" a collection of a favorite artist - preserving what the record was like new in a store. I have a few that are never intended to be played. But I agree - most sealed or bagged records should be opened and the vinyl properly cleaned (and rinsed free of any / all agents). Those HDPE sleeves should last many decades without causing any issues. The art framing world has dealt with outgassing issues for many decades. Some of the principles apply well to records. There was a purported run of MOFI sleeves that had problems some time ago, but most I've seen / have do not have fogging issues. I've kept records in VRP polyethylene audio sleeves I bought in the 70's and they are still clean and clear... pushing 50 years now!

This is one of the sickest and most impressive box sets I've yet seen. I love music collections like this and it's pretty amazing. If I had the cash I would probably buy it as an investment to resell later. Although, I would only sell it if I felt I needed to. Otherwise, I'd let it sit as a wonderful showroom collection.

Some of my best days were spent digging through box after box my friend acquired from a storage locker on Long Island. We did well on eBay and Discogs, but I bought a ton for myself, too. The Lone Star album is good! Opens with a cover of "She Said She Said." Produced by Roy Thomas Baker. The one guitarist ended up in UFO.

the name for that used to be called "de gassing" its from chemicals in the manufacture of the sleeves.

One of my takeaways: the assault on the english language continues...whoa.

Poly vinyl chloride (pvc) is a serious problem. Luckily however - and this is important - almost no US or UK inner sleeves of the 50's through 80's ever used pvc. Usually PVC was a record outer cover used by libraries and some collectors (often in the UK I note). Island, Decca, Polydor, London, et al always used polypropylene liners for their sleeves, which is very stable and poses no problems to vinyl by itself. In the mid 1970's polyethylene (incorrectly referred to as rice or tracing paper) became the norm. This too is very stable and poses no problems with vinyl by itself. In 50 years of collecting and thousands of records using these poly lined inners, I've never had a problem with hazing or fogging, with the exceptions noted below. Now for the big caveat -- what causes fogging to vinyl using those sleeves? We did testing on this years ago. A foreign or external chemical catalyst that got between the poly and vinyl. Every case with sticking liners and/or fogging to the vinyl was due to a) the use of a cleaner used on the record at some point in its prior life that was not thoroughly rinsed off, and/or b) an environmental factor where the records were kept or stored over time, i.e. aerosol carbon and oil residues from home heating systems or stove top cooking, smoking, use of wood fireplaces etc. Generally you'll find that records using both types of poly lined sleeves - as long as they were kept clean and stored in a relatively dry and temperature stable evironment - will be absolutely free of fogging. Getting back to record cleaners; back in the 60's and 70's a popular method of cleaning records was a record cleaning cloth available at many audio stores. A common ingredient to these was an alkali (mild soap or detergent basically) embedded with a base. The clothes had a very slightly oily or damp feel to them. Users typically wiped or polished the record clean, then, without a thorough rinsing, popped the record back in its sleeve. A touch of humidity plus some air particulate - mixed with a little time - and all the ingredients were in place to oxidize and cause outgassing of both the vinyl itself and the poly. Incidentally, the same outgassing and chemical oxidation concerns exist with the conservation of other materials; from papers to textiles to paints and so on.

That was a lot of very nice records at the start the. It went down hill for awhile but picked back up toward the end. Amazing what you keep finding

I’m not saying records have never been sold sealed in the UK but I don’t ever remember them being that way. Of course Wish You Were Here would no doubt have been when I bought it back then and if so I didn’t leave the black wrapping on, I’d have ripped it off and thrown it away. The few new ones I’ve bought recently have been sealed but that gets ripped off and thrown away.

OMG, I had no idea that cassette was back there! I’ve only had my set a few months but completely missed it.

I'll keep the original cover in plastic when possible. Removing the record, adding inner sleeve, then into the paper. Finally, I put the record behind the cover inside an outer sleeve. Nice and loose but protected.

The Chuck Berry in box 1 is a goodun if it's a black label.

I have always paper sleeved all of my records, purely because I hate the plastic sleeves. Now I am even more glad I did. I never keep things sealed though, I buy them to play/use them.

Worth pulling that Sunshine Company lp. Sunshine pop so pretty pedestrian at times but the track Four In The Mornin' is killer with fuzz guitar and Free Design sound to it (it's on YT). It's a cheapie as well. Love that Astrid Gilberto on CTI....beautiful record. Cheers Nige
