Following recent Storm Darragh, water levels have finally dropped, allowing Lyn to venture out for one last time this year, firing up the Kelly Kettle for a hot coffee on the riverbank, and enjoying some wonderful sport with the resident grayling, amongst the beautiful Welsh winter landscape.

@@Lukasz_Fishing_Ireland thank you. At least you have fantastic trout fishing! 👍
Lovely video Lyn, really enjoyed it. My local river, the Nith, is very similar, pretty clear, similar flow and gravel bottom. I've never really thought of fishing the spiders like that for grayling, but it's something I'll be trying this weekend. At the very least it'll give the shoulder a break from holding the nymph rod out!. Am I right from reading the comments below that your leader is around 18' all in?.
@@AyrshireFlyGuy thanks for the feedback, glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, always nice to have the spiders setup to enjoy some casting, and give the arm/shoulder a break! Yes, my complete leader is around 17-18ft 👍
I have to tip my hat to the pair of you! 'm seldom moved to add any comments to posts but this video was first class in production and content. It was totally absorbing and worthy of much more credit. To watch without constant narration is a massive plus for me. That was, in the modern parlance, a very mindful video. Thanks so much and a new subscriber here. More of those please . PS I hope you played the camera man to the net as sympathetically as those glorious fish, and safely returned him after 😊
@@DavidChalcraft thanks for your kind words David! Glad you enjoyed, it’s certainly a style to develop for future videos. To confirm, my camera man was not seriously hurt in the making of this video - I just didn’t speak to him for an hour or so after losing that grayling! 😂
Stunning film this. Do you mind me asking what you use to film it?
@@SpotsStripesFishing thank you! Believe it or not, 90% of this video is filmed using an iPhone SE, only the footage closer to the water is filmed using a GoPro 12 👍

I'm curious about the shin guards. What is the reason for them?

Cracking video. Coming back to the river after a stroke. What do I look for in a rod? I will fishing nymphs, dry and spiders including euro. Tight lines for 2025
@@neilmason158 thanks Neil, hope you’re on the mend. Ideally, you’d need a rod for each method, or at the very least two rods. Nymphing wise, I’d recommend a 10ft 3wt (the length for control and soft enough to protect light tippets). An ideal spider rod for me is 10ft 4 or 5wt and for dry fly, I personally use a 9ft 5wt but I know most use a 3-4wt. If you’re a competent caster, you ‘could’ get away with one rod for all, say a 10ft 3wt but it’s not ideal 👍
Loved that Lyn. Thank you. Wonderful looking stretch of river. Beautifully filmed and great to see a see someone doing a bit of wet fly fishing as well as euro. I notice you seemed to work downstream with your euro rig on a lot of occasions. Is this something you usually do when focussing on grayling? Do you always look to swing and raise the nymphs each run through before re-casting when doing this? Do you leave the flies to swing and “dangle” below you for long before recasting the wets? Cheers
@@PhilWilkins-lm2jv thanks Phil, glad you enjoyed the video. You raise an interesting point. I don’t think it was a conscious decision to nymph downstream through the pools - I guess it was mostly about available access (or just being lazy!). But you’ve certainly got me thinking! I do try to swing my nymphs downstream of myself each cast, as fish can follow your flies (the induced lift): Of course, you’re also dislodging food from walking along the riverbed (grayling seem to be less cautious than trout, and are definitely attracted by this). Same with the wets I guess, I do catch fish at the ‘fished out’ position (and the lift/hang), but from my experience, these tend to be the smaller fish (of course, you lose a lot of fish too, as you’re essentially pulling the fly out of their mouths). Just my thoughts.
@ Thanks so much for that Lyn. Really appreciate such a thorough response. I mentioned it as I think I remember Fred Bainbridge writing that he often worked downstream with nymphs for grayling.
Hi Lyn, Yes I enjoyed the new format. It would be fair to say I also have enjoyed your spoken videos also and learnt alot from both. I have a question -is there any reason to not use a more traditional nymphing style (my prefered method) as you do for fishing the spider set up, for nymphing also over Euro nymph style (which I have yet to have any success with)? many thanks Mark
@@Markfishing-1 Hi Mark, glad you enjoyed, and thanks for the feedback. To be honest, I was only fishing the gold head nymph on the spider rod as it had some weight to get my spiders down (I wouldn’t consider this as nymphing). You can of course fish nymphs upstream with a traditional fly line setup, but for me, modern (Eurostyle) tight-line techniques are more productive - you often have hookups at the end of the drift on the downstream swing (induced take).
A very enjoyable video
@@tonycave7426 thanks Tony! 👍
The beauty and calmness of these UK streams is striking. Unfortunately we don’t have much of this around here in the Netherlands. Which type of fly-line have you used here, if I may ask? Did you attach the French leader directly to the backing, or maybe to a specific euro nymphing fly-line? Stay strong 🙏🏻
Thanks for the feedback, indeed, we are very lucky with the rivers we have in the UK - you should visit! On this video, I'm using a setup where I've connected a 9m Hends French Leader to an old Rio Technical Euro Nymph line. I've since moved onto the 12m version which avoids any fly line being in my hand. Regards.
@ I’ll visit North England and Scotland probably next spring. We have no trout, but a lot of big pike over here! Thanks for the advice. Cortland seems to offer excellent lines for this purpose too. I’m selecting a euro nymphing equipment right now, and will for starters go for the basic set up you’re using. Thanks again 👍🏻
Just discovered your channel and really like your new approach which means I can watch all the action without the sound on to annoy anyone! Could you tell me what the wading is like there? I’d love to visit that stretch but am not a confident wader. Thanks.
