Cumbrian Hay 2024. Baling hay the classic Ford way! A pair of 4600s, 4610, 7610 & a Nash baler.
Haymaking time finally arrived in Cumbria after almost a week of rain-free days so it was out into the fields to watch some classic blue Fords gathering the hay crop under cloudless blue skies!
On the Claas Liner 470S rake was the farms Ford 7610 series II gently gathering up the crop ahead of the conventional baler outfit. Powering the International 440 baler was one of two Ford 4600s the farm owns and this combination of tractor and baler would have been a very common sight back in the 1970s/ early 80s.
The 40-plus year old International 440 (Nash as they are commonly known as) was going really well especially considering it was a very bulky hay crop. Local Agricultural dealer Rickerby L...

    Good evening David and what a wonderful video, right from the era I remember and enjoyed the most. Also with all those Fords, it reminded me of when I was still at my apprenticeship as a Plant Engineer and the firm I worked for were from farming stock and had kept and farmed about 150 acres, which meant I still got to play at farming at the same time. At that time it was a Fordson Super Major, Ford 3000, Ford 6700 and an International 475 they had and I just loved those Fords. It looked like it was a great day for hay making and also looked a pretty heavy crop, with the Ford 4600 and the International 440 baler just chomping there way through pretty quick. I can see the bale accumulator was doing its own thing at times, which was pretty standard as they got a bit older. Not so common to see that amount of small square bales being made today, but if they have equine customers then they will go fast and for good money. Although this era of making hay was very hard work, especially before the onset of the flat 8 grab, I have to say, I really loved old haymaking and can remember making stacks out in the field before collection and everything was hand balled on to the trailers, then off and built into the hay barns all by hand (and gallons of sweat). The youngsters don't know there living today! I am sure the kind offer of an ice lolly was very welcome, but I know it was really a bribe to make the video look good. 🤣🍦🍦Thanks David. Cheers, Fraser.

      @@frasermathers2287 And a very good evening to you Fraser and I’m pleased you enjoyed the video reminiscent of an era I think most of us from a certain age fondly remember. Now that sounds like it was the start of a very interesting career but the bonus was getting to work with what sounds like a great fleet of tractors. The 4600 and 440 were indeed going very well and as you say it was a very thick crop to deal with. Yes flat 8 sledges can be temperamental but are a godsend when it comes to stacking up the bales ready to be loaded onto the trailers. Like you in my teens (many moons ago) when I helped out at my uncles farm it was always done by hand, stacks of bales scattered around the field and me and my little brother stood on the trailer stacking neatly and tight together as the bales were thrown up to us and woe betide if one fell off on the way to the barn! Yes gallons of sweat but also gallons of homemade lemonade to help rehydrate us! However no gallons of sunscreen back then, just sunburned bodies! Tough and tiring work but we always enjoyed those long summers! Oh I’m easily bribed when it comes to food Fraser, as well as being partial to ice lollies I’ll never turn down an offer to sit down for Sunday lunch especially if there’s homemade trifle for pudding! Good morning David from a sunny Aberdeenshire. Now this really brought a smile to my face (as do all of your videos), but the main outstanding feature for me was the condition of the equipment and the fact that all its operations are carried out in house, which in today's world is rare unless you have a large acreage. Its clear that this farmer not only have great pride in looking after his kit and how he farms, but really knows how to get value for money out of his investments. Both the MF 6465 and the JF mower really were like new, and performed and sounded exactly as they should. Loved the shot of when they were coming down into the dip and you could really hear the tractor singing! Was great to see that the field was being cut properly with the 1st row in the end rigs (headlands) being left to the end. See so many younger ones just going straight round the field, but some day they will come a cropper when they pick up some fencing wire or post or hit that big rock just waiting for them, meanwhile they rest of the acres can't get cut until repairs are done. (Sunday rant over) Haha. Thanks David and hope your weekend has been good. Cheers, Fraser.

All the machinery on the farm is in impeccable condition from the newest tractor (now 10 years old) to the oldest implements and like you say he’s certainly got his moneys worth out of his initial investment. Yes they were performing as they should, both tractor and mower singing without any worrying mechanical issues whatsoever especially as you say coming down into the dip. I totally agree with you about the field and especially that last row being left to the end, an experienced operator here (knows his land like the back of his hand) but a lot of costly mistakes are often made just by not using a bit of common sense, being aware of the hidden obstacles and rushing the job and as you say downtime can not only be costly in time wasted but also in repair costs too and all can be easily avoided. The good old Fraser trailers bring back a memory of my uncle giving me hell for damaging an axle on one of the 4 we had, and no matter what I said, he would not believe me that I was not aware of any damage. It turns out, it was my cousin that caused the damage and he owned up, but as you can guess, I am still waiting for an apology, which considering he's 6' under, I will never get! I also have to agree with you, that I too have never seen a Marshall trailer in green before and it looks a little out of place. The MF 6490 when it was turning into the yard was a fantastic sound and brought a smile to my face, however the whistling from the JCB TM 320s would have done my head in, but then again it was doing well keeping up with the loads coming in. Despite the overcast day, the quality of your stills and video were as always top class, so much so, you would even think that you new what you were doing 😂. (Sorry for the cheek, but you know I will take any opportunity for a laugh) Thanks as always David. Cheers, Fraser.

      Fraser, a very good evening to you, hope you are well my friend and thank you once again for your short comment!😂 Ah yes indeed the Fendt 828/ Reco forager outfit certainly is an interesting piece of kit. I too have seen pictures though only in my stash of tractor & farm machinery brochures (according to the better half I have far too many!) but this is the only one I know that is working in my area. You’re correct in saying it’s output isn’t quite up there with a SP forager but given the right conditions it’s damn close and as you also mention it can easily be converted back to a regular tractor (which it often is) out of season so a lot more versatile in that respect. Ah yes the Fraser trailers (good name that), not so many about the area now but there used to literally be hundreds in use in the Cumbrian area. Ha that story about you, your uncle and your cousin made me laugh, your uncle never gave you that apology but you can still smile about it all these years later! Yes a green Marshall, never seen one before but I suppose it matched the Claas tractor but then again the usual red paintwork would have too. Oh doesn’t that MF 6490 sound magnificent, I could listen to that engine note all day and I’m with you on the JCB but that’s probably because it was playing hell with my tinnitus (caused by too many years playing loud rock n roll!), it was working really hard though but the Claas Arion rolling the pit certainly helped out with its workload! Ah thanks for that Fraser, I really enjoy filming the video footage and taking stills with my Nikon that although is a bit unwieldy with it’s big heavy zoom lens takes great photos which unfortunately I can’t use on the videos as the resolution is too large and kind of shows the video footage quality of my phone (good as it is) up a bit and don’t worry I can take a bit of flack as I’m very tough skinned! Thank you as always Fraser, weather here while sunny tonight has been pretty nasty but I’ve still got a few videos already shot and ready to edit to keep me going and hopefully the likes of yourself watching till the weather picks up (hopefully soon!) again. Take care my friend, cheers, David.

Forgot to mention it in my previous reply that you pointed out about the quality of shooting under an overcast sky. In fact I’ve actually taken some of my best photos with a cloudy sky but the sun lighting it up from behind the camera, it always seems to capture a more natural colour on the machines without glare and often seems sharper in quality. I’ve taken many thousands of shots in the past and I’m very proud of them especially when you’ve captured a moment in time that no matter how hard you try you’ll never get that exact same photo again. Good morning David and what a wonderful and absolutely lovely short video on what was one of my favourite things to do, ted hay. The good old Ford 4600 which was running well and had a dry non oily engine case, complete with the Krone tedder was doing a wonderful job and was right at home despite its 46 years, and even made me think that as an oldie myself, that I might still have some use in life 😂. Like you, it also reminded me of how sharp smaller two wheel drive tractors can turn in the headlands, making them excellent for tedding work. I remember I used to pick our DB 885 for tedding for that very same reason. I see that when they purchased this particular Ford 4600, that they specified the mid range air conditioning(all the windows open), but hadn't upgraded to the top range version(doors off too) 😂. Looking forward to the baling and thanks for the fine video David and hope you had a nice weekend off. Cheers, Fraser.

      Afternoon Fraser and apologies for the delay in my reply. As like you tedding is a lovely job to do and what better tractor would you want to carry out that task with than a 1970s classic like a Ford 4600 or as you mention your choice of a DB 885. Yes its a lovely clean example, running very well with just a hint of black smoke (typically Ford of the period) under throttle with still plenty of years left in her (hopefully like yourself and yours truly!) A great steering lock, very manoeuvrable and almost spinning round on itself, perfect for this kind of work and I absolutely love DB 885s though there sadly aren’t as many about now! Ah yes proper period air-conditioning, I remember it well, MF 148 with the flexi cab canvas rolled back, doors off etc. would have been just as easy to whip the whole cab off altogether! I think you’ll enjoy the baling video Fraser, hopefully it’ll take you back in time though I won’t include the footage of myself dripping in sweat after running around the field! • @frasermathers2287
    @frasermathers2287 16 дней назад

    Evening David, and thanks once again for a very relaxing and entering video which was so pleasing to watch. First thing that stands out was the shear quality of the equipment in terms of being looked after, and the way it was being operated with nothing being hashed especially the older 390s. As for the NH T7.245 blue power edition with a McHale Fusion 3 Plus integrated baler/wrapper, well what a combination of kit, and just love the NHs in that colour. These McHale integrated balers are just amazing pieces of kit and such a time saver and produce some very well constructed and wrapped bales. These little Merlos look pretty dinky, but they sure can do their job to the Max. Had a shot of an older one built to construction spec about 20 years ago, and loved it, which considering I love JCB telehandlers, I was pretty surprised by its abilities. Regarding your question "does a tractor of this size do the job any better", I think we could line up twenty farmers and twenty operators and get 40 different answers to that question, however in one of my previous lives, I was brought in to look at vehicle engineering/operation for a national waste management company, and their fleet manager was convinced that operating commercial 32 tonner hooklifts, with small engines and output was the way to save money, and I could not convince him he was wrong. So to solve the issue, I arranged for the hire of an identical vehicle with a 25% increase in power and collated a whole lot of data, that clearly proved that bigger was far better in terms of fuel usage, maintenance required, tyre wear and overall operating costs, to the extent that the company changed its policy and only bought the larger models from that point on. The savings even after the extra capital cost was of about 12% per annum, which was a considerable improvement for vehicles doing about 100K miles per annum. So applying the same to tractors may well apply, but then again, you do have to take into account some very tight fisted farmers 😂. I also have to comment of that stack of bales and just say, that not only does care go into the equipment used, but when you see bales stacked in that fashion, it makes me feel proud for that farmer who takes care of everything on the farm. Thanks David for another high quality video. Cheers, Fraser. P.S., sorry for the long comment.

    • @davidwinthrop7077

      Morning Fraser and as always great to hear from you. Thanks once again, I’m pleased you enjoyed watching as you say a very relaxing and gently paced venture into the Cumbrian fields. Have to agree the quality of the machinery is second to none, so well looked after and especially as in this case treated with a bit of respect. Oh it’s a lovely combination the NH/McHale setup, a fascinating machine that saves having to have another tractor chasing around the field with the wrapper. Great little machine the Merlo, compact which is handy on a stock farm with older buildings but very versatile too. Reminds me of the cabless Massey 135 & MF 40 trip loader I used to use at my uncle’s farm as it’s great for getting under low doorways but that’s where the similarities end as the merlo is much more sophisticated. That’s very interesting about your comparison and how the bigger more powerful engine was actually more economical to operate at the end of the day, I suppose it’s less stressed and overworked so is using less fuel and makes more sense but then again I see some farmers using a 200hp tractor to power a 2-rotor rake (80hp MF 390 here), complain about the cost of fuel and think why? As you point out how proud you feel for the farmer about how well those bales are stacked, this family who have farmed here for many generations have every right to feel proud. Not only is the machinery immaculate, the yard is spotless, hedges neatly trimmed and their livestock in excellent health, a model farm is how you could describe it and how they run it is a credit to them. Thank you as always my friend, I’m really grateful for your comments and appreciation on my videos. It’s my last day of the week following my five day, 12-hour shifts so I’m ready for my weekend rest. Weather not so good so I doubt I’ll be out in the fields but I did get out several times last weekend so will be busy editing my video clips together for hopefully you to enjoy over the coming weeks. Was great to see a Massey Ferguson takeover on both farms and must have been a sight to behold, with the two tractors operating the butterfly combinations sure makes a large investment, but a guaranteed way to get crop down fast. Not sure I could think fast enough to operate them, so I will take the MF 6475 Dynashift with the single mower (and stiff neck that comes with it) as I am sure I can keep that moving. As for the MF 6120 turbo, well I totally agree it sounds just wonderful and looks right at home with its large flotation tyres on, and I am even sure it could run over you, and you would hardly feel it, although I am not offering my services. Yeh the MF 6475 and Claas would be much more me too, manageable especially in a smaller fields which this one was operating in. Oh yes the MF had a great sound, can’t beat a good turbo engine note and yes again I stayed out the road of those wide tyres as I think even as low flotation as they are if I’d got in the way and got run over I don’t think you’d be watching any more David Winthrop videos!!!
