  • My first outing into the Cumbrian silage fields in 2024 and just 5 minutes from home to watch a John Deere 6195R and Claas Liner 2900 rake rowing up the kicked out grass.
The farmers own machine and possibly a big tractor for a two-rotor rake but there were some steep fields so stability gwas a priority here, however a nice outfit making neat rows ahead of the foraging team (video to follow in my next posting)
A lovely day out, beautiful location, great vantage points, smell of fresh grass and clean air from the trees and a nice looking outfit, couldn’t be better! The only downside, my old legs were tired out from walking up all those hills (that grassy bank in the background at about 2:00 minutes in that I clambered up and down is steeper than it looks!) sometimes I forget I’m not as young as I used to be!
    Filmed in Cumbria, May 2024
Since filming this and the following few videos (which took place on the weekend of 18th/19th May), the weather up here in Cumbria has been shocking with rain almost everyday so I haven’t been able to get out as much as I would have liked too. Hopefully it’ll pick up in June but as I am away on holiday this next week I’ll probably miss out on all the frantic activities catching up in the fields but I’m sure they’ll be plenty to see when I get back!

Likes and taking the time to comment (preferably positive ones) are always welcomed and I will try to reply as soon as possible although if I’m at work or out filming there might be a delay. Cheers, David.

Hi David, and yet another change of colour this week, and I just love anything to do with silage or hay making as it always takes me back to being a kid. That JD 6195R and the Claas rake sure was just gliding along those lovely sloping fields, (looked a great part of the country), although not sure if the tractor had enough HP for the job! 😂. My only ever connection to a John Deere, was when I bought a JD4240. This was in one of my previous roles, during my time as Materials, Engineering & Logistics Manager on a missile test base in the Outer Hebrides, and the tractor was actually sent to St Kilda as a support/maintenance tractor. My first exposure to grass tedding or raking was with a Bamford Wuffler (yes showing my age) and we also had a horse drawn hay rake converted for the tractor, which was a Nuffield Universal. When we got our first PZ Haybob, well we thought we had hit the jackpot. Thanks as always, Cheers, Fraser.

Hi Fraser, good to hear from you this fine sunny evening (long may it last!!) Yes I do like to vary the colours if I can though I’ve come across quite a few green & yellows lately. I’m the same, so remember those long summers at my uncles farm when I a kid, even though it’s over 50 years ago I can still picture it like it was yesterday! The JD/ Claas was a nice combination (just about enough power though only just) and as you say Fraser very scenic. Now that sounds a very interesting job and set in a beautiful part of the world and a 4240 was a big machine in its day, around 130hp if my memory serves me well! I’m showing my age too because I also remember the Bamfords Wuffler as my uncle had one along with an acrobat finger wheel rake and a Bamfords BL58 baler (obviously liked the brand). Like you when he got a PZ Haybob and a Deutz Fahr KM22 drum mower he thought they were the bees knees! I can still picture them working behind his three tractor MF fleet, 135 (with the cab removed, remember those long hot summers!) 35X on the tedder and the big tractor, all 47hp of a MF 148 driving the baler. Oh if only I could go back in time and film that operation! Fraser, always a pleasure to hear from you, take care my friend! Cheers, David.

@@davidwinthrop7077 Oh yes those hot summers and thousands of small bales, plus having your lunch and tea in the field with all the help that used to show up every year. Those were the days lol. Thanks for the memories David. Cheers, Fraser.

Cheers Steve. Yes hopefully things will start moving this weekend and through the next month or so, it’s been bloody awful weather up in the north of the county! Hopefully I’ll catch some action this weekend before my weeks holiday! Cheers, David.

Perhaps overkill but still a nice setup nonetheless. Undulated ground there too.

Yes 100hp would easily have pulled the rake Jack but as we both know that’s not always the case now! Yes great land to film in, hardly a flat field in sight! Cheers, David
