I love that old river, it breaks my heart to see it as a shadow of its former self. But there we are, it’s happening everywhere. I fear one day all that’ll be in the river will be brown trout. Hopefully some will decide to go to sea so the cycle will start again. It really is a unique, fabulous river. Nice video, Diolch yn fawr.
I fished that stretch of the Towy over 50 years ago when I lived in Rhosmaen nearby and my mother actually worked for Dr Phillips who lived at Llyshendy. The 'Baskets' pool was named after large wire cages filled with stones were planted on the side of the river to stop it eroding the soft land away. My favourite fly was always a silver March Brown and caught many a wild Towy brown trout with them. A fabulous river but the fishing was spoilt many years ago when Llyn Brianne was built north of Llandovery. Very few salmon are caught these days but sea trout or sewin as they are called locally are caught now and again !! Tudor Davies, London.
@@capturedonline Diolch Lyn, in fact I caught my very first salmon on the next bend in the river going towards Llandeilo, many many years ago mind you !! This is when the river was full of salmon and sewin. Good luck for the future of fishing the Towy. Tudor Davies.
Caught my first ever sewin and salmon on the towy at Llandeilo(the salmon under Llandeilo bridge..iwas 12 or 13 at the time and the sewin at cobners) loved fishing Llyshendy and stone pool, great video Lyn, keep up the good work! I used to look at the towy wishing i was there instead of been in a maths lesson in tregib😂
Inspiring! I live local to this area. As a still water fly fisherman your videos have inspired me to try river fishing. Can’t wait to get out there. Thank you, keep posting your lovely films.
It's not all about the catch is it Lyn. Half of fishing is being out in those stunning surroundings. What a treat. This is local to me. I plan on going to grab a permit for my boy to fish on Llandeilo waters today. We fished the river Irfon yesterday and had 20 browns. 4 of them being over a lb in weight and 2 other just under the 2lb mark. We stopped in a pub in llanwyrtyd wells for a well earned shandy and packet of crisps before heading home. Magical evening ✨️🎣 Keep posting ur videos they are very enjoyable. Thanks
My sentiments exactly. Your trip to the Irfon sounds wonderful! Great news that there's such a good head of trout there, but where are the grayling? Hope you enjoy the Towy too. Regards.
Ah, thanks Mark! Glad you're enjoying the videos - huge amount of work, but always worth it with such positive feedback. Yes, you'll love Berwyn - one of my favourite places to be!
As many others are saying, my father caught some of his largest fish on that river and so did my uncle, it's sad to see it be ruined fishing wise, the one and only fish I've had was a small brown on rapala when I was about 7, maybe half a pound in weight.
Glad you enjoyed the video Dillan. We all live in hope that the migratory fish numbers will improve. In the meantime, I continue to enjoy catching the beautiful wild brown trout from this majestic river 👍
Hi lyn, another great video! I'm curious to know what weight rod/line you are using on the Towy -4wt? Also have you made any nymphing videos - I would like to increase my knowledge of river nymph fishing techniques for the river.
Hi Mark. Thanks for the feedback! I’m actually using a Loomis NRX LP 5wt, but with a 4wt fly line. I catch a lot of the better trout while nymphing on the Towy, so it’s on the video ‘to do’ list for sure! Check out my other videos too, as I’m often switching to the nymph setup 👍
