Hello world!
Here I will talk about being an indie game developer hobbyist while also being a full-time English teacher in Korea. I have been learning Unity with zero coding experience since January 2019. It has been so awesome! I hope I can inspire other's to try making a game even if they think they don't have the skills. (I started as an absolute beginner :D)
I released my first STEAM game SUPER NEAT CAT on December 17th 2020!
Now I'm working on YesterSol, a Hollow Knight inspired Metroidvania!

Thanks for leaving a comment on my first video neat games. Its pretty cool how far youve gone with your game. Any tips on how you battle roadblock and burnout?
No problem! For me I like making a checklist in Milanote, and then I work on small things during the week and big things on the weekends (since I have a full time job). It is satisfying checking things off, gotta enjoy the small victories :D
Awesome, Neat! And about "not wanting to edit" too much, it's not needed. Most importantly, it's fun to release videos. If it's not fun, it's harder to release them, so keep up and make the videos you want to make. There is always an audience that will like what you are doing. And the festival looks awesome! One day, I'm going to try to go to a game festival and look around . The gameplay looks really smooth!
Thanks and true true! It was cool for sure~ :D
Can you make the stick bounce when you use it for jumping vertical
I considered it, but trying to keep it simple so there are less bugs haha. I quit my first big project cuz their were so many bugs that I could never fix.
I really like taking slow and not to impress anyone but just talk heart to heart. Good job with the game. And I wish you good luck
Thanks for watching :D I'm bad at reading from a script (I sound like a robot hah) so I just used bullet points.
Yo, I enjoyed quite a bit this more relaxed vlog style devlog 👍 Very cool to see you got to showcase the game irl!
Thanks! It is easier not making a script and going off bullet points for me. I'm so bad at reading from a script and have to do a lot of takes haha :D
13:10 that was pure GOLD 😅
Ohhhh~ Ahhhh~ lol :D
@NeatGames & your game is 💎
버닝비버에 가서 직접 플레이 했어요. 정말 생각보다 너무 재미있어서 놀랐어요 ㅋㅋ
제 게임을 플레이해 주셔서 감사합니다! :D
The booth looks really nice! Well done!
Thanks :D Glad we added the little extra stuff
That place does look... neat! ^^
It was pretty cool! :D
Great work so far!! Very exciting!! Not sure if you have plans for music, but I am a composer working mostly in short films and video games. I would love to collaborate with you on this project if you are interested. Best of luck, and I look forward to seeing more!
Thanks for watching! I'm still considering how to do the music :D You can show me your samples on discord if you like ~
That sounds great! Keep updating us!!
Thanks! Will do! :D
Hey thanks for sharing your experience at this festival! Will you share if you thought it was a good roi from a wishlists perspective? Yestersol looks so polished, huge congrats on all your hard work.
Thanks for watching! I heard wishlists are never good at in-person festivals (online festivals are much better). However, last I checked I got over 120 wishlists from the festival. More than double what other teams got hehe.
Sounds like you had a good time at the festival and it was an opportunity for your game to get a broader audience and also more feedback. Very cool. Something I noticed recently, because your game has been on my Steam wishlist for quite a while now: There is a new law in Germany (where I live), which requires games to have an age rating. So right now Yestersol is grey on my wishlist with the message "This item is not available in your region.". I think I saw an easy fix for this somewhere, I can google it and send it to you via Discord if you want to, so that the game doesn't appear as banned anymore. I think you can just set it to "All ages" or something and it should be fine, but I might have to double check that.
Congrats on getting in the festival, looks like you got a lot of valuable feedback from it! As for localization, I can highly recommend the "I2 Localization" Unity plugin. You can hook it up to a Google Sheet and import/export automatically. If you have your own dialogue system, it can simply get the strings of the current language to display with a simple one-liner. I shipped two games with it already, working on the 3rd, so it's a really robust solution. But hey, if the current one works for you, all good! Keep up the good work! Looking forward to the release
Love the beaver mascot, and I'm glad the festival went well and I'm super happy to see the game was popular. Totally deserved it ^u^
Thanks Marxy! Yeah he was super cute/cool and I though he kinda looks like me haha :D
When you change clothes, do you use the Animation Override Controller to replace all the animations? Then when you want to hold an item or use a hoe, do you also use another Animation Override Controller to replace the original animation? So the two What will happen if two Animation Override Controllers are replaced with the same original animation? Thank you!!
Oh hello! Man it's been so long since I worked on this I kinda of forget haha. The clothes were just 2 sets, boy and girl, and the original sprite was grey/white, and the colors were just added by code. (So i only animated 2 sets of white cloths) I don't recall using overrides, I remember the animation tree was quite crazy with lots of if statements. I think I just had 2 tool animations, swing vertical and swing horizontal, and the item sprite renderer just switched out the tool. I quit this project because it was becoming so buggy and over-scoped.
I don't like the walking/running animation
I'll try and improve it! It's hard since I don't do frame by frame. What don't you like?
The legs look a little goofy
Looking very cool! Wow the size of the map looks insane!
Thanks! it's only 30ish percent :D
Awesome!
Thanks Skeffles :D
Congrats! We are Waiting! 👌
I hope you can play it in late 2025 or 2026 hehe :D
The game looks great!!
Thanks! I'm glad people are liking the style :D
Looks cool
Thanks Dude~ I work on it hard when I can :D
Great trailer! Your game seems to have a lot of content and good polish. 🎉
Thanks! It's only 40% done :D
I cant wait for this game! Great trailer.
I hope you will enjoy it :D
Congratulations on the game development journey! YesterSol looks awesome!
Thanks a bunch! Slowly but surely :D
Awesome to see the game is on the road to completion !
Yup thanks! It'll be finished someday for sure :D
trailer looks really great bro.🎉
Thanks a bunch :D
Can't wait to play this!
Someday it will be done :D
Great Trailer!! 🎉
Thanks Tom :D I needed a new one for sure hehe
Environment feels so much alive, totally deserve ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks! That is great to hear :D
Awesome video! The game is looking super awesome and I really love the art style of your game. You have also added some really kool features to the game and my favourite one being when the player becomes a seed. Also the spear throw and call back is super awesome as well. That will be really fun to play with. Just wishlisted the game and hope to see your game in the next game fest or indie game show fest. Looking forward to your next devlog. Keep it up! :)
Thanks a ton! I hope I'm in one someday too :D
I love your art style and how fluid your mechanics work!! Instant subscribe. I’ll be watching your career with great interest🔥
Hey~ thanks a bunch for watching :D Love your NMS content!
All the world building work is so thoughtful. I'll be following the progress!
Thanks a bunch for watching :D
Throwing the spear and using it as a platform seems fun!
Thanks! It is pretty fun to explore with :D
Your game looks great, love the visuals, I really like the spear weapon-platform hybrid. Good thing there were no brain eating zombies on your train haha.
Thanks! Haha yeah, phew no zombies :D
Absolutely love seeing your progress and congrats on all your hard work!
Thanks! And thanks for watching :D I'll keep at it~
Very cool. Thanks for sharing your experiences as well. Good luck with your game. Looks great so far!
Thanks a bunch! I'll keep at it :D
So excited for this game it looks incredible. My one concern is that theb bosses have slightly too much down time, for example that purple moth boss took 5 hits on its down time/stagger. I am sure this plays better than it seems now, but other than that, good luck i hope you continue this journey!
Thanks for watching! I will keep tweaking the bosses for sure :D
is the channel name a play on NEET or is that coincidental lol
Coincidental hehe, I was called "Neat Nick" as a kid :D
Brilliant to see more of yestersol and see your trip to busan. It's really cool that you're able to direct your game based off what you experienced.
Thanks Skeffles! I'm gonna try and put YesterSol in the Seoul Indie Game festival (but it is pretty competitive heh)
First thing i noticed is that the game's visuals look really nice!
Hey thanks a bunch! Some people don't like the look of my game, but I'm glad that some people do :D
so nice!! congratulations on all of your hard work
Thanks~ and thanks for watching :D I'll keep at it!
this actually pretty polished
That's good to hear! Been working on it for almost 2 years now :D
The seed looks good, but in my opinion if you give it a more unique look it could give the game more charm
I will play around with some designs, thanks for watching :D
Incredible how much you have progressed with your game so far! It's really inspirational 😄
Thanks! I will finish it for sure :D
Neat gaaaaaames
That's meeeee :D
New ability idea: spear lamp. There are dark areas were the player can only see with that ability. Its different from other metroidvania lamp abilities because it attached to the spear, and the player can throw away it. And maybe it can power up some kind of machines. I think it could make great puzzles.
Ohhhh that is a really cool idea! I will play around with it for sure~ thanks :D
Nice! I really enjoyed this style of devlog. I really like your talks about Yestersol because it's apparent you've put a lot of thought into it. Especially the worldbuilding (that map is huge!) Your adventures in the Busan Indie Game Festival also got me thinking of my own local area. I live in Kyoto and have thought going to an indie game festival would be a cool experience and maybe a good way to network with others. After watching your video, I did a quick Google search and found out the largest indie game festival is actually in Kyoto! Unfortunately, it's already passed but I know what I'll be doing next year! Anyway, great work!
Thanks! And yeah, check it out for sure! I will go to another one in Seoul in November :D
