  • Haytime in Cumbria has finally arrived after a good spell of dry weather so it was out into the fields watching a very tidy 46-year old classic bubble cabbed Ford 4600 kicking out the drying hay with a Krone KW 5.52/4x7 tedder. The 3-cylinder two-wheel-drive 4600 was literally turning on a sixpence at the end of the rows and straight into the next row without any hesitance at all. Watching it reminded me of haymaking of old, the kind I well remember from my early teen years where I was often roped in to help. I also managed to film the baling with more classic Fords later that afternoon, more on that to follow in a future video.
Filmed in Cumbria late June 2024.

Good morning David and what a wonderful and absolutely lovely short video on what was one of my favourite things to do, ted hay. The good old Ford 4600 which was running well and had a dry non oily engine case, complete with the Krone tedder was doing a wonderful job and was right at home despite its 46 years, and even made me think that as an oldie myself, that I might still have some use in life 😂. Like you, it also reminded me of how sharp smaller two wheel drive tractors can turn in the headlands, making them excellent for tedding work. I remember I used to pick our DB 885 for tedding for that very same reason. I see that when they purchased this particular Ford 4600, that they specified the mid range air conditioning(all the windows open), but hadn't upgraded to the top range version(doors off too) 😂. Looking forward to the baling and thanks for the fine video David and hope you had a nice weekend off. Cheers, Fraser.

Afternoon Fraser and apologies for the delay in my reply. As like you tedding is a lovely job to do and what better tractor would you want to carry out that task with than a 1970s classic like a Ford 4600 or as you mention your choice of a DB 885. Yes its a lovely clean example, running very well with just a hint of black smoke (typically Ford of the period) under throttle with still plenty of years left in her (hopefully like yourself and yours truly!) A great steering lock, very manoeuvrable and almost spinning round on itself, perfect for this kind of work and I absolutely love DB 885s though there sadly aren’t as many about now! Ah yes proper period air-conditioning, I remember it well, MF 148 with the flexi cab canvas rolled back, doors off etc. would have been just as easy to whip the whole cab off altogether! I think you’ll enjoy the baling video Fraser, hopefully it’ll take you back in time though I won’t include the footage of myself dripping in sweat after running around the field! Many thanks as always my friend, you enjoy the rest of the weekend too. Cheers, David.

@@davidwinthrop7077 Now you running around the field chasing it would be very worth while, and of course I am just thinking on your health and encouraging your exercise regime David. Catch you later. Cheers, Fraser.

It’s not a pretty sight Fraser but I do alright for my age! Mind you I definitely sleep on a night after a few hours tramping round the fields!

Great to see the ford 4600 working David, still looks good today i would say, great filming and editing, so colourfull and clear are modern phone pics now that they have overtaken camcorders in picture quality, BUT cannot compete on zoom and sound quality . One note you say kicking out the grass, we say Scalling the grass, but is local to our area, tedding another, thoughts, 🤔, cheers Steve . 🎥🚜

Many thanks Steve. Yes it’s a lovely old classic Ford looking really well for its age. Yes have to agree with you there, good colour, sharpness and sound up close but zoom out and not so clear. That’s the reason I always use my Nikon DSLR as it’s so sharp for photos but too faffy for video. Ha, I’ve heard of that saying before, before kicking out it used to be scattering up here! Cheers, David.

I take it you’re having the same weather we’re having in Cumbria David? About 4-5 days of sun last week (just enough for haymaking) and then back to the clouds and rain! I well remember those long hot summers of years ago when a good crop (even two) of hay was guaranteed!

Good video that has to be one of the best ford 4600 about we bought a 6600 with a q cab new in may 1979 she was some step up in comfort compared to the 5000 🙂

Thanks Paul. Yes it’s a really nice and original looking Ford 4600, very straight indeed. Farmer told me he had fitted a replacement engine from an industrial 3-cylinder Ford (hence the yellow cylinder head) but apart from that it’s all original. I bet that 6600 was something else when you got it? Light years ahead in comfort from the 5000. Cheers, David
