  • Mowing for first cut silage in late June on a family owned and run stock farm that keeps all its operations including cultivation, silage and cereal harvesting in-house with its immaculately maintained fleet of tractors and machinery.
Looking as good as the day it left the dealership forecourt the one owner 20-year-old MF 6465 Dynashift in pristine condition mows the end riggs with an JF Westmac CMT 245 MkII Multi- Crimper 2.4mtr (8ft’6” in old money) trailed mower/conditioner that was purchased brand new in 1993 and has mowed the farms 100-acre silage crop every year for the past 31 seasons.
With plenty of power from the Masseys 6-cylinder engine, the heavy and still a little bit damp crop was easily dropped down by the JF mower with a really tight lock on the drawbar with no holdup on the turns to slow the outfit down.
Judging by the impeccable condition of both machines (and the farms JF trailed forager which will follow in an upcoming video) it shows it really pays to look after your machinery.
Filmed in Cumbria 22nd June 2024.

Good morning David from a sunny Aberdeenshire. Now this really brought a smile to my face (as do all of your videos), but the main outstanding feature for me was the condition of the equipment and the fact that all its operations are carried out in house, which in today's world is rare unless you have a large acreage. Its clear that this farmer not only have great pride in looking after his kit and how he farms, but really knows how to get value for money out of his investments. Both the MF 6465 and the JF mower really were like new, and performed and sounded exactly as they should. Loved the shot of when they were coming down into the dip and you could really hear the tractor singing! Was great to see that the field was being cut properly with the 1st row in the end rigs (headlands) being left to the end. See so many younger ones just going straight round the field, but some day they will come a cropper when they pick up some fencing wire or post or hit that big rock just waiting for them, meanwhile they rest of the acres can't get cut until repairs are done. (Sunday rant over) Haha. Thanks David and hope your weekend has been good. Cheers, Fraser.

And a good morning to you Fraser (though it’s just gone into the afternoon as I type this) from a sunny Cumbria too. Ah yes a very well looked after fleet of kit indeed and yes every single operation carried out by the family themselves. All the machinery on the farm is in impeccable condition from the newest tractor (now 10 years old) to the oldest implements and like you say he’s certainly got his moneys worth out of his initial investment. Yes they were performing as they should, both tractor and mower singing without any worrying mechanical issues whatsoever especially as you say coming down into the dip. I totally agree with you about the field and especially that last row being left to the end, an experienced operator here (knows his land like the back of his hand) but a lot of costly mistakes are often made just by not using a bit of common sense, being aware of the hidden obstacles and rushing the job and as you say downtime can not only be costly in time wasted but also in repair costs too and all can be easily avoided. Yes my weekends been good so far, had to do a bit of maintenance overtime at work yesterday morning but had an hour out in the fields after work so a peaceful rest day today while the better half is at work! Enjoy the sun and the rest of the weekend Fraser, cheers David.
