  • Three Massey Ferguson mowing outfits on two farms, all filmed on the same morning and within a stone-throw of each other.
The first two, an MF 8S.305 and a MF 7724S both belonged to a large dairy farm and were both knocking down the grass for 2nd cut silage with massive Krone Easy-cut triple mowers.
A few fields away at a stock farm were a lovely 20-year old first generation MF 6475 Dynashift mowing for first cut big bale silage with a Claas Disco 320 mounted disc mower/conditioner. Also in the field was the farms MF 6120 turbo (lovely sounding tractor) travelling on wide terratyres kicking out the dropped grass with a Malone Tedd-air 570 tedder manufactured in Co.Mayo on the west coast of Ireland (rare in this area but i imagine very popular in its home country).
A very changeable day weather wise with the possibility of rain not far away but the risk paid off and the next day was nice and sunny (even though as usual it rained in the afternoon) and I was lucky to be able to film the baling and carting action the next day.
Filmed in Cumbria 2nd June 2024.

Lovely set of Massey's david, that MF 8S.305 a massive beast, what a size, talking of size that MF 6120 with those very large rear wheels looks odd, another great video, cheers Steve . 👍

Thanks Steve. Yes the Massey 8S was absolutely huge, big farm though they even own their own Krone Big X SP! Yes it does look different, quite a few farmers operate on terra tyres round here but they tend to keep them permanently on the tractor because they’re so heavy to swap about! Cheers, David.

Hello David, and my apologies for my late entry to the party. (Not sure how I missed your upload, but I am blaming my age 😀). Was great to see a Massey Ferguson takeover on both farms and must have been a sight to behold, with the two tractors operating the butterfly combinations sure makes a large investment, but a guaranteed way to get crop down fast. Not sure I could think fast enough to operate them, so I will take the MF 6475 Dynashift with the single mower (and stiff neck that comes with it) as I am sure I can keep that moving. As for the MF 6120 turbo, well I totally agree it sounds just wonderful and looks right at home with its large flotation tyres on, and I am even sure it could run over you, and you would hardly feel it, although I am not offering my services. Glad they got lucky with the weather, and must say over the years I always found dealing with the weather very stressful at hay or silage time. Thanks for the extra video David. Cheers, Fraser.

Good evening Fraser and no need whatsoever to apologise, as they say better late than never! I’m in the same boat by blaming my age but it’s always a good excuse and at times works to my advantage! Yes certainly an all red day and just shows how varied different outfits that basically do the same job can be! Those butterfly outfits were even more impressive in the flesh though I probably couldn’t or wouldn’t like to guess the hire purchase payments on them (and yes I kept a very safe distance away from them!) Yeh the MF 6475 and Claas would be much more me too, manageable especially in a smaller fields which this one was operating in. Oh yes the MF had a great sound, can’t beat a good turbo engine note and yes again I stayed out the road of those wide tyres as I think even as low flotation as they are if I’d got in the way and got run over I don’t think you’d be watching any more David Winthrop videos!!! It was a beautiful day that followed as has been today and I’ve made the most of it this afternoon by filming some traditional haymaking that I think you will enjoy! As always Fraser, thank you my friend and I look forward to hearing from you soon again. Cheers, David.

That 8s with the krone tripples looks huge! Are both sets of buttefly mowers owned by the same farm / contractor? Interesting to see the massive tires on the tedder tractor too, a brilliant morning that must have been by all standards!

It was Jacob, a very action packed hour or so! Yes it was huge and yes both butterfly mowers owned by the same farm (they also own a big Fendt and a Krone Big X forager!) Yes huge tyres on the 6120, they never take them off because they’re so heavy, they’ve got about 8-9 Masseys on the farm and come silage time it’s all hands on deck! Thanks again my friend for your always welcome comments and continued support. Cheers, David.
