😂 I always get a kick out of people minding your own business, not their own. Some of those comments were well thought out and intelligent, but the ridiculous ones are truly ridiculous. I’ve been a collector for over 30 years, and like you, I also sell records and have been for over 20 years, but buy more. Way more. I’ve been a buyer / seller on Discogs for like 13 or 14 years. There’s of course no way we could’ve seen this resurgence coming, and when I think of certain records I sold say 15 years ago vs what people are willing to pay now, there’s a part of me that thinks, f*ck! 😂 Whatcha gonna do…. Can’t live regretting what didn’t happen but rather remembering the good things that actually did. Thanks, Steve. Great vid, man.

Today, a lot of UK record shops do sell sealed records, because that's how the pressing plants ship them , but in the '70's and '80's the vast majority didn't, and nor did they have massive stocks in-store either. If you went to some, yes they were shrink wrapped and stuffed into nasty metal racking that bent them out of shape, but only if they were shrink wrapped by the shop themselves, and there weren't many with a machine to do that. The big chains like HMV and Virgin did that and then only in their big city centre stores, where the rents per square foot made it important to eliminate stock rooms and dead/wasted square footage. In most cases (at least in small towns and local independents) you picked the empty sleeve from the rack, handed it to the shop assistant who would disappear into a large bank of shelving, returning either with the record in it's inner sleeve, or another copy (not shrink-wrapped), and then put the "display" sleeve back into the rack (unless it was the last copy in which case it would be the aforementioned record and inner sleeve). If they didn't have a copy in stock, you'd order it from their enormous catalogue (about the size of the London telephone book) which every record shop had, and if it hadn't been deleted, a copy would be delivered to the shop in 3-4 days as part of their next stock delivery. That of course was when we had huge record pressing plants in the UK. Now everything seems to come from Eastern Europe where the old Soviet era kit is just about still working. The EMI factory in Hayes is now just a big estate of luxury apartments. Sold off to Time-Warner who didn't want it and just wanted the Music catalogue royalties. Landlords for retail today are now nasty greedy corporations and the shops don't have the luxury of a separate stock room/area. The space is now used to flog Games and DVD's. They didn't exist back in the '80's and you usually went to a different shop to buy a VHS tape. You never bought a film in a record store, it was usually a trip to a specialist video retailer. Most people preferred to rent a video from Blockbuster. Today, my local HMV shop has a huge selection of modern pressings to buy and every one is shrink wrapped and kept in the rack for customers to browse. I prefer the old system, as it always meant you got a fresh copy, not some dog-eared one. Plus vinyl takes up so much space in the shop that their selection of CD's is disappointing by comparison, and not as comprehensive as the vinyl. The reverse is true of CD's. I prefer to buy a shrink wrapped CD and avoid shops where the CD's are stored out of the Jewel Case. The CD is especially prone to damage if it's not stored in a Jewel Case. Cardboard sleeves may be eco-friendly but CD's weren't intended to be stored that way. Most of the damage occurs from having to grip the playing side, and the Jewel Case design was carefully thought through to prevent the playing side being touched at all.
Thank you for this great information! It makes total sense that current pressing would be sealed. Back in the earlier eras I can see them not being sealed. ✌🏽
I have sealed records and open records. I listen, collect, and enjoy them all in their own way. Rarely do I sell or ever plan to sell. To each their own. Cheers
Hi David. I’ve accumulated a rather large amount of sealed records over the last couple of years. I got behind an opening them mainly because they were purchased in large collections. Hi steve , you clearly love your records. There's nothing wrong with having multiple copies of your favourite lps , i have multiple copies of Genesis and Yes, and elton john RSD issues on vinyl and still sealed. My passion is records been collecting since 1981, and when i find an album, i really like i buy more than 1 copy as you know certain records aren't pressed for very long before they disappear for good like RSD exclusives and coloured deluxe editions , its a way of future proofing your collection. Great show as always thank you.

I believe they too have a right to respectfully disagree with others. The key is to remain respectful. I admire your collecting style. I too do the same with certain records. Always great to chat with you. ✌🏽
Historically records were not sealed in the UK. Record companies and shops just didn't do it here. Someone might be able to clarify but I have a memory of some records in the 80s being sealed. I think that might have been solely a large chain store though obviously trying to prevent customers from damaging them in the racks. Possibly Our Price or Virgin, don't think it was HMV. That's my memory anyway. You see the occasional 80s lp in shrink but it's incredibly rare. We've had sealed records here since the early 00s now as they're mainly pressed in Europe. Hope that clarifies it for you Steve. Cheers Nige
